2. CLP Team Ashley Kitt and Liz Phillips have worked together at Churubusco Middle School for five years as special education teachers. They service twenty-eight students with varying disabilities. Ashley and Liz currently do assessment measures with all of their students. The CLP is a great tool to organize and incorporate new assessments into their current testing. They feel using the CLP will be a great way to monitor their assessments more accurately and efficiently and will benefit their students greatly.
3. School Profile Churubusco Middle School is set in a rural community. The school has approximately 300 students between grades 6 through 8 and a special education population of about 30%. 29% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Go Eagles!
4. Class Profile Special Education Student Make-Up: Specific Learning Disability Autism Spectrum Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder Number of Students 6th – 6 students 7th – 8 students 8th – 14 students
6. Goals We would like to monitor our students’ progress more efficiently with better organization. We would like to incorporate more assessments to monitor more areas of literacy. We would like to create more accurate and informative IEPs with the new data results.
7. Current Assessments ISTEP Acuity Scholastic Reading Inventory Read 180: Fluency Screen – words per minute Curriculum Based Measure: Maze Passage – comprehension Curriculum Based Measure: Fluency – words per Curriculum Based Measure: Writing – correct writing sequences –
8. New Assessments Reading Strategy Use Scale MetacomprehensionStrategy Index Motivation for Reading Questionnaire Student Reading Inventory Content Area Reading Inventory Multidimensional Fluency Scale
9. Organization Each grade level will have its own binder of assessment data and samples. Each assessment will have its own spreadsheet containing all of the students’ data. A calendar will be placed in the front of the binder to indicate what assessment needs to be completed on what date.
10. Implementation Beginning and End of the Year Assessments These assessments will be spread out through the first week of school. Each assessment will be discussed with the students and how they can benefit their progress. Monthly Assessments One fluency, comprehension, and writing assessment will be given one time a month. Each assessment will be spread out through the month so students are not overwhelmed with testing. If there is more than one assessment per area (ex. fluency) the tests will be rotated and given every other month.
11. Final Thoughts Through the creation of our Classroom Literacy Profile we feel that we have a better way to track student progress and monitor growth. We are also excited about incorporating new assessments and plan on reviewing them at the beginning of the following school year and adding new assessments as needed.
Editor's Notes
Ashley Kitt and Liz Phillips have shared a classroom since the start at CMS. We feel that it is a great benefit to our students because we are both available to them at any time. We are also able to collaborate on lesson plans, IEPs, and assessments.
Ashley and Liz see all of these students on a daily basis. Most of the students are in a guided study hall class in the resource room. One or both of the teachers are in the room at that time to work with the students.
Three students passed the English / Language Arts portion of ISTEP and 25 did not pass.
We use the above assessments to measure the students’ literacy achievements. Students are given goals based on their current progress and monitored monthly, once a nine weeks, or once a year depending on the assessment. All goals are reported on the students IEP and progress monitoring reports are sent home every nine weeks.
We have chosen these new assessments to help us determine what our students need to succeed in middle school. All but one of them will be done at the beginning and end of the school year. Although it will seem overwhelming to the students they will be quick, short assessments to help us plan what they will need to gain knowledge and hopefully hit grade level standards. The Multidimensional Fluency Scale will give us more information than just how many words per minute the student can read and will give us specific information that we can pass on to the student to help them read aloud better and read more efficiently.
Currently, each of our students have multiple sheets for each assessment that they complete. It is difficult to compare student scores when they are spread through multiple sheets. Compiling student data scores will enable us to compare scores and also enter data into progress monitoring sheets more easily.
All assessments will be done during grade level guided study hall. Some of the assessments can be done as a class, while others are done independently. Those that need to be done separately can be done in the office area of our classroom. Nine week and yearly tests will be given as needed. Nine week assessments will be put into a rotation with the other assessments so students are not overwhelmed with testing. The year end test (ISTEP) is scheduled and will also be placed into the assessment rotation. If another assessment is to be done while ISTEP is taking place the test will be skipped and done the following month.
This was a great experience for the both of us. We feel that we have a better understanding of our current data by placing it in the CLP format. We are VERY excited to see what the new school year brings!!!
