Kiwi
s
There are five types of Kiwis
Great spotted kiwi Okarito kiwi or Rowi
Little spotted kiwi Northern and southern brown Kiwi
Random Kiwi Facts.
Okarito kiwis are
said to live up to
100 years.
Even when in captivity
Kiwis revert back to wild
instincts and are
aggressive.
The Kiwi is one of the oldest
remaining bird species and one
of many flightless birds from
New Zealand.
Only three white Kiwis have
been hatched in captivity.
The only species of Kiwi to be
hatched outside of New Zealand is
the Northern brown Kiwi.
I’m going to show you the
three or four most important part
of a Kiwi
And then show you two or three things describing those parts and why
they’re important.
The Kiwi
The Kiwi is a type of flightless bird.
That inhabits New Zealand.
New Zealand, before humans arrived
had very few large predators so the
Kiwi evolved into not needing wings to
escape.
Having no need for flying left
open slots for other parts of the
Kiwi to evolve.
Kiwis have marrow in their
bones instead of being
hollow.
They also lay large eggs
because they don’t have to
worry about flying with
them
Kiwi
Eggs
Kiwis have the largest egg to body size ratio 1:5.
The chicken and the Kiwi are the same size
yet the kiwi egg is much larger.
Why the Kiwi egg is so
BIG
The Kiwi lays a big egg so that
when it hatches the chick is
very developed and mature.
The Kiwi egg gets so big that
the mother has to eat three
times as much food and fast
the last few days because of
how compressed its organs
are.
The Kiwi chick hatches with its eyes fully
open and leaves the territory after 4-6 weeks.
Comparison of flightless bird eggs
Kiwis are endangered
Why?
Ever since
humans came to
New Zealand
they brought
predators.
And since Kiwis
can’t fly or defend
themselves good
enough they been
killed.
And due to deforestation Kiwi habitats have been
destroyed
But New Zealand has taken
notice and supplies huge
efforts to keep the Kiwi
population alive.
Goodbye
Watch Kiwi!
