December 2011 - Michigan Energy Forum - Valerie BraderAnnArborSPARK
The December Michigan Energy Forum is themed "The 2011 Year In Review and 2012 Look Forward for Michigan Based Energy Businesses." As an introduction to the evening, we are looking to celebrate the wins and accomplishments made by energy companies in Michigan.
The MEEA Policy Webinar took a regional look at the rapid growth of utility energy efficiency programs over the last decade. Dan York, from ACEEE, presented on the newly released ACEEE report Three Decades and Counting: A Historical Review and Current Assessment of Electric Utility Energy Efficiency Activity in the States . Dan focused on the Midwest region and the growth of utility energy efficiency programs. Diane Munns, from MidAmerican Energy Company, spoke on the utility’s program approach, lessons learned, and achievements from the company’s energy efficiency programs. Karen Rhodes, from Xcel Energy, discussed the utility's program growth, lessons learned, and the benefits of the utility's long term commitment to energy efficiency. The webinar concluded with attendees joining the discussion with the presenters, and asking several questions. For additional information, or if you have any questions, please contact Jessica Collingsworth at jcollingsworth@mwalliance.org or at (312)784-7247.
The MEEA Policy Webinar: National Study on the Energy Savings of Appliance Standards was held on Thursday March 29, 2012. The webinar outlined the recently released report, The Efficiency Boom: Cashing In on the Savings from Appliance Standards by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP) and the American Council on an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The webinar highlighted some of the key findings from the report, particularly the enormous savings that have already been achieved from existing standards and the potential for additional savings from new and updated standards. The report reviewed 34 products, and the webinar focused on three areas: products appropriate for state standards; products where state support is requested at the federal level; and products currently covered by utility programs. A regional look was given on the current and potential cost effective savings from appliance standards, as well as an in-depth look at specific natural gas-fired products that are relevant to the Midwest including: clothes washers, boilers, furnaces, and unit heaters. The webinar concluded with a discussion that focused on gas programs and analysis of the potential impact of standards on the cost effectiveness of utility programs.

A biomass energy feasibility study prepared for Northwestern Energy. Currently the U.S. Forest Service implements thinning projects by paying contractors to cut and pile trees and brush, then either burning the slash itself or paying contractors to burn also. A more cost-efficient alternative might be to market the smallwood rather than burn it; a complementary alternative would be to increase the efficiency of smallwood removal.
Heading an alliance of industry executives, forest contractors and government agencies, MCDC coordinated the publication of a 2004 white paper entitled A Study of How to Decrease the Costs of Collecting, Processing and Transporting Slash.
The study found that in certain situations, slash removal could be made economically viable through the use of trucks equipped with hooklifts and roll on/off containers, because these trucks can reach slash piles that are too remote for large chip vans.
Since the study’s publication, significant conceptual advances in forest-related roll on/off container technology have been made. This report will summarize those advances. It will also outline several new studies that are now underway to test the economic and environmental viability of these new technologies.

Ten percent of the world’s population lives on islands. The majority of the islands face challenges filling the gap between energy supply and demand, especially islands in countries consisting of many islands. The development of the national multi-island energy system is influenced by country characteristics, technology readiness, political support, etc. This paper uses the development of the Philippines’ energy system as case study for analyzing the challenges, opportunities, and influential factors for the development and integration of a national multi-island energy system. The paper concludes its analysis by presenting a framework for multi-island energy system design with the consideration of both single and multi-islands.

Fundamentals Of Space Systems & Space Subsystems course samplerJim Jenkins
This course in space systems and space subsystems is for technical and management personnel who wish to gain an understanding of the important technical concepts in the development of space instrumentation, subsystems, and systems. The goal is to assist students to achieve their professional potential by endowing them with an understanding of the subsystems and supporting disciplines important to developing space instrumentation, space subsystems, and space systems. It designed for participants who expect to plan, design, build, integrate, test, launch, operate or manage subsystems, space systems, launch vehicles, spacecraft, payloads, or ground systems. The objective is to expose each participant to the fundamentals of each subsystem and their inter-relations, to not necessarily make each student a systems engineer, but to give aerospace engineers and managers a technically based space systems perspective. The fundamental concepts are introduced and illustrated by state-of-the-art examples. This course differs from the typical space systems course in that the technical aspects of each important subsystem are addressed.

Japan now funding R&D in LENR technology for use in power generation applications. Quietly threw down the gauntlet to global oil industry.
January 2018: terse project report summarizing progress in Japanese government NEDO-funded R&D in LENRs for period of Oct. 2015 through Oct. 2017 was released by Technova Inc. on ResearchGate. Herein we will review and discuss NEDO project’s reported progress.
Project scientists reported significant R&D progress toward developing LENR devices that serve as powerful heat sources. Reproducibility of device fabrication techniques and excess heat output were improved. Certain nanocomposite, multi-metal LENR test devices with mass <140 grams cumulatively produced up to ~85 megajoules (MJ) of excess heat per mole (MJ/mol) of absorbed Hydrogen (H) or Deuterium (D); some: duration of heat > 1 month. By contrast, complete combustion of Hydrogen releases ~0.286 MJ/mol of H. Chemical processes cannot explain these results.
Japan, Inc. appears to be developing LENR technology to someday replace the internal combustion engine.

Freund p-holes provide a new electronic mechanism for transferring and dissipating energy in Earth’s upper crust besides known mechano-acoustic seismic P- and S-wave processes - this is a paradigm shift in geophysical thinking. p-holes can power electric bacteria and LENR neutron-catalyzed nucleosynthesis (transmutation of elements) in Earth’s crust; these create measurable products at low rates over geological time – a paradigm shift in geochemistry. There is published experimental evidence that supports these conjectures and further suggests that p-holes and LENRs facilitate earthquakes and other seismic processes. Geophysical processes on Earth may be modulated by neutrino fluxes coming from the Sun via e + p neutrino interactions; explains otherwise inexplicable Russian data.
