2. Overall Goal
Kutamba Dance Project aims to bridge the gap between
the primary and secondary/high schools in dance thereby
creating continuity in dance from primary to
secondary/high school to college/university level.
At the same time this project will open avenues for the
unemployed youths who will be the trainers in dance in
schools. This will be a pilot project with Mutare District
funds permitting. Basing on the possibility of the project
we will move into Manicaland province before taking it to
be a national event.
8. Target group
For Kutamba dance group: School leavers of 1930 years of age
For Workshops at schools: Grade 7’ers, because
they are the first ones to get to secondary school.
If Kutamba dance keeps following them, the aim
for bridging the gap in dance education at
secondary school will be met.
9. Background info
•
There is a gap between primary and secondary schools in terms of dance. In other words there is no
continuity of dance lessons from primary into secondary schools, leaving the once exposed students
to starve their interest in dance to death.
The proposed project stands high chances of succeeding since we have the following strengths:
• Managers of this project are passionate in dance e.g. Elizabeth Muusha runs a monthly “Poetry
/Music Dance Session” at her work place every month that gives youths a platform to showcase their
talents in various art genres. Visit Facebook page at ngzmutare@yahoo.com and Nyasha Tigere runs
disco shows and stays within the community of Dangamvura Suburb where the majority of these
youths come from.
• Intended target group for this project are passionate youths from informal existing dance groups
formed within the communities of Mutare.
• Our selection is gender sensitive
• We would like to use the multi-sectorial approach where we will involve all stakeholders to do with
music and dance in Mutare.
• This project will lay the foundation of confidence with majority of the youths
• There are high job opportunities for the youths in this unemployment era in Zimbabwe.
• We will work closely with NASH (National Association of School Heads) in gaining their support
and weaning the project off to them as is with the Jikinya Project which NAPH (National
Association of Primary Heads) are running with Delta as main sponsor alongside other sponsors.
10. Background National Gallery in Mutare
Goals of the organisation
National Gallery is a parastatal organisation with the mandate to promote the development of fine
arts in Zimbabwe. This organisation aims at an educated society about its environment through
visual arts entry point.
Projects that the organisation carried/carries out
National Gallery in Mutare has several projects and activities that it is involved in trying to address
its goals, among them the following:
a) MANISA Exhibition (Manicaland Show of Arts Exhibition) involves visual artists from the
whole region of Manicaland since 1999 when the gallery was established. All artists are given a
platform to showcase their talents in various art specifications like drawing and
painting, installation, sculpting and many more. MANISA is done annually in the month of July
and is our main project.
b) “Shaurai” - (Music/Poetry Session) which is a platform that we started in April 2012 in trying
to integrate visual and performing arts as a way of bringing life to the gallery that has a
challenge of publicity at the moment. This is an ongoing project that we accord various
interested young upcoming artists to come and perform before an audience on different
societal issues.
c) Holds exhibitions at various platforms like the Agricultural Show Society, Chimanimani Arts
Festival, Manica Festival and many more.
d) Platform for dialogues and workshops related to arts.
