You've heard of the new Zend framework, Expressive, and you've heard it's the new hotness. In this talk, I will introduce the concepts of Expressive, how to bootstrap a simple application with the framework using best practices, and how to integrate a third party tool like Doctrine ORM.
Abstraction, encapsulation, polymorphism, and interfaces: whether you've been programming in PHP for years or are just starting your journey, these terms can be overwhelming even on a good day. Variables, conditionals, those all make sense. But this whole object-oriented thing is way more complicated. Not only that, people that already understand it, act like it's so easy and they talk right over the simple questions and never explain the basic concepts in a way that actually makes sense. In this session, we'll take you through real-life examples of object-oriented terminology in a way that will make sense of all the mumbo jumbo and allow you to utilize object-oriented programming (OOP) immediately.
Large and heavy PHP frameworks are a thing of the past. Modern PHP developers now have a wealth of libraries and packages available to perform specific tasks, and microservices are fast becoming a preferred way to architect applications. But many don't know how to start, and get thrown in the deep end to flounder. This hands-on workshop will introduce what microservices are, and how to leverage middleware to create them. We will use the Zend Expressive microframework to leverage components of Zend Framework, and other libraries, to quickly create awesome things without requiring an entire framework. Resources for reference and continued learning will also be shared.
Bringing modern PHP development to IBM i (ZendCon 2016)James Titcumb
Zend Server for IBM i has done a great job at allowing enterprise PHP applications to run smoothly on the IBM i platform. But what about developing for the platform? Having recently been hired for a PHP project on IBM i, we wanted to ensure the project was using the best practices possible. This involved embarking on a whole new collaborative journey - uniting expert platform knowledge with bleeding-edge modern PHP development practices. We'll show you the process our team went through on the project to revolutionize the client's development process by introducing database abstraction, unit tests, functional tests, continuous integration, automated deployment, and more.

A deep-dive for beginners into Composer, the dependency manager for PHP. Learn how Composer helps you obtain the components your applications depend upon, installs them into your project, and controls their update to newer versions.
With PHP frameworks being more decoupled than ever, and with the help of a package and dependency manager, large and heavy PHP frameworks are becoming a thing of the past. Modern PHP developers now have a wealth of libraries available that specialize at specific tasks, and microservices are fast becoming a preferred way to architect applications. But many don't know how to start.
This talk will briefly introduce what microservices are, and how to use them. Then show how to build a foundation using the Zend Expressive microframework leveraging components of Zend Framework, and other libraries, to quickly create awesome things without requiring an entire framework. Resources for reference and continued learning will also be shared.
Adam Culp will give a basic intro to Zend Framework (ZF2 and ZF3) and how to use the foundational pieces. We will get a Zend Framework application up and running quickly using the Zend Framework Skeleton Application, and Zend Skeleton Module to add modules. Adam will also introduce some useful resources to help attendees continue learning on their own. The talk will give attendees enough information to get a jump start into using the framework.
Keep hearing about Plack and PSGI, and not really sure what they're for, and why they're popular? Maybe you're using Plack at work, and you're still copying-and-pasting `builder` lines in to your code without really knowing what's going on? What's the relationship between Plack, PSGI, and CGI? Plack from first principles works up from how CGI works, the evolution that PSGI represents, and how Plack provides a user-friendly layer on top of that.

Most applications written in Ruby are great, but also exists evil code applying WOP techniques. There are many workarounds in several programming languages, but in Ruby, when it happens, the proportion is bigger. It's very easy to write Ruby code with collateral damage.
You will see a collection of bad Ruby codes, with a description of how these codes affected negatively their applications and the solutions to fix and avoid them. Long classes, coupling, misapplication of OO, illegible code, tangled flows, naming issues and other things you can ever imagine are examples what you'll get.

In this presentation, we try to teach programmers how to avoid security flaws in the code.
The presentation is of the format of problem->solution->problem....
Given a piece of code the attendees have to identify the security bugs in it and the suggest a fix. Now, the attendees have to find security bugs in the fix. The exercise goes on and the attendees become secure code aware.

Climbing the Abstract Syntax Tree (Midwest PHP 2020)James Titcumb
The new Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) in PHP 7 means the way our PHP code is being executed has changed. Understanding this new fundamental compilation step is key to understanding how our code is being run.
To demonstrate, James will show how a basic compiler works and how introducing an AST simplifies this process. We’ll look into how these magical time-warp techniques* can also be used in your code to introspect, analyse and modify code in a way that was never possible before.
After seeing this talk, you’ll have a great insight as to the wonders of an AST, and how it can be applied to both compilers and userland code.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation.
