The Evolution Of Amputations
Amputations have and always will be a part of international life. From the gruesome details of
amputations in the early ages to the civilized and innovative amputations today. There are many
myths and fears that follow amputation. Some of the fears are about life after amputation and how
to obtain the proper prostheses and physical therapy. The evolution of amputation asserts the
changes in this type of surgeryand the advances in prosthesis so that the general public can
understand the breakthroughs that have been made in this gruesome surgery. Amputation is an
ancient surgery, there are traces of amputation that date back to 15th century B. C. (Thurston 1).
Notwithstanding, amputations were happening all over the world, social stigma was still attached
to the surgery. In the Middle East, the most common reason for amputation was punishment for
crimes (Sellegren 13). The non medical amputation helped give the negative... Show more content

Phantom limb is the feeling or sensation that the limb is still present (Atkins 11).Phantom limb
syndrome has also been an issue since the beginning of amputations. The difference is that now
phantom limb syndrome can enhance the healing process by training the arm for prosthetics
especially when myoelectric control is present (16). In 1837 Robert Liston introduced a flap
amputation like the one used today (22). Flap amputation is where a flap of tissue and muscle is
left over to cover the bone (22). This helped to decrease infection, shorten recovery time, and
increase mobility in the limb (Atkins 9). One of the first functional prosthetics was the Anglesea
leg created by James Potts (Sellegren 23). The prosthetic was named Anglesea leg because
Marquis of Anglesea made it popular after he lost his leg in the battle of Waterloo (23). In 1839
Potts leg was finally introduces into the United States but didn t become universally accepted until
decades later

Herbert Hoover, One of the Worst Presidents in American...
Because of the plague known as the Great Depression, Herbert Hoover is often seen as one of
the worst presidents in American history. He enacted policies such as the Hawley Smoot Tariff
that flushed America deeper into the depression. Hoover didn t understand that to solve a crisis
such as a depression, he needed to interact directly with the people by using programs such as
social security and welfare. Instead, Hoover had the idea that if he were to let the depression run
its course, it would eventually end. There are three things that can be used to define Hoover s
presidency during the depression, his actions, his mentality toward fixing things, and the fact that
he helped pave the way for the New DealOne main cause of the... Show more content on

Herbert Hoover had a belief that self reliance and hard work in industry is what makes America
great, unfortunately for Herbert Hoover, this is exactly what got America into the Depression.
When Hoover enacted Hawley Smoot Tariff, he basically isolated the U.S. because no country
wanted to pay the high tariff rate. Since America was left alone to suffer, Hoover decided that it
would benefit the people if he enacted laws like the Federal Home Loan Bank Act. This act was
meant to lower mortgage rates and help farmers refinance their farms, but since the depression
was already in full swing, it was again too little too late. Herbert Hoover at one point fully
believed that if the depression was virtually left alone, it would fix itself because of the boom and
bust economy. This also didn t work, because without government help, the people didn t know
what to do with themselves and were left to suffer the depression by themselves. Hoover s attitude
was changing from optimistic to desperate because nothing that he tried seemed to work. It seems
as though Hoover was afraid of what he had done to America when a group of World War I
veterans, known as the Bonus Army, came marching in Washington looking for the bonuses they
were promised. The bonus wasn t due until the 1940 s, but with the uncertainty of the economy,
they wanted to get what they could, while

Get the dog out of the bag were the words that lead Mr Grieg, 61, to Brisbane Magistrates court

The horse trainer was tending to his horse at around 7pm on April 18 when police units and a dog
squad entered his stable, restricted his exit and began searching his belongings.
Police were searching the raceway under allegations that illegal substances, such as ice and cocaine,
where being used on horses in order to enhance their racing abilities.

Why Guns Are Bad
Firearms are not bad Guns have been around since the early 1400s, and we have improved on the
firearms. Firearms are used for many things it just depends on the person who is handling the
firearm. Firearms we used for war which I know it is not the brightest way to look at it. But if
you would look deeper it was to protect their home and kept their people safe. Present day, we
have improved on firearms now we can do many things with them just depends on the person, for
examples people kill people. Yes, I know we need to do something about the violence in schools,
there are many options we can, always have guards at school or have a teacher carry a concealed
carry. My thinking is that we need to fill out an application to see if we are mentally

1984 Literary Analysis
In every country, county and city, a government is intact to resolve each community s issues. It is
formed to further perfect each society to become a utopia for its citizens, but even within the
government itself, obstacles, such as the balance of the state s power, remain. This type of dilemma
is demonstrated throughout literature; one example can be recognized in George Orwells 1984.
George Orwell uses literary elements to express social issues of the dystopian society in 1984.
Many social issues involving social control from the governmentis expressed through the literary
element of symbolism. Different recurring symbols in 1984 by George Orwell include the
government figure Big Brother, Winston Smith s occupation, and Oceania s language... Show more

The country s language, Newspeak, also symbolizes a form of the social control issue. This
language is a digression from the original language Oldspeak, which is closely related to the
English language. Newspeak is a gradual regression of Oldspeak because the dictionary for
Newspeak is always being revised and shorten. Over time the citizens of Oceania gradually
develop a smaller range of vocabulary. Thoughtcrime is opposing the Party in any way or having
different beliefs from the Party, and this is a dilemma in Oceania. The only other way for the
Party to eliminate thoughtcrime is to narrow the range of thought...make thoughtcrime
impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever
be needed will be expressed in one word, and make other thoughts inexpressible (52). Therefore
there will not be a word to express a certain thought or feeling eliminating individuality and any
way for the people of Oceania to know any different. Soon there will be no expression to explicit
the strong feelings such as love or even hate. This is a very strong form of social control, but this
social issue is recognized by Winston

The Most Important Function Of Money
The most important function of money is that it serves as a medium of exchange. In a barter
economy it was difficult to exchange of goods since the exchange in a barter system required
double coincidence of wants. Money has removed this issue. Now goods can be sold between two
parties. Then the seller can use that moneyto buy goods they want from another party that have the
goods they want.
Another important function of money is that it serves as a common measure of value or a unit
of account. Under a barter economy there was no common measure of value in which the values
of different goods could be measured and compared with each other. Money has also resolved this
problem as well. Money serves as a way to measure the value of goods and services. As the value of
all goods and services is measured in a standard unit of money, their relative values can be easily
compared (Asmundson Oner, 2012).
Another function of money it that it serves as a standard for deferred payments. Deferred
payments mean those payments which are to be made in the future. If a loan is taken today, it
would be paid back after a period of time. The amount of loan is measured in terms of money and
it is paid back in money. A large number of credit transactions involving huge future payments are
made daily. Money performs this function of standard for deferred payments because its value
remains more or less stable. If the prices are falling, i.e., the value of money is rising, the creditors
will

Fifth Business Parent Child Relationship Quotes
The novel, Fifth Business, written by Robertson Davies includes various aspects of parent/child
relationships and the negative impacts they can have once an individual reaches adulthood. The
relationships that the three Deptford boys shared with their parents greatly impacted not only the
careers the three boys pursued, with Dunstan Ramsay becoming a hagiographer, Paul Dempster
becoming an illusionist, and Percy Staunton becoming a successful businessman, but also had an
impact on their spiritual individuation as well. As a child, Dunstan was raised by his stern Scottish
Presbyterian mother, which caused him to feel immense guilt throughout his life as well as repress
undesired emotions. An event that impacted his life greatly was Mary Dempster s... Show more

This is evident when Dunstan was not particularly distraught after he was informed of his parents
deaths after the war. As a child, Dunstan became quite fascinated by saints, an interest which
eventually lead to him becoming an avid hagiographer despite his Presbyterian upbringing. Upon
returning from the war, he had changed his name from Dunstable to Dunstan, an ode to St.
Dunstan, which contributed to Ramsay s individuation. Dunstan Ramsay further achieved
individuation with the help of Liselotte Vitzliputzli, who contributes to his psychological, spiritual,
and individual development. Dunstan had allowed his ego to overpower his shadow, which resulted
in him living as an overly cautious individual and not living life to its fullest. In his room in Mexico
City, Liesl confronted Dunstan with his true nature and forced him to understand himself. She used
Fifth Business as a metaphor for explaining Ramsay to himself, and it was not until this moment
that Dunstan carried this role out knowingly, such as when he revealed the secret of the snowball
and the keeping of the stone to Staunton and Eisengrim (Monk, 34 5). Towards the end of the
novel, it is clear that Dunstan reached individuation by stating, Dunstan Ramsay counselled against
revelation, but Fifth Business would not hear (Davies, 263), as well as Fifth Business insisted on
being heard again (Davies, 264). Both these quotations occurred when Dunstan Ramsay overcame
his ego and shadow, when acknowledging the secret of the snowball over fifty years after the
incident had taken place. It is important to acknowledge Dunstan s use of third person when
speaking. This indicates that although he acts as Fifth Business, he is still also his human self

Abstract Thermoset materials can be replaced by cross linkable thermoplastic materials meeting the
desirable properties of thermoset. The paper describes about the process parameters, cross linking
process and its advantages over thermoset processing.
Keywords Thermoset, Thermoplastic, mechanical properties, crosslinking agents I.Introduction
Thermosets are commodity as well as engineering plastics. They account for more than 70% of
the total plastics market share. Though they are easily processable and available at relatively low
cost, they involve cross linking process (curing) so as to become suitable for the application. There
are certain disadvantages associated with processing of thermoset category of plastics like high

C.Cross linking by SILANE
Amongst above 3, physical cross linking is discussed in detail below.
In this method, cross linking is obtained by free radical mechanism. The free radical is generated
in a polymer chain by using high energy radiations. The free radical is formed by breaking C H
bond and formation of C C bond amongst the monomers. Schematic of this can be represented as

Perception People perceive the same situation in their own ways. We learn from the flow of
information through our five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. However, each of us
receives, organises and interprets the received sensory information in an individual way using short

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Year Round Schooling
Daytona Duncan Professor Kluttz English 3 28 July 2017 The Advantages of the Year Round
Schooling Calendar The discussion of the year round schooling calendar versus the traditional
schooling calendar has been ongoing for some time. There have been many discussions and
debates about the advantages and disadvantages of both. The amount of school districts across the
United States that have switched to year round calendars has increased drastically. The year round
calendar provides students with more frequent breaks of 15 days at a time and a shorter chunk of

across the United States. The last major benefit from year round schooling calendars that I am

the year round schooling calendar, and I agree that student advantages and disadvantages should

Will they be on board with this? A lot of people may think that year round calendars can lead to

Seduction In The Hours And The Awakening
A shiny, crisp red fruit hangs enticingly off a lush verdant branch; a sly, seductive serpent and a
woman in the nude converse under the sacred tree, and then Eve tentatively reaches up and plucks
the juicy crimson fruit, a look of panic only reflected on her face once she realizes the gravity of
her decision. She picks the forbidden fruit and her ignorance is ripped away from her like a
newspaper on a windy day, and this single act started a trend of succumbing to temptations
throughout humanhistory. Even in the novels The Hours and The Awakening, the characters are
tempted by someone else or a different idea; however, some of these characters exhibit strong self
control and avoid their demise. The fine line between success and failure when it comes to avoiding
temptation is most obviously demonstrated by Edna Pontellier and LauraBrown, and these two
women showcase the destructive power of seductionand the strength of will it takes to deny the
enticement. The allure of the unknown is not exclusive to the female sex either, many men in the
novel also suffer from it, namely Robert Lebrun. The secret snare of temptation is interwoven
throughout the stories, and the sliver of thread can be glimpsed between the inky words. Many
different types of temptations exist in the world, but one of the most prevalent kinds is the
temptation of another human being. The ideal partner, the gold standard of lovers, is a temptation
not many can resist. There is some inherent part of the

Dwight D. Eisenhower s Fight Against Homosexuals
In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower became the 34th President of the Unite States. His main goal was
to keep pressure on the Soviet Union during the early stages of the Cold War. During his
Presidency, Eisenhower brought back many of the old traditional values and fiercely attacked
homosexuality and sexual immorality.
Born into a strong religious household, Eisenhower believed that sex offenders and homosexuals
posed a national security risk; therefore, they should not be allowed employment into any
Government positions. Eisenhower s administration claimed that because of their sexual
orientation, homosexuals were more susceptible to blackmail by a communist enemy. Because of
that, on April of 1953, Eisenhower issued Executive Order 10450 which revoked President
Truman s 1947 Executive Order 9835. In this new order, Eisenhower charged the heads of all

How Did Jacob Riis s Photography Influence Social Welfare...
Photographs for a cause
Through the late 1800s and the early 1900s, the division between financial classes was great.
Big businesses and monopolies ruled the market, making great financial powers such as J.P.
Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and more. On the other hand, middle to lower
class citizens struggled to pay their bills, lived in houses of fifteen people, worked in mine

captured by Jacob Riis. Jacob Riis was an American journalist most famously known for his

Trajectory of the internet Things
Since the beginning of time humans have created and made innovative products that push the

many of the technologies to improve our lives as well as our family s lives. Despite this the
problem that many companies are having today in selling their products is the consumer is asking:

Gender, Political, And Economic Equality Of The Sexes
In the words of the famous Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a feminist is a person
who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. I believe that though
some might argue that ever since women got the right to vote men and women have been equal, it
simply is not so and it is evident in so many different aspects, from a parent s desire to abort a fetus
when they learn the genderis female to the unequal pay in the U.S. working class between the
genders. In all societies men and women have different gender identities assigned to them from
birth which include, but are not limited to differences in dress and actions, social
responsibilities, and of course job roles. We live in a world where a man is ridiculed for taking
his wife s last name or in the case of my mother, the cost of choosing to hyphenate her last name
with my fathers is for her to be singled out and marked as a red flag by United States airport
security every time she travels. We are systematically ingrained to hold men and women to
different standards and roles which then expands into the workforce, creating inequality because in
the fight for the same role the men will eventually dominate over the women. Gender inequality in
the workplace is a very common, important social and economical issue that has been around for
many years and, at today s rate, will be around for the next one hundred years.
There are many dangers worldwide that a person might be exposed to, but

Spanish Financial Crisis
Spanish financial crisis
Introduction
(source: Wikipedia)
The 2008 2010 Spanish financial crisis is part of the world economic crisis of 2008. In Spain, the
crisis was generated by long term loans (commonly issued for 40 years), the building market crash
which included the bankruptcy of major companies, and a particularly severe increase in
unemployment, which rose to 13.9% in February 2009.
Spain continued the path of economic growth when the ruling party changed in 2004, keeping
robust GDP growth during the first term of prime minister JosГ© Luis RodrГguez Zapatero, even
though some fundamental problems in the Spanish economy were already self evident. Among
these, according to the Financial Times, there was Spain s huge trade deficit ... Show more content

every corner of the globe. In fact, there are quite a few analysts that believe if Spain defaults it
would ultimately lead to the breakup of the eurozone.
So will the EU step up and bail out Spain? Well, there are rumors that EU officials have begun
work on a bailout package for Spain which is likely to run into the hundreds of billions of dollars,
but on Monday the European Commission, the Spanish government and the German government
all denied that the European Union was preparing a bailout for the Spanish economy.

percent of working age Spaniards were unemployed during the first quarter of 2010. If people aren

How Does Shakespeare Present Macbeth In Act 7 Scene 7
The age of seven is a year full of beginnings. Children at this age start to continuously ask
questions spurred by curiosity. They lack self control and begin to worry more due to their
increase in knowledge. This is the age for them when they begin to understand the world around
them even though it may be difficult to process. Macbeth experiences these occurrences through
his time in Scotland. He constantly questions everything he hears, has increased worryness, and
is treated like a seven year by his older peers. As every other seven year, Macbeth is going
through this period of refinement which shows he s truly a seven year old. Reaching the age of
seven has led Macbeth to reach a milestone in his growth and that is of having curiosity... Show

Why Is Finitude Important In Malcolm X s Life
Human beings are not as perfect as we d like to believe. We are constrained by our abilities,
actions, knowledge, and death to live a life that can never reach its full potential. This concept of
finitude plays a significant role in Malcolm X s life and autobiography. X becomes aware of this
aspect of the human condition at a very early age and it seems that he acts with this idea almost
always in the back of his mind. Malcolm Xdoes not live a conservative or docile life. He is
determined to live his life to the fullest and by the end of the book, his only goal is to spread his
thoughts and ideas as much as he can before his time on this Earth is up.
We are first acquainted with finitude on the mere second page of this book. While we as
humans like to believe that we will live long and prosperous lives, Malcolm X seems to
understand the true nature of our existence before he is even able to go to grade school. With
constant threats from the KKK and several violent deaths of African Americans in the
community, it was near impossible for him to live as deluded as several of other did. His father had
also accepted the finite features of our existence and began to risk his life and dedicate himself to
civil rights. X realizes that he was likely to follow in his father s steps by stating It has always been
my belief that I, too, will die by violence. I have done all I can to be prepared (2)

1000 To 1750 Christianity Analysis
Between 1000 1750, Christianity maintained authority over the people due to religious and
political power, thereby greatly influencing art and education, however exposure to new knowledge
from the Islamic world led to changes in the way the church was perceived and depicted in Western
Europe.
At the beginning of the period during the Medieval Times, the Catholic Church had power and
influence over everyone s lives. The church built up its power over the years through superstition
and engraining in people s minds that the only way to heaven was through church. People believed
this because they were not exposed to any other formal education and anyone that spoke against the
church was subject to heretics. Toward the end of the period, after

Sex determination by amplification of Amelogenin gene from dental pulp tissue by PCR
Abstract
Introduction: Forensic odontology necessarily involves the application of dentistry along with
various other branches of sciences to resolve criminal cases with legal issues. Sex determination is
a part of forensic odontology and an en essential priority when traditional identification of the
deceased becomes impossible due to certain mishaps, including natural calamities, acts of war and
terrorism or criminal cases of homicide and mutilation of bodies.
Aim: To determine Sex by analysis of the Amelogenin gene using PCR method on DNAisolated
from dental pulp, which was exposed to various environmental conditions created artificially to
mimic a forensic scenario.
Materials and Method: This in vitro study was conducted by subjecting extracted teeth to various
conditions imitating a forensic scene, viz. desiccation at room temperatures, immersion in salt
water, burial in soil and even exposing to temperatures of 150 ВєC, 250 ВєC, 350 ВєC. DNA was
extracted from dental pulp tissue and sex determination was achieved by amplification of the
amelogenin gene through AMEL gene based primers in PCR.
Result: Among all the samples used in this study, DNA could be extracted from all, except from
those that were subjected to a temperature of 350 ВєC. DNA amplification and sex determination of
the samples were found to be accurate when compared to known data.
Conclusion: This study shows teeth to be

Literary Techniques And Devices In The Lottery By Shirley...
When writing, authors use various writing techniques and devices to better their story. From
onomatopoeia, and similes, to mood and setting, these devices are what make the stories we
read astounding. Atmosphere specifically is imperative to a great writing piece as it is
prevalent throughout the entire story. From the first three words to the last three words, the
reader is focused on the mood they are interpreting from the storyline. In The Lottery written by
Shirley Jackson, the mood is what makes the story so amazing and helps us understand the
theme. The story begins with a beautiful day and blossoming flowers. Which gives the reader a
sense of a light hearted childrens story. The morning of June 27th was clear and Sunny... The
flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. What do you think this
sounds like? Initially, it sounded like something I could read to my four year old sister. The
mood is very happy go lucky as the story continues. School was recently over for the summer,
and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them. While reading the story, I could relate to
the it as I love the summer and love being off from school. This story could have been in a regular
town precisely an older town as it was stated to only have 300 or so people, and they mentioned a
station wagon. The mood had been cheerful continuously until a little uncertainty appeared, when
all of the children started collecting rocks and making piles. Dickie...

Success Is The Highest Level Of Success
In our society, everyone has their own interpretations of success. The Oxford English Dictionary
defines success as the attainment of an object according to one s desire: now often with
particular reference to the attainment of wealth or position (Success). According to this
definition, one must be affluent or materialistic to be considered successful. However, one does
not need money to be considered successful in our society. Success is very subjective, so
everyone has their own definition of it. Someone who is very wealthy might consider their
fortune to be the highest level of success while someone who just received a promotion at work
might consider that to be the highest level of success. Money is only able to buy physical
objects which aren t considered an achievement. Ultimately, reaching a goal, having a
recognized career, and using the wealth for philanthropic work are good measures of success.
Everyone has a set of objectives for their personal or professional life and completion of these
goals is considered as being successful. Ever since my family moved to the United States, my
father s goal was to become an American citizen. After living here for over four years, he was
eligible to apply which he did. In order to achieve his goal of passing the citizenship test, my father

Europe Is Nothing Without Africa Not The Other Way Around
Europe is nothing without Africa not the other way around. By the early twentieth century most of
Africa, excluding Ethiopia and Liberia had been colonized by European powers. Earlier between
the 1870s and 1900 Africa faced many hardships from the Europeans such as imperialist
aggression, conciliatory pressure, invasions from the military, prospective journeys and

The Arrogance of Man in Stephen Crane’s Short Story, The...
The Arrogance of Man The Man vs Nature conflict is a common literary element used in
adventure stories and stories of survival. It is when the main character(s) of a story are in conflict
with an animal or a force of nature. In Stephen Crane s short story, The Open Boat, the man vs
nature conflict is present throughout the entire course of the story. The end of the story presented a
controversial topic left open for discussion; who was the victor of the conflict, manor nature? A
normal read though of the story would leave one with the impression that man was the winner of
the conflict. However, a close analytical reading of the text would actually suggest that it was nature
who was the true victor in the end. A close examination of certain aspects of the story such as the
scenes with the seagull and shark, the violent seas throughout the entirety of the story, and the
correspondent s thoughts at end will reveal the true victor being nature rather than man. First,
however, a short summary of the story itself is required for a full understanding of the analyses.
Stephen Cranes story The Open Boatstarts off with four strangers stranded in the middle of the

Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols in 1967 is an influential satire/comedy film about a recent

of an innocent and confused youth who is exploited, mis directed, seduced (literally and

power, or at least some sort of hierarchy that is evident, had had multiple disputes to whether or not
such a government was favored. Minoans and Mycenaean s often had problems with such
centralized powers, that it caused a focal discussion of whether or not a hierarchy of such should be
established. For both sides of the argument, there served multiple points of validity for and against a
centralized government, especially referring to shipping goods, the manufacturing and usage of the
goods, and the culture behind either one. With hierarchies often comes

Explain Two Ways To Classify The Structural And Functional...
There are two ways to classify the nervous system: structural and functional classifications.
Structural classification includes all the organs of the nervous system. There are two groups that
forms nervous system: central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). CNS
covers the brain and spinal cordof the human body. It unites and gives orders to the nervous system.
It translates incoming sensory information and gives directions based on past experiences and the
current environment. PNS covers parts of the nervous system outside the CNS. It includes the
cranial and spinal nerves which extends from the brainand spinal cord of the human body. Spinal

What Is The Political History Of Italy
Italy is a country that has gone through many changes throughout its history. It has faced many
obstacles but has remained nationalistic and eager for unification.
The political history of Italy is quite extensive. The Greeks were the first to settle in Italy and
established colonies in the southern part of the country and in Sicily. There was not a sense of
political reality as much as there was a civilization (Windows on Italy History). While the Greeks
controlled the south the Gauls, or Celtic people, ruled the north and the Po Valley. But the most
important group to settle in Italy was the Etruscans. Because of their advanced civilization, the
Etruscans were the only ones to establish political and cultural ideas before the ... Show more

Various parties were created and Italy joined the EU and North Atlantic Treaty Organization as well
as the United Nations. The new government stressed industrial growth and a higher standard of
living.
Like the United States, Italy s government is made up of three branches of government; Executive
branch, Legislative branch and Judicial branch. The government is highly centralized and is
adopted by twenty different regions. Five of these regions including Sardinia and Sicily, function
with autonomy statutes (U.S. Department of State). Under the constitution, each region has
limited governing powers. The Executive branch consists of similar players as the United States.
The President of Italy is known has the chief of state (U.S. Department of State). The President is
elected by an electoral college, which consists of both houses of Parliament and fifty eight
representatives from each region. The term for the Presidency lasts for seven years (CIA: World
Factbook). The next highest in command is the head of government or the Prime Minister. In Italy,
this position is referred to as President of the Council of Ministers (CIA: World Factbook). This
position is granted by the appointment of the President along with the permission of the Parliament.

Example Of Confirmation Bias
Confirmation Bias The confirmation bias is about us giving priority or being biased towards
information that affirms preceding and existing beliefs or experiences. Suppose that a person
believes that people who are left handed are more creative compared to right handed people. On
any occasion the person with this belief meets a person that is creative and also left handed they
regard this evidence quite important as it confirms their existing belief. They also might find proof
further to back up the belief and will disregard other examples which do not support the
fundamental belief. While confirmation biases have an influence on people collecting information
they also have an impact how information is being interpreted and... Show more content on

Necessarily, we have the tendency to believe that are successfulness are mainly because of our
inner characteristics and abilities. Although the failures experienced are a cause of the variables
which cannot be manipulated. In terms of how the Self Serving Bias operates in our day to day life,
if you get an A+ in an exam this bias will steer a belief within you which is that you prepared
well for the exam. At the same time by any chance if you failed the exam again it will make you
believe that the teacher did not do justice to this subject by teaching properly, the heat in the
classroom was terrible or you were disturbed by someone the night prior to the exam. This bias
occurs mainly for people to keep their self esteem in place. By the attribution of positive situations
to personal traits, the confidence in one is boosted. Also by casting the blame to the external
sources people secure their self esteem as well as deliver themselves from the individual control
they may have over a situation. There are also many factors that influence the Self Serving Bias

Racism In John Updike s Rabbit Run And Rabbit Redwell
John Updike has written many novels. One of his most famous series is called Rabbit Omnibus.
John Updike is known for his famous character in the Rabbit Omnibus books called Harry. John
Updike s books called Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux shows us racism, theme, and character change.
First, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see racism. In Rabbit Redux , it says, Now here s how.
You is a Big Black man sittin right there. You is chained to the chained to that chair. And I is
white as snow (296). This quote in the story shows how they like to play games involving
slavery. Racism is a big issue in both books. Readers can see this throughout the books with the
different characters. The quote is one character talking to the other. Another quote showing
racism in Rabbit Redux is I don t follow this racist rap, you can t turn on television now without
black face spitting at you (47). In the book several times we see Rabbit saying there are too many
blacks. The racism is not as bad in Rabbit Redux as in Rabbit Run . Between the two books, readers
can see different sides of John Updike s writing styles. In one book, he uses harsher words and
more racist words than the other book. Both of these books include elements of racism.
Second, in Rabbit Run and Rabbit Redux we see that the themes are kind of the same. The theme in
both novels involves them struggling with something in their life. In Rabbit Redux the theme is
Freedom. Rabbit wants freedom from his

Teaching Alternative Behavior
DeRosa, Roane, Doyle and McCarthy conducted a 2013 study on the use of alternative behaviors to
target different behaviors within the same response class. Swearing, talking out and yelling can all
be considered part of the same response class that are used as a method to gain attention from
others. Through the use of differential reinforcement, the students can be taught to produce more
appropriate methods of obtaining the desired responses. According to DeRosa, et al (2013), this
method of teaching alternative responding has been proven effective in decreasing the likelihood of
more severe behaviors from occurring. In this study, the alternative behaviorwas prompted by the
use of a visual cue, which was a red card being placed on the... Show more content on

Data is being sent to the BCBA at the end of the school day by his teacher on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, and on the same days by his parents after Joey has gone to bed for the
evening. The data is being collected by recording the antecedent, behavior and consequence
(ABC) for the occurrence of swearing. Swearing is operationally defined as the use of any form
of inappropriate language that is said out loud by Joey. A premade data sheet as been made and
distributed to his teacher and his parents. The data sheet was explained and allowed for the teacher
and parents to check the appropriate box that fit the situation. Each person was trained on how to
collect data, and the importance of being honest and accurate was discussed.
Intervention evaluation The reduction of the problem behavior will be monitored to see if there
is a decrease in swearing and an increase in the use of the replacement behavior. If there is a not a
noticeable change in behavior over the course of two weeks, then the procedure will be
reevaluated and the intervention will be altered. Possible alterations that could be made would be
for an additional cue to be provided on the prompt card that had the phrase on it that was to be

This helped to decrease infection, shorten recovery time, and increase mobility in the limb (Atkins 9). One of the first functional prosthetics was the Anglesea leg created by James Potts (Sellegren 23). He enacted policies such as the Hawley Smoot Tariff that flushed America deeper into the depression. Hoover didn t understand that to solve a crisis such as a depression, he needed to interact directly with the people by using programs such as social security and welfare. Instead, Hoover had the idea that if he were to let the depression run its course, it would eventually end. There are three things that can be used to define Hoover s presidency during the depression, his actions, his mentality toward fixing things, and the fact that he helped pave the way for the New DealOne main cause of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Herbert Hoover had a belief that self reliance and hard work in industry is what makes America great, unfortunately for Herbert Hoover, this is exactly what got America into the Depression. When Hoover enacted Hawley Smoot Tariff, he basically isolated the U.S. because no country wanted to pay the high tariff rate. Since America was left alone to suffer, Hoover decided that it would benefit the people if he enacted laws like the Federal Home Loan Bank Act. This act was meant to lower mortgage rates and help farmers refinance their farms, but since the depression was already in full swing, it was again too little too late. Herbert Hoover at one point fully believed that if the depression was virtually left alone, it would fix itself because of the boom and bust economy. This also didn t work, because without government help, the people didn t know what to do with themselves and were left to suffer the depression by themselves. Hoover s attitude was changing from optimistic to desperate because nothing that he tried seemed to work. It seems as though Hoover was afraid of what he had done to America when a group of World War I veterans, known as the Bonus Army, came marching in Washington looking for the bonuses they were promised. The bonus wasn t due until the 1940 s, but with the uncertainty of the economy, they wanted to get what they could, while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Most Important Function Of Money The most important function of money is that it serves as a medium of exchange. In a barter economy it was difficult to exchange of goods since the exchange in a barter system required double coincidence of wants. Money has removed this issue. Now goods can be sold between two parties. Then the seller can use that moneyto buy goods they want from another party that have the goods they want. Another important function of money is that it serves as a common measure of value or a unit of account. Under a barter economy there was no common measure of value in which the values of different goods could be measured and compared with each other. Money has also resolved this problem as well. Money serves as a way to measure the value of goods and services. As the value of all goods and services is measured in a standard unit of money, their relative values can be easily compared (Asmundson Oner, 2012). Another function of money it that it serves as a standard for deferred payments. Deferred payments mean those payments which are to be made in the future. If a loan is taken today, it would be paid back after a period of time. The amount of loan is measured in terms of money and it is paid back in money. A large number of credit transactions involving huge future payments are made daily. Money performs this function of standard for deferred payments because its value remains more or less stable. If the prices are falling, i.e., the value of money is rising, the creditors will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fifth Business Parent Child Relationship Quotes The novel, Fifth Business, written by Robertson Davies includes various aspects of parent/child relationships and the negative impacts they can have once an individual reaches adulthood. The relationships that the three Deptford boys shared with their parents greatly impacted not only the careers the three boys pursued, with Dunstan Ramsay becoming a hagiographer, Paul Dempster becoming an illusionist, and Percy Staunton becoming a successful businessman, but also had an impact on their spiritual individuation as well. This is evident when Dunstan was not particularly distraught after he was informed of his parents deaths after the war. Upon returning from the war, he had changed his name from Dunstable to Dunstan, an ode to St. Dunstan, which contributed to Ramsay s individuation. Dunstan Ramsay further achieved individuation with the help of Liselotte Vitzliputzli, who contributes to his psychological, spiritual, and individual development. Dunstan had allowed his ego to overpower his shadow, which resulted in him living as an overly cautious individual and not living life to its fullest. In his room in Mexico City, Liesl confronted Dunstan with his true nature and forced him to understand himself. She used Fifth Business as a metaphor for explaining Ramsay to himself, and it was not until this moment that Dunstan carried this role out knowingly, such as when he revealed the secret of the snowball and the keeping of the stone to Staunton and Eisengrim (Monk, 34 5). Towards the end of the novel, it is clear that Dunstan reached individuation by stating, Dunstan Ramsay counselled against revelation, but Fifth Business would not hear (Davies, 263), as well as Fifth Business insisted on being heard again (Davies, 264). Both these quotations occurred when Dunstan Ramsay overcame his ego and shadow, when acknowledging the secret of the snowball over fifty years after the incident had taken place. It is important to acknowledge Dunstan s use of third person when speaking. This indicates that although he acts as Fifth Business, he is still also his human self (Monk, ... The fine line between success and failure when it comes to avoiding temptation is most obviously demonstrated by Edna Pontellier and LauraBrown, and these two women showcase the destructive power of seductionand the strength of will it takes to deny the enticement. • 29. Why Is Finitude Important In Malcolm X s Life Human beings are not as perfect as we d like to believe. We are constrained by our abilities, actions, knowledge, and death to live a life that can never reach its full potential. This concept of finitude plays a significant role in Malcolm X s life and autobiography. X becomes aware of this aspect of the human condition at a very early age and it seems that he acts with this idea almost always in the back of his mind. Malcolm Xdoes not live a conservative or docile life. He is determined to live his life to the fullest and by the end of the book, his only goal is to spread his thoughts and ideas as much as he can before his time on this Earth is up. We are first acquainted with finitude on the mere second page of this book. While we as humans like to believe that we will live long and prosperous lives, Malcolm X seems to understand the true nature of our existence before he is even able to go to grade school. With constant threats from the KKK and several violent deaths of African Americans in the community, it was near impossible for him to live as deluded as several of other did. His father had also accepted the finite features of our existence and began to risk his life and dedicate himself to civil rights. X realizes that he was likely to follow in his father s steps by stating It has always been my belief that I, too, will die by violence. It is when the main character(s) of a story are in conflict with an animal or a force of nature. In Stephen Crane s short story, The Open Boat, the man vs nature conflict is present throughout the entire course of the story. The end of the story presented a controversial topic left open for discussion; who was the victor of the conflict, manor nature? A normal read though of the story would leave one with the impression that man was the winner of the conflict. However, a close analytical reading of the text would actually suggest that it was nature who was the true victor in the end. A close examination of certain aspects of the story such as the scenes with the seagull and shark, the violent seas throughout the entirety of the story, and the correspondent s thoughts at end will reveal the true victor being nature rather than man.
