Khatijah Fernandes shares her experience leading with integrity. She outlines her leadership experience including roles at Target, Scanlan Theodore, and Kookai. She defines integrity as having strong moral principles and being whole and undivided. Integrity involves choosing courage over comfort and doing what is right rather than what is fun, fast, or easy. It means practicing your values rather than just professing them. Integrity in leadership shows through honesty, consistency, authenticity, and having the courage to speak difficult truths. Good company culture prioritizes values like honesty, trust, accountability, and teamwork over cash. Most employees say culture and mission are more important than salary for job satisfaction.
Are designers activists, or is design inherently an unethical profession?Richard Anderson
Indeed, design is most often practiced in a context which at best puts community interests at parity with client interests. Is design inherently an unethical profession?
Richard will review the evidence suggesting that designers are increasingly functioning as and are being encouraged to function as activists. He will then elaborate on the arguments that designers shouldn’t function as activists, explore what activism means, and describe the obstacles typically encountered by designers to functioning as activists.

Robert Glazer’s company, Acceleration Partners, has won numerous awards for their workplace culture and employee happiness, most recently #4 on Glassdoor’s Employees’ Choice Awards. Glazer attributes this success to the introduction of Company Core Values and a rigorous hiring process. Once employees are hired, care is taken to nurture staff both professionally and personally, while continuously evaluating their fit as the company grows. This 360⁰ approach has led employees to proclaim “I don’t know why I’d ever leave.” Glazer will share the evolution of these practices and his nontraditional approaches such as the Capacity/Experience Paradox, Mindful Transitions, and the Work-Life Paradigm.

1st Full time job at Target – Allocator
First experience in a Buying Office
Fast forward 20 years
Worked in big and small businesses
Worked in vertical and big box retailers
Worked my way up from Allocating to senior leadership
Been exposed to a multitude of leadership styles
Formed my own leadership style
Passionate about leadership –honour, and huge obligation. When you care for your team
Difficult to find good examples of this
As leaders we can shape an employees experience of work
”Leading with Integrity” is the strongest foundation to do this
Leading with Integrity….
buzz words
like “diversity”, “mindfulness”, or ‘transparency”
Term that not everyone really considers the meaning of
The dictionary definition of INTEGRITY is: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles”
A lot of company’s have Integrity as part of their values
ADIDAS: ”Integrity; we are open, honest, ethical and fair. People trust us to be adhere to our word”
AMERICAN EXPRESS: ”Integrity. We uphold the highest level of integrity in all of our actions”
COCA-COLA: “Integrity. Be Real”
NIKE: “Do the right thing”
STARBUCKS: “Acting with courage, challenging the status quo, and finding new ways to grow our company and each other’
Great organisational “value’ to profess,
All leaders need to live the values
I have become particularly passionate about “leading with integrity”
A lot so company values incongruent with behaviour of leaders
Examples:
Equal Opportunity employers v biases towards more male leaders If the leaders
This is the challenge
Everytime you witness an act that is incongruent with the documented values – how do you feel
Lose Faith, integrity breaks down
Brene Brown’s book “Braving the Wilderness” says “integrity is choosing courage over comfort. Its choosing what’s right over what’s fun, fast or easy; and its practicing your values not just professing them”
EXAMPLE
Reworking business reward payment system for meeting sales targets
Issue with the model – rewarding only individual performance at the expense of team performance
Reconsidering the reward system was really challenging – meeting the needs of the high performers, high contributors and business
Going through the process not FUN, FAST or EASY
Leading with Integrity mean standing out in the cold
There will be many times in your career where, as a leader your integrity will be challenged.
Times when you may be asked to action a business decision that doesn’t sit well with you,
How you deal with these situations show your integrity – how you deliver the message with empathy
So as a leader, how does integrity show up on your company culture
HONESTY –
able to have the hard conversations with your teams, but being able to do it with empathy.
Being able to tell them when an issue needs to be addressed. Giving honest feedback, and setting boundaries.
CONSISTENCY & RELIABILITY–
The more you live in your integrity, the more likely you are to be consistent
Consistency = reliability
Simon Sinek = Sense of belonging
AUTHENTICITY –
Be Yourself, Be Real.
No facade
COURAGE –
“Brene Brown – Speak Truth to Bullshit. Be Civil”.
Have the courage and the confidence to honour the value of your work, by speaking out,
Say ” NO” sometimes, when its best of the business or the best for your team.
Have the confidence to present your facts. State your case, and stand your ground if you have to. Its not always easy,
Not everyone has to agree, and you wont always agree with other people, but I think as leaders we need to be able to have the courage to allow people the space to disagee, or at least agree to disagree, so people do get the change to speak up for what the believe in
Having the courage to lead with integrity can be difficult, especially if you are in a male dominated industry, or even if you are in a male dominated leadership group.
A beautiful friend of mine sent me an Instagram post from the “Enlightened Consciousness” when I was going through a challenging time trying to live in my integrity:
To the women who are aggressive; keep being assertive
To the women who are bossy; keep on leading
To the women who are difficult; keep on telling the truth
To the women who are too much; keep on taking up space
To the women who are awkward; keep on asking hard questions
If you research the top values of good company culture, you will find a myriad of terms, in varying order of priority, however what you will usually find in common within the top 3 values is INTEGRITY
But what you also find is that leading with integrity also dovetails into a lot of the other values that make the top 10, such as:
Trust, Accountability, Passion, Leadership, Honesty
If you lead with integrity you can make real connection with you teams, and the greater the quality of your interpersonal connections, the more likely people will go the extra mile for you, because they know you would do the same
LinkedIn tarticles hat say “People don’t leave bad jobs, they leave bad bosses”
As leaders we play a big part in driving the company culture, because company culture is not just about what the company does for you, but how each of the people within the company treat each other to acheive common goals
This year GLASSDOOR conducted a survey of more than 5000 employees across US, UK, France & Germany
Survey Results as shown:
Culture v’s Salary
When a job seeker is looking to change employers 77% of them consider the company’s mission & culture over salary, when considering whether they will apply for a job
This is particularly important to millennials in the workforce
Job Satisfaction
When it comes to job satisfaction, 56% of adults aged 45+ say Culture matters more than Salary
However for Millenials this actually increases to 65-66% (depending on what region of the survey – US 65% UK 66%)
Staff Retention
When it comes to staff retention 2 out of 3 employees consider company culture when deciding whether to stay at a company
If we all just dig in and do the work, it will actually have not only a positive effect on the bottom line, because as we know the cost of hiring and training new staff can be up to 50% of their salary. But it will also have a positive effect on your team’s experience at work
People need to see the example for them to aspire to it
”Leaders East Last” – when people witness an act of kindness oxytocin in released (body reward system)
”Speak Truth to Bullshit” it wont always be easy, and I can’t even tell you that it will always go well (sometimes is hasn’t for me) – but “people can’t be what they can’t see”
Be the example – like most behavior, whether it be good or bad it can become contagious. You will impact people’s lives long past the short time you may get to work with them, and wouldn’t you rather be a legacy than just another passing manager
