      Croydon Tabernacle

5 Things to share
 I got five things I‘ll like to share with you today if applied
will make 2013 your best year ever.
 So let‘s get started.
 I have not come here to impress but to express. To draw from
within you the power you already possess. All you need to
achieve your goals lies within you. Educate in Latin means -
draw out. All the strategies that I will be sharing with you
today are within you. I am just here to draw them out.
 I don‘t just want positive evaluation and bizarre behaviour for
one week. I want you to be different three months from now.
At the end of the seminar I want you to share one thing you
plan on doing differently as a result of my presentation. That
will be our summary. After all, what you receive to make a
difference is more important than what I say. When you leave
here today you will have solutions to how to set and achieve
    your goals.
My Story
 Permit me to introduced myself properly
 I am a study in doggedness and an example of how anyone
can overcome adversity to succeed and thus become an
    inspiration to others.
Born in Islington, North London and taken to Nigeria when I
was two years old. I got an early jolt in life, when barely
eight, my father died. From then life became a struggle. At 10
years old I acquired the thirst to achieve from hawking cold
drinks and biscuits on the streets of Lagos to support my
mother who sold all her personal belongings to send me to
school. In Nigeria I had a varied and interesting career in the
entertainment industry from being a Promotions Manager to
    an Artiste Manager.
My Story
 To conquer poverty, which was my greatest fear when I was growing up,
I relocated to London in January 1996 thinking that London‘s roads are
littered with gold and silver. When I arrived I was shocked to discover
that a crook had stolen my birth certificate and used it to collect my
National Insurance card, credit card, and even opened a bank account. I
also discovered I was purportedly married except the crook forgot to
invite him. Everywhere I went, I was told somebody was bearing my
name. At a stage the authorities did not know who the real Dayo Olomu
was. With a strong desire to succeed backed with clarity, action, self belief
and my faith, I overcame these obstacles and that little boy who celebrated
his 10th birthday at a bus garage in Lagos whose identity was stolen
    when he came back to live in London is now a social entrepreneur;
business improvement consultant, success strategist, corporate trainer,
lifestyle business coach and a motivational speaker, a television
personality, an agent of positive change and most importantly a husband
    and a father.
My Story
 May I say that it is not by my power nor by my might but by His grace
because if God did not build the house those who labour, in Vain
―The greatest lesson I have learnt from my experience is that to be
successful you must have strong faith and a vision that drives you. You
must have a strong desire to succeed and back that desire with action. You
must have absolute believe in yourself, know that you have what it takes
    to be successful and when setbacks or tragedies occur, never, ever give up;
instead see them as opportunities for growth because success thrives on
adversity.‖ I think that is enough about me.
My story isn‘t unique – many others have realised their dreams just as I
have. But it does go to show that you can achieve whatever you want to if
you have a strong desire to succeed and backed that desire with action and
self belief. My story is all about turning dreams into reality.
 OK, that‘s my story. Hopefully if it did one thing it was to prove to you
that anyone can make their dreams come true. You can start at the bottom
and rise to the top; can turn nothing into something, pennies into fortune
    and disaster into success.

Current Environment
VUCA
 Volatile
 Uncertain
 Complex
 Ambiguous
How Rich We Are?
   $20,000 – 4.6%
   $38,5000 – 1%

Our bubble separates us from the squalor of the recent past and the want of the majority of
the earth‘s growing population. If we you reading this book, the chances are you are one of
the richest people alive today on indeed one of the riches people who have ever lived according
to Dr Stephen Barber in his book Tragedy of Riches, ―a person with post tax income of
$20,000 per year is in the wealthiest 4.6% of the world‘s 6 billion strong inhabitants, earning
18 times more than that of the typical person. To get into the top one percent, one only has to
earn $38,500 after tax Calculation
                                                                                      7
Survival of the
Fittest
Herbert Spencer - published The
principles of biology in 1864.
By 'fittest', of course, Spencer
didn't have in mind the commonly
used meaning of the word now,
i.e. the most highly trained and
physically energetic. The 'fittest'
referred to here are those animals
which are the most suited to their
environment, i.e. those which are
best fitted to survive.
The Current Climate is very clear
– We must be adaptable to
change.

Clarity
 In order for you to get where you wish to go
in your business, you need to know where you
are going in the first place
 If you don‘t know where you are going how
will you know when you get there?
 Clarity accounts for probably 80% of success and happiness. Lack of
clarity is probably more responsible for frustration and
underachievement than any other single factor– Brian Tracy
 Define your preferred success or goal in a
    clear parameter
                                                                      12

Would it Pass Daddy Test?
Identify what you want in detail and in positive terms as if you have already
reached the goal.
Can it pass what behavioral scientist Dr Robet Mager calls the Daddy Test.
Write down the goal and say Daddy come watch me ..(state the goal) If
daddy would know exactly what you are doing then it passes the Daddy test

                                                                                20

Three Approaches to Make
       This Year Your Best
1. The Personal Approach
2. The Leverage Approach
3. The Honey & Bee Approach

                                22
The Personal Approach

1. Write it Down
2. Have a Strategy
3. Start Small
4. Visualisation
5. Discipline to Focus
6. Follow Your Passion
7. Be grateful & recognised your worth
                                           23
Write it Down

 Write down your goals
 Maintain top mind awareness. What’s not top on
    your mind, gets forgotten
 Have it in your wallet
 Less than 3% of the population have written
    goals.
 Be one of them

                                                     24
                                       24
Strategy
 Having identity your goal/vision you need a
    strategy to achieve it
 Strategy originally from the ancient Greek –
strategia ―generalship – which was associated
with planning and winning of wars…is the
way an organisation seeks to pursue it
    purpose or achieve its objectives.

                                                    25
Strategy is about…Dear Ms
 In other words, strategy is about: Writing a letter starting with
    DEAR MS
 D - (direction)-Where is the business trying to get to in the long-term –
    The vision
 E- (environment)- What external, environmental factors affect the
businesses' ability to compete? Survival of the fittest is a phrase coined by
Herbert Spencer. He wasn‘t referring to this fittest in the sense of the
most highly trained and physically energetic but that those who are the
most suited to their environment, i.e. those who adapt and change will
survive. The environment around us changes, and if we don‘t change to
match it, our business will not be fit.
 A – advantage - How can the business perform better than the
competition in those markets? i.e. competitive advantage, your USP
 R - (resources - (What resources (skills, assets, finance, relationships,
technical competence, leverage, facilities) are required in order to be able
    to compete?
 M - (markets; scope)- Which markets should a business compete in and
what kind of activities are involved in such markets? Who are you target
market and what is the best medium to reach them
 S -(stakeholders) -What are the values and expectations of those who
have power in and around the business? E.g., your banks, customers,
    investor
Start Small

•Practice doing small things imperfectly
As a rule, I like to start small, because a simple plan will likely bear fruit than
something elaborate will. Remember the value of small things consistently
practiced over time in transforming life.
Starbucks built a global brand one cup at a time. What started as a single
store on Seattle‘s waterfront has grown into a company with over 1600 stores
worldwide and a new one opening every single business day
Virgin Atlantic launched with just one leased plane. Twenty-five years later,
Virgin Atlantic has a fleet of 38, flying 30 regular long-haul routes to
America, Africa, India and the Caribbean
Running the marathon – 10 in 2006, half in March 2007 before Full in April
2007 27

Starting a New Business
Many of us may have ideas about starting up a new business (side or full-
time), or even consider a career change. But the task can be daunting, so we
put it off. But taking small steps towards such a goal are relatively easy.

                                                                                  28
Power of Visualisation
your ability to create an imagination of the outcome of your thought process

Research shows that visualisation prior to any activity helps
improve your performance – a secret that star athletes and
other have know for decades 29
Discipline to Focus
 The Law of Forced Efficiency
says that there is never enough
time to do everything but there is
always enough time to do the
             most important thing.
 What is the most valuable use of
             your time NOW?

                             30
The Honey & Bee Approach
 My belief is that ―knowing‖ someone has less value than
―knowing‖ you. It is what you are known for that counts –
    (Cope, 2010)
 Positioning – become an expert in your field
 Be Google- able & Be Web-Famous – (Priestly, 2011)
 Become an author or a public speaker
 Attend high profile events and connect
 Appear on TV or radio to speak on career related topics
 Write articles for specialised journals

                                                                31
The Leveraging Approach
 Expanding Your Brand & Network
 Build Network of Enablers
 Leverage your Networks & Relationships

                                             32
The Leveraging Approach
 Expanding Your Network & Circle of Contacts

                                             33
Network of Enablers

                      34
Leveraging Your Networks &
         Contacts
 Leverage Other People (colleague, headhunter, business
partner, mastermind group, joint venture or a mentor)
 Leverage Other People‘s Contact (their friends & network)
 Leverage Other People‘s Systems
 Leverage Other People‘s Knowledge, Skills & Time
 Leverage Other People‘s Platform (e.g TV, Radio etc)
 Leverage Other People‘s Money (borrowing or tapping into
their financial resources, VC & BA)
 Leverage Other People‘s Customers (e.g. a customer
    database, Mailing List)

                                                            35

How Many People Believe That
        Knowledge Is Power?
 How many people believe that knowledge is POWER?
 Knowledge is not POWER
 Apply knowledge is POWER
 Knowledge follow regular ACTION is true POWER

                                             38
Action Is The Great Separator
          Between…
 Go Getters from Mere Dreamers
 Winners from Quitters
 Doers from Dreamers
 Walkers from Talkers
 Regular ACTION is true POWER
 Regular Activity is constant and consistent action
until the outcome has been achieved & surpassed

                                                         39
Why People Don’t Take Action
 The reason why people do not take action is – FEAR
    such as
    • Fear of Ridicule
    • Fear of rejection.
    • Fear of making decisions.
    • Fear of change.
    • Fear of confrontation.
    • Fear of loss.
    • Fear of success.
    • And of course the big one – fear of failure!
Our Deepest Fear is that We Are
         Powerful Beyond Measure
 Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our
deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is
our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and
fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child
of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. We
were born to make manifest the glory of God that is
within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And
as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other
people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from
our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
 Marianne Williamson
    in Return to Love
Often mistakenly attributed to Nelson Mandela 41
Overcoming Fear of Failure

    Analyse all potential outcomes

Consider the cost of Not acting
 Learn to think more positively

    Look at the worse-case scenario
 Have a contingency plan
 Take Action & Build on Small Successes

                                     42
Action Cures Fear

 To conquer the fear of public speaking I joined Toastmasters
International. It was the summer of 2003 when I walked into
a pub in Croydon. It was the meeting of the Toastmasters
Club. When I saw how the people spoke so eloquently there, I
asked myself: when will I be able to do this? It took me three
months my first engagement as a speaker. But I did it at last
and I am still doing it. Today I am not only an advanced
toastmaster but I am also a competent leader and the charter
    president of a toastmasters‘ club.
Action Cures Fear

 I spent my birthday of 2006 with Tony Robbins attending his Unleash the
Power. Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers
or stones. The Firewalk is the dramatic highlight of Unleash the Power
Within, the introductory three-day seminar given by personal
development guru Tony Robbins. Designed to be both a challenge to the
participants and a symbol of the change they can make to their lives, it
also served as a very effective marketing tool for Robbins‘ pricey products
    and seminars.
 This is where sane humans prance across several yards of smoking-hot,
burning coals while their fellow higher achievers and some tribal
drummers chant on. And most don‘t burn their feet, including me.
 During a fire-walking event, you almost always see a large, glowing bed
of burning coals. The bed may be 10 feet long or so. And the glowing
coals are real. People actually do walk across the red-hot coals in bare feet.
Action Cures Fear

 I remember the first time I did bar bending in 2007: I was introduced to
this by Tosin Ogunnusi, Head of Motivational Training & Personal
Development at ThinkTraining Consultancy. Tosin & I stood 6 feet apart,
rested each end of a 6 foot long Iron bar in the soft spot located in the
front of our throats, just under our Adams‘s apple. We looked into each
other‘s eye and concentrated on both our current power, as well as having
drawn up former powerful images of ourselves by the instructor. We
uttered the: Yes, Yes, Yes, I was ready: on the count three, we began to
walk towards each other. UNBELIEVABLE! Yes, right in front of our
eyes and throats, that 6 foot long once staff iron bar bent into a U shape
between us, the belly of the U iron bar touching the ground. What a
glorious and exciting illustration that our minds have incredible powers, if
only we can channel it. My message to you today for you who fear that
you can do something, take action, feel the fear and do it any way.
Now or Later?
       Are You A Procrastinator?
 An ineffective plan executed today
 A procrastinator is a person who postpones a task or duty intentionally
    without a valuable explanation
 A perfectionist procrastinator is the person who postpones a task or duty
not intentionally but because it is not yet perfect. A perfectionist
procrastinator spends a lot of time researching and trying to perfect
things before embarking on it. They strife for perfection all the time
including the first time they attempt something.
 ―Don't wait. The time will never be just right.‖ By Napoleon Hill
 Done is better than perfect – Facebook
 They procrastinate. Tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and it
never comes. So many people wake up one day and discover they are old.
And their youthful dreams are gone forever.‖ – Robin Seiger - 42 Days to
    Wealth, Health & Happiness

                                                                            46
Done is Better Than Perfect

Facebook‘s Founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote a letter to prospective
shareholders in which he said, “We have the words ‗Done is better
than perfect‘ painted on our walls to remind ourselves to always keep
shipping”.
Power of Now
Action Exercise
• Think of the things in the past that you thought you
    couldn‘t do?
• How did you make it happened and what skills did you
    use?
• Given your current situation, what three steps can you
take today? How can you get started?
• Close your eyes, look back to one year from today, all
the things you have written have been accomplished,
how does it make you feel?
• The first is get to it! Get started; take the first action at
    hand.

                                                 49
Take Action Everyday
 To become fit, go for a walk. To create the business of your
dreams, call someone today. Want a promotion or a
raise? Make that extra contribution today!
 Do something everyday
 There are only 527, 040 minutes in a leap year – utilise it
    wisely!
 "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step",
but 5,280,000 additional steps require after that first
one! Every day, take one step closer.
 Remember people don’t get to heaven without dying
 Don‘t wait for opportunity
 Small, Smart Action +Consistency + Time = Radical
    Difference
 As the famous Nike sports logo says just do it!

                                                                   50

Review
……a retrospective analysis of what you have just done

 Review actual performance/progress and goals against planned
    performance
 At the beginning (or end) of each month, review your progress for the
past month, and set your goals for the coming month. Set easily
achievable goals — it‘s better to set your sights low (at least at first) and
achieve them than to set them too high and fail. Monthly goals should be
mini-goals of your overall yearly goals.
 At a set time each week (Mondays work for me), review your progress for
the last week, and set goals for the week. These goals should be mini-
goals for your monthly goals. For each of these goals, list a few action
steps. Then schedule the action steps throughout the week (one step per
    day is ideal).

Thinking differently and having the courage of conviction is an
essential law of success in a down economy

M&M
In August 2003 I launched M&M. What made it unique was that instead a
publishing a society magazine, we settled for something different, an innovative
music and movie magazine that comes with a CD. 55

How Do You Manage Your Day
 Plan It out On paper
 What are the Three Most Important Things?
 ABCDE Strategy
 Apply the 2-minute rule
 Review at the end of the day
 Each day, when planning your day, make your goal
action step for that day be one of your Most
    Important Things for that day.

                                         57
Believe
You! You!! You!!!
 If the three most important words in real estate are location!
Location!! Location! the three most important words in
achieving your success in life are, YOU! YOU!! YOU!!! You
must believe in yourself. It is said that people succeed when
others do not believe in them. Rarely does a person succeed
when he does not believe in himself. You have to have self
belief to get anywhere in life.
 According to Venus Williams, the Olympic gold medallist
and professional tennis champion, ―you have to believe in
yourself when nobody else does. That‘s what makes you a
winner‖. The size of your success is determined by the size of your
belief. - David Schwartz - The Magic of Thinking Big
 When I was writing my book ―4 indispensable Strategies for
Success‖ the first person I told said to me, ―Dayo, you must be
a joker and a dreamer. What do you know?‖ But I believed
in my ability to make it happen and today the book is now a
best seller in UK and Nigeria. When no one believed in me, I
believed in myself and achieved more then anyone thought
    possible.
Believe
Dame Anita Roddick
 When it comes to Belief, Anita Roddick‘s case is a great
example. Anita had a strong belief that business could be
carried out in a completely defferent way; trading fairly,
helping communities and producing products that are kind to
animals and the environment. She believed in it and that
belief generated the drive and action. As a result , BODY
shop achieved huge success, turning into a a multi-million
pound business with stores in the high street in the uk, the us
and across the world in the 1980s and 1990s. The success
started at a time when many pundits believed that building an
ethical business in this way would not be practical, plausible
    or possible
 The company was one of the first to prohibit the use of
ingredients tested on animals and one of the first to promote
fair trade with third world countries.
 Roddick opened the first Body Shop with the aim of making
an income for herself and her two daughters,

Power of Affirmation & Positive Self-Talk
I, (inset your name) am an honest, intelligent, goal-oriented, organised, responsible,
                           committed and punctual individual.
I am highly motivated, optimistic, enthusiastic, positive, focused and a self-starter. I
am decisive, competent, disciplined, persistent, knowledgeable, creative, resourceful
team player who makes choices. I am an emotional, intelligent, confident believer
                                   and an extra-miller.
I am energised, I have great self-control and a healthy self-image, and I manage my
self-well. These are the qualities of the winner I was born to be and by using them
every day, I will maintain my momentum and have employment security in a no-job
security world. These will also enable me to get more of the things money will buy
and more of the things money won’t buy.
I am so happy and grateful that money now comes to me in increasing quantities
through multiple sources on a continuous basis.
It’s tough out there but I continue to be a winner.
Special thanks to Zig Ziglar, Bob Proctor and Phillip Green for inspiring this self-talk
                                                                                                    64
Sticability
Sticability – Keep going &
      Never give up
Persistence is Important.
 The act of holding firmly and steadfastly to a purpose, state,
goal, or undertaking despite obstacles, warnings, or setbacks.
 Achieving your desired vision will not be easy. Then again,
living a life of frustration, disappointment and continual
    under-achievement is not any easier.
So why not opt for the former hard work instead of the latter?
 Be persistent. Nothing can replace it. The less talented will
overcome the more talented, and the tortoise will beat the
hare. You will need to be persistent, because achieving
anything worthwhile takes time and effort. You may have to
even face ridicule. Persistence will get you through.
 US president Calvin Coolidge hit the nail on the head when
he said, nothing in the word can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful
men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated
derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
    omnipotent.
Ordinary & Extra Ordinary People
 What separates ordinary people from extra ordinary people is
that little extra. When you make a decision today to go extra
mile and apply what you have learnt today from tomorrow
you will become extra ordinary and that is who you are. I
challenge you to become one, because you can. I think the
writer and mountain climber James Ullman summed it all up
when he said something like, ‗Challenge is the core and
mainspring of all human action. If there‘s an ocean, we cross
it. If there‘s a disease, we cure it. If there‘s a wrong, we right
it. If there‘s a record, we break it. And if there‘s a mountain,
    we climb it.
One More Thing
 Plan for reducing expenses and
conserving cash. Beware of that little
expenses. A small leak will sink a
    great ship
You Got The Power
 You can start at the bottom and rise to the top
 You can turn nothing into something,
 You can turn pennies into fortune and disaster
    into success.
 You Got the Power! To create magic in all
    areas of your life
 You Got the Power! To be successful
 You Got the Power! To make 2013 your best
year ever because YOU ARE A UNIQUE &
    MASTERPIECE CREATION
You Got The Power
 You have a unique talent, skills and capabilities
 You have a unique voiceprint, palm print, footprint
    and fingerprint
 You have a unique destiny that only you can fulfil
 You have a unique history and never in the history
of the world has someone like you existed
 You have a unique genetic code. You have a unique
DNA which can distinguish you from any other
person living or dead. Some have even suggested
that your DNA carries with it the wisdom of
    previous generations.
 Above all you are endowed with the seeds of
    greatness.‘ YOU GOT THE POWER!
You Got The Power!

How to make 2013 your best year by dayo olomu

  • 1. How to Make 2013 Your Best Year Croydon Tabernacle London 1 Sunday 10 February 2013
  • 2. 5 Things to share  I got five things I‘ll like to share with you today if applied will make 2013 your best year ever.  So let‘s get started.  I have not come here to impress but to express. To draw from within you the power you already possess. All you need to achieve your goals lies within you. Educate in Latin means - draw out. All the strategies that I will be sharing with you today are within you. I am just here to draw them out.  I don‘t just want positive evaluation and bizarre behaviour for one week. I want you to be different three months from now. At the end of the seminar I want you to share one thing you plan on doing differently as a result of my presentation. That will be our summary. After all, what you receive to make a difference is more important than what I say. When you leave here today you will have solutions to how to set and achieve your goals.
  • 3. My Story  Permit me to introduced myself properly  I am a study in doggedness and an example of how anyone can overcome adversity to succeed and thus become an inspiration to others. Born in Islington, North London and taken to Nigeria when I was two years old. I got an early jolt in life, when barely eight, my father died. From then life became a struggle. At 10 years old I acquired the thirst to achieve from hawking cold drinks and biscuits on the streets of Lagos to support my mother who sold all her personal belongings to send me to school. In Nigeria I had a varied and interesting career in the entertainment industry from being a Promotions Manager to an Artiste Manager.
  • 4. My Story  To conquer poverty, which was my greatest fear when I was growing up, I relocated to London in January 1996 thinking that London‘s roads are littered with gold and silver. When I arrived I was shocked to discover that a crook had stolen my birth certificate and used it to collect my National Insurance card, credit card, and even opened a bank account. I also discovered I was purportedly married except the crook forgot to invite him. Everywhere I went, I was told somebody was bearing my name. At a stage the authorities did not know who the real Dayo Olomu was. With a strong desire to succeed backed with clarity, action, self belief and my faith, I overcame these obstacles and that little boy who celebrated his 10th birthday at a bus garage in Lagos whose identity was stolen when he came back to live in London is now a social entrepreneur; business improvement consultant, success strategist, corporate trainer, lifestyle business coach and a motivational speaker, a television personality, an agent of positive change and most importantly a husband and a father.
  • 5. My Story  May I say that it is not by my power nor by my might but by His grace because if God did not build the house those who labour, in Vain ―The greatest lesson I have learnt from my experience is that to be successful you must have strong faith and a vision that drives you. You must have a strong desire to succeed and back that desire with action. You must have absolute believe in yourself, know that you have what it takes to be successful and when setbacks or tragedies occur, never, ever give up; instead see them as opportunities for growth because success thrives on adversity.‖ I think that is enough about me. My story isn‘t unique – many others have realised their dreams just as I have. But it does go to show that you can achieve whatever you want to if you have a strong desire to succeed and backed that desire with action and self belief. My story is all about turning dreams into reality.  OK, that‘s my story. Hopefully if it did one thing it was to prove to you that anyone can make their dreams come true. You can start at the bottom and rise to the top; can turn nothing into something, pennies into fortune and disaster into success. 
  • 6. Current Environment VUCA  Volatile  Uncertain  Complex  Ambiguous
  • 7. How Rich We Are?  $20,000 – 4.6%  $38,5000 – 1% Our bubble separates us from the squalor of the recent past and the want of the majority of the earth‘s growing population. If we you reading this book, the chances are you are one of the richest people alive today on indeed one of the riches people who have ever lived according to Dr Stephen Barber in his book Tragedy of Riches, ―a person with post tax income of $20,000 per year is in the wealthiest 4.6% of the world‘s 6 billion strong inhabitants, earning 18 times more than that of the typical person. To get into the top one percent, one only has to earn $38,500 after tax Calculation 7
  • 8. Survival of the Fittest Herbert Spencer - published The principles of biology in 1864. By 'fittest', of course, Spencer didn't have in mind the commonly used meaning of the word now, i.e. the most highly trained and physically energetic. The 'fittest' referred to here are those animals which are the most suited to their environment, i.e. those which are best fitted to survive. The Current Climate is very clear – We must be adaptable to change.

Survival of the fittest is a phrase coined by Herbert Spencer. He wasn‘t referring to this fittest in the sense of the most highly trained and physically energetic but that those who are the most suited to their environment, i.e. those who adapt and change will survive. The environment around us changes, and if we don‘t change to match it, our business will not be fit.  A – advantage - How can the business perform better than the competition in those markets? i.e. competitive advantage, your USP  R - (resources - (What resources (skills, assets, finance, relationships, technical competence, leverage, facilities) are required in order to be able to compete?  M - (markets; scope)- Which markets should a business compete in and what kind of activities are involved in such markets? • 27. Start Small •Practice doing small things imperfectly As a rule, I like to start small, because a simple plan will likely bear fruit than something elaborate will. Remember the value of small things consistently practiced over time in transforming life. Starbucks built a global brand one cup at a time. What started as a single store on Seattle‘s waterfront has grown into a company with over 1600 stores worldwide and a new one opening every single business day Virgin Atlantic launched with just one leased plane. Twenty-five years later, Virgin Atlantic has a fleet of 38, flying 30 regular long-haul routes to America, Africa, India and the Caribbean Running the marathon – 10 in 2006, half in March 2007 before Full in April 2007 27
  • 28. But the task can be daunting, so we put it off. But taking small steps towards such a goal are relatively easy. 28
  • 29. Power of Visualisation your ability to create an imagination of the outcome of your thought process Research shows that visualisation prior to any activity helps improve your performance – a secret that star athletes and other have know for decades 29
  • 30. Discipline to Focus  The Law of Forced Efficiency says that there is never enough time to do everything but there is always enough time to do the most important thing.  What is the most valuable use of your time NOW? 30
  • 31. The Honey & Bee Approach  My belief is that ―knowing‖ someone has less value than ―knowing‖ you. It is what you are known for that counts – (Cope, 2010)  Positioning – become an expert in your field  Be Google- able & Be Web-Famous – (Priestly, 2011)  Become an author or a public speaker  Attend high profile events and connect  Appear on TV or radio to speak on career related topics  Write articles for specialised journals 31
  • 32. The Leveraging Approach  Expanding Your Brand & Network  Build Network of Enablers  Leverage your Networks & Relationships 32
  • 33. The Leveraging Approach  Expanding Your Network & Circle of Contacts 33
  • 35. Leveraging Your Networks & Contacts  Leverage Other People (colleague, headhunter, business partner, mastermind group, joint venture or a mentor)  Leverage Other People‘s Contact (their friends & network)  Leverage Other People‘s Systems  Leverage Other People‘s Knowledge, Skills & Time  Leverage Other People‘s Platform (e.g TV, Radio etc)  Leverage Other People‘s Money (borrowing or tapping into their financial resources, VC & BA)  Leverage Other People‘s Customers (e.g. a customer database, Mailing List) 35
  • 36. How To Leverage Your Networking  For further info on how to leverage your networking please go to: http://www.slideshare.net/Dayo-Olomu/leveraging- your-networking-by-dayo-olomu
  • 37. What Do They have In Common? ACTION Kanya King - Mobo Madonna - Music Sir Richard Branson - Virgin David Beckham - Football Oprah Winfrey - TV Bill Gates - Microsoft 37
  • 38. How Many People Believe That Knowledge Is Power?  How many people believe that knowledge is POWER?  Knowledge is not POWER  Apply knowledge is POWER  Knowledge follow regular ACTION is true POWER 38
  • 39. Action Is The Great Separator Between…  Go Getters from Mere Dreamers  Winners from Quitters  Doers from Dreamers  Walkers from Talkers  Regular ACTION is true POWER  Regular Activity is constant and consistent action until the outcome has been achieved & surpassed 39
  • 40. Why People Don’t Take Action  The reason why people do not take action is – FEAR such as • Fear of Ridicule • Fear of rejection. • Fear of making decisions. • Fear of change. • Fear of confrontation. • Fear of loss. • Fear of success. • And of course the big one – fear of failure!
  • 41. Our Deepest Fear is that We Are Powerful Beyond Measure  Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.  Marianne Williamson in Return to Love Often mistakenly attributed to Nelson Mandela 41
  • 42. Overcoming Fear of Failure  Analyse all potential outcomes  Consider the cost of Not acting  Learn to think more positively  Look at the worse-case scenario  Have a contingency plan  Take Action & Build on Small Successes 42
  • 43. Action Cures Fear  To conquer the fear of public speaking I joined Toastmasters International. It was the summer of 2003 when I walked into a pub in Croydon. It was the meeting of the Toastmasters Club. When I saw how the people spoke so eloquently there, I asked myself: when will I be able to do this? It took me three months my first engagement as a speaker. But I did it at last and I am still doing it. Today I am not only an advanced toastmaster but I am also a competent leader and the charter president of a toastmasters‘ club.
  • 44. Action Cures Fear  I spent my birthday of 2006 with Tony Robbins attending his Unleash the Power. Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers or stones. The Firewalk is the dramatic highlight of Unleash the Power Within, the introductory three-day seminar given by personal development guru Tony Robbins. Designed to be both a challenge to the participants and a symbol of the change they can make to their lives, it also served as a very effective marketing tool for Robbins‘ pricey products and seminars.  This is where sane humans prance across several yards of smoking-hot, burning coals while their fellow higher achievers and some tribal drummers chant on. And most don‘t burn their feet, including me.  During a fire-walking event, you almost always see a large, glowing bed of burning coals. The bed may be 10 feet long or so. And the glowing coals are real. People actually do walk across the red-hot coals in bare feet.
  • 45. Action Cures Fear  I remember the first time I did bar bending in 2007: I was introduced to this by Tosin Ogunnusi, Head of Motivational Training & Personal Development at ThinkTraining Consultancy. Tosin & I stood 6 feet apart, rested each end of a 6 foot long Iron bar in the soft spot located in the front of our throats, just under our Adams‘s apple. We looked into each other‘s eye and concentrated on both our current power, as well as having drawn up former powerful images of ourselves by the instructor. We uttered the: Yes, Yes, Yes, I was ready: on the count three, we began to walk towards each other. UNBELIEVABLE! Yes, right in front of our eyes and throats, that 6 foot long once staff iron bar bent into a U shape between us, the belly of the U iron bar touching the ground. What a glorious and exciting illustration that our minds have incredible powers, if only we can channel it. My message to you today for you who fear that you can do something, take action, feel the fear and do it any way.
  • 46. Now or Later? Are You A Procrastinator?  An ineffective plan executed today  A procrastinator is a person who postpones a task or duty intentionally without a valuable explanation  A perfectionist procrastinator is the person who postpones a task or duty not intentionally but because it is not yet perfect. A perfectionist procrastinator spends a lot of time researching and trying to perfect things before embarking on it. They strife for perfection all the time including the first time they attempt something.  ―Don't wait. The time will never be just right.‖ By Napoleon Hill  Done is better than perfect – Facebook  They procrastinate. Tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and it never comes. So many people wake up one day and discover they are old. And their youthful dreams are gone forever.‖ – Robin Seiger - 42 Days to Wealth, Health & Happiness 46
  • 47. Done is Better Than Perfect Facebook‘s Founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote a letter to prospective shareholders in which he said, “We have the words ‗Done is better than perfect‘ painted on our walls to remind ourselves to always keep shipping”.
  • 49. Action Exercise • Think of the things in the past that you thought you couldn‘t do? • How did you make it happened and what skills did you use? • Given your current situation, what three steps can you take today? How can you get started? • Close your eyes, look back to one year from today, all the things you have written have been accomplished, how does it make you feel? • The first is get to it! Get started; take the first action at hand. 49
  • 50. Take Action Everyday  To become fit, go for a walk. To create the business of your dreams, call someone today. Want a promotion or a raise? Make that extra contribution today!  Do something everyday  There are only 527, 040 minutes in a leap year – utilise it wisely!  "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", but 5,280,000 additional steps require after that first one! Every day, take one step closer.  Remember people don’t get to heaven without dying  Don‘t wait for opportunity  Small, Smart Action +Consistency + Time = Radical Difference  As the famous Nike sports logo says just do it! 50
  • 51. Reflection  Golden Hour – My most important task of the day  Weekly – Sunday at 9pm  Travel Time  Quarterly  Yearly – March
  • 52. Reflection – Review - Restrategise Ashburnham Place, Battle East Sussex
  • 53. Review ……a retrospective analysis of what you have just done  Review actual performance/progress and goals against planned performance  At the beginning (or end) of each month, review your progress for the past month, and set your goals for the coming month. Set easily achievable goals — it‘s better to set your sights low (at least at first) and achieve them than to set them too high and fail. Monthly goals should be mini-goals of your overall yearly goals.  At a set time each week (Mondays work for me), review your progress for the last week, and set goals for the week. These goals should be mini- goals for your monthly goals. For each of these goals, list a few action steps. Then schedule the action steps throughout the week (one step per day is ideal).
  • 54. Think Different Thinking differently and having the courage of conviction is an essential law of success in a down economy
  • 55. M&M M&M In August 2003 I launched M&M. What made it unique was that instead a publishing a society magazine, we settled for something different, an innovative music and movie magazine that comes with a CD. 55
  • 56. Think Different 2007 … A big part of my armoury and my secret weapon to slay the Dragons, was my Guitar and singing my ‗sauce song‘ live on the show. It‘s never been done before…First Rasta man too. Levi Roots –His business is now worth over £8m Levi Roots
  • 57. How Do You Manage Your Day  Plan It out On paper  What are the Three Most Important Things?  ABCDE Strategy  Apply the 2-minute rule  Review at the end of the day  Each day, when planning your day, make your goal action step for that day be one of your Most Important Things for that day. 57
  • 59. You! You!! You!!!  If the three most important words in real estate are location! Location!! Location! the three most important words in achieving your success in life are, YOU! YOU!! YOU!!! You must believe in yourself. It is said that people succeed when others do not believe in them. Rarely does a person succeed when he does not believe in himself. You have to have self belief to get anywhere in life.  According to Venus Williams, the Olympic gold medallist and professional tennis champion, ―you have to believe in yourself when nobody else does. That‘s what makes you a winner‖. The size of your success is determined by the size of your belief. - David Schwartz - The Magic of Thinking Big  When I was writing my book ―4 indispensable Strategies for Success‖ the first person I told said to me, ―Dayo, you must be a joker and a dreamer. What do you know?‖ But I believed in my ability to make it happen and today the book is now a best seller in UK and Nigeria. When no one believed in me, I believed in myself and achieved more then anyone thought possible.
  • 61. Dame Anita Roddick  When it comes to Belief, Anita Roddick‘s case is a great example. Anita had a strong belief that business could be carried out in a completely defferent way; trading fairly, helping communities and producing products that are kind to animals and the environment. She believed in it and that belief generated the drive and action. As a result , BODY shop achieved huge success, turning into a a multi-million pound business with stores in the high street in the uk, the us and across the world in the 1980s and 1990s. The success started at a time when many pundits believed that building an ethical business in this way would not be practical, plausible or possible  The company was one of the first to prohibit the use of ingredients tested on animals and one of the first to promote fair trade with third world countries.  Roddick opened the first Body Shop with the aim of making an income for herself and her two daughters,
  • 62. What Do You Say to Yourself? 62
  • 63. What Do You Say to Yourself? Power of Affirmation the making of verbal statements of the desires outcome of your thought process 27.05.2006 09.09.2008 …the making of verbal statements of the desires outcome of your thought process 63
  • 64. Power of Affirmation & Positive Self-Talk I, (inset your name) am an honest, intelligent, goal-oriented, organised, responsible, committed and punctual individual. I am highly motivated, optimistic, enthusiastic, positive, focused and a self-starter. I am decisive, competent, disciplined, persistent, knowledgeable, creative, resourceful team player who makes choices. I am an emotional, intelligent, confident believer and an extra-miller. I am energised, I have great self-control and a healthy self-image, and I manage my self-well. These are the qualities of the winner I was born to be and by using them every day, I will maintain my momentum and have employment security in a no-job security world. These will also enable me to get more of the things money will buy and more of the things money won’t buy. I am so happy and grateful that money now comes to me in increasing quantities through multiple sources on a continuous basis. It’s tough out there but I continue to be a winner. Special thanks to Zig Ziglar, Bob Proctor and Phillip Green for inspiring this self-talk 64
  • 66. Sticability – Keep going & Never give up
  • 67. Persistence is Important.  The act of holding firmly and steadfastly to a purpose, state, goal, or undertaking despite obstacles, warnings, or setbacks.  Achieving your desired vision will not be easy. Then again, living a life of frustration, disappointment and continual under-achievement is not any easier. So why not opt for the former hard work instead of the latter?  Be persistent. Nothing can replace it. The less talented will overcome the more talented, and the tortoise will beat the hare. You will need to be persistent, because achieving anything worthwhile takes time and effort. You may have to even face ridicule. Persistence will get you through.  US president Calvin Coolidge hit the nail on the head when he said, nothing in the word can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

When you make a decision today to go extra mile and apply what you have learnt today from tomorrow you will become extra ordinary and that is who you are. I challenge you to become one, because you can. I think the writer and mountain climber James Ullman summed it all up when he said something like, ‗Challenge is the core and mainspring of all human action. If there‘s an ocean, we cross it. If there‘s a disease, we cure it. If there‘s a wrong, we right it. If there‘s a record, we break it. And if there‘s a mountain, we climb it.

Editor's Notes

  1. In other words, strategy is about: Writing a letter starting with DEAR MSD - (direction)-Where is the business trying to get to in the long-term – The visionE- (environment)- What external, environmental factors affect the businesses' ability to compete? Survival of the fittest is a phrase coined by Herbert Spencer. He wasn’t referring to this fittest in the sense of the most highly trained and physically energetic but that those who are the most suited to their environment, i.e. those who adapt and change will survive. The environment around us changes, and if we don’t change to match it, our business will not be fit.A – advantage- How can the business perform better than the competition in those markets? i.e. competitive advantage, your USPR - (resources - (What resources (skills, assets, finance, relationships, technical competence, leverage, facilities) are required in order to be able to compete? M - (markets; scope)- Which markets should a business compete in and what kind of activities are involved in such markets? Who are you target market and what is the best medium to reach themS -(stakeholders) -What are the values and expectations of those who have power in and around the business? E.g., your banks, customers, investorThe origin of strategy are military and concern the art of planning and winning wars A strategos was a general in command in the Greek army.Originally strategy - from the ancient Greek – strategia “generalship – was associated with planning and winning of ways. The word “strategy” is derived from the Greek word “stratçgos”; stratus (meaning army) and “ago” (meaning leading/moving).Strategy is an action that managers take to attain one or more of the organization’s goals. Strategy can also be defined as “A general direction set for the company and its various components to achieve a desired state in the future. Strategy results from the detailed strategic planning process”.A strategy is all about integrating organizational activities and utilizing and allocating the scarce resources within the organizational environment so as to meet the present objectives. While planning a strategy it is essential to consider that decisions are not taken in a vaccum and that any act taken by a firm is likely to be met by a reaction from those affected, competitors, customers, employees or suppliers.Strategy can also be defined as knowledge of the goals, the uncertainty of events and the need to take into consideration the likely or actual behavior of others. Strategy is the blueprint of decisions in an organization that shows its objectives and goals, reduces the key policies, and plans for achieving these goals, and defines the business the company is to carry on, the type of economic and human organization it wants to be, and the contribution it plans to make to its shareholders, customers and society at large. Features of StrategyStrategy is Significant because it is not possible to foresee the future. Without a perfect foresight, the firms must be ready to deal with the uncertain events which constitute the business environment. Strategy deals with long term developments rather than routine operations, i.e. it deals with probability of innovations or new products, new methods of productions, or new markets to be developed in future. Strategy is created to take into account the probable behavior of customers and competitors. Strategies dealing with employees will predict the employee behavior. Strategy is a well defined roadmap of an organization. It defines the overall mission, vision and direction of an organization. The objective of a strategy is to maximize an organization’s strengths and to minimize the strengths of the competitors.Strategy, in short, bridges the gap between “where we are” and “where we want to be”.
  2. DebriefWhat did I want happen? What actually happen? What caused the gap – or what contributed to its success? What am I going to do about it next time?
  3. When it comes to Belief, Anita Roddick’s case is a great example. The success started at a time when many pundits believed that building an ethical business in this way would not be practical, plausible or possibleThe company was one of the first to prohibit the use of ingredients tested on animals and one of the first to promote fair trade with third world countries. Roddick opened the first Body Shop with the aim of making an income for herself and her two daughters,
  4. Keep moving and never give up. Life works in cycles and moves to a rhythm. You will have up and down. When you hit a slow point or things don’t seem to be moving, don’t give up, keep going. You are going to hit the wallThe act of holding firmly and steadfastly to a purpose, state, goal, or undertaking despite obstacles, warnings, or setbacks. Achieving your desired vision will not be easy. Then again, living a life of frustration, disappointment and continual under-achievement is not any easier. So why not opt for the former hard work instead of the latter?Be persistent. Nothing can replace it. The less talented will overcome the more talented, and the tortoise will beat the hare. You will need to be persistent, because achieving anything worthwhile takes time and effort. You may have to even face ridicule. Persistence will get you through.US president Calvin Coolidge hit the nail on the head when he said, nothing in the word can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
  5. SUMARISE AND TAKE QUESTIONS BEFORE ROUNDING UP WITH YOU GOT THE POWER! I want you to share one thing you plan on doing differently as a result of my presentation. I want you to also write 1 goal that you will achieve in a month. Give it to the person sitting next to you with your contact address; the person will post it to you on that date. What separates ordinary people from extra ordinary people is that little extra. When you make a decision today to ……., (summary of my topic/presentation) you will become extra ordinary and that is who you are. I challenge you to become one, because you can. I think the writer and mountain climber James Ullman summed it all up when he said something like, ‘Challenge is the core and mainspring of all human action. If there’s an ocean, we cross it.
