This document discusses competitive sports in schools in Malaysia. It examines the role of government policy in developing sports and addresses issues around ethnically-based Chinese and Tamil schools. The establishment of national sports academies is intended to develop elite athletes, but they tend to draw fewer applicants from Chinese and Tamil schools which have strong community support and sporting traditions of their own. While seeking to balance ethnic interests, government policy has inadvertently contributed to divisions in school sports along ethnic lines. Greater coordination is needed between national and local authorities to promote inter-ethnic sporting events and community engagement.
