Kiwis are flightless birds native to New Zealand. There are five types of kiwis: great spotted kiwi, Okarito kiwi, little spotted kiwi, and northern and southern brown kiwis. Kiwis have large eggs relative to their body size due to evolving without the need for flight. They lay eggs so developed chicks can hatch, and the eggs are so large that mothers must fast before laying. However, kiwis are now endangered due to introduced predators brought by humans and habitat loss from deforestation. New Zealand is taking conservation efforts to protect the kiwi population.
