In their Global Interim Economic Outlook for March 2017, the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) notes that global economic growth should pick up modestly
next year, thanks to continuing and expected combined fiscal and structural initiatives in the major
economies – most notably China,Canada, and the United States.
However, this growth is vulnerable to the multiple risks of rising protectionism, financial
vulnerabilities, potential volatility from divergent interest rate paths, and disconnects between
market valuation and real activity.
The OECD report explains that rising protectionism threatens the number of jobs that depend on
trade, while the rapid growth of private sector credit and the relatively high level of indebtedness is a
key risk in a number of emerging markets, especially in China.
Housing valuations are another matter of concern in some advanced economies, where the strength
of financial market valuations appear disconnected from the outlook for the “real” economy, where
the growth in consumption and investment remains sluggish.

The opening shot in a fifth softwood-lumber war between the United States and Canada is expected
this week, and policy-makers north of the border are preparing to calculate the potential damage of
American duties.
The U.S.Commerce Department is likely to announceTuesday the first of two anticipated duties on
Canadian softwood, which would be applied on Canadian imports as they were in disputes in the

Canada's central bank cited in its latest policy review uncertainty in lumber as a reason behind

China'sTCL Group on Friday said U.S. protectionism is the biggest hurdle to Chinese
firms going global, and that the electronics maker had been told it may not win
approval in its bid to buy a U.S. technology firm.
"We have an acquisition deal in the U.S. It's been over half a year. It is still not approved
by the government," Chairman Li Dongsheng said on the sidelines of an event in Hong
Kong.
