Karma and Character Building

 1. 1. Karma and Character Building Roselmo Z. Doval Santos Manila Lodge
 2. 2. Karma and Dharma

The key to the spiritual life is the transmutation of karma into dharma.

---Dane Rudhyar

It is the ability to make the past a prelude to a noble future. ---Franklin Roosevelt The secret to transmutation is the flowering of a truly noble character.
 3. 3. The play between karma and dharma should be like a dance rather than a war.

We do not struggle against karma

in order to perform our dharma,

as much as the dancer does not struggle against gravity but uses it.

We do not struggle against karma in order to perform our dharma, as much as the dancer does not struggle against gravity but uses it.
 4. 4. Action exists in worlds beyond the physical.

Physical

Etheric

Astral

Mental

 5. 5. Mastery of Action

Mastery of action or the performance of dharma requires that we are the masters of our actions, emotions and thoughts

Mastery is required even if circumstances are adverse or “karma is unfavorable”.

The karmic environment contains all that our evolutionary education demands.

 6. 6. Character: Outer reflection of the soul

Character is the imprint of our soul.

This is an active projector of force into Nature.

Our seen and unseen constitution is a dynamo, ever radiating force and influence, constantly creating karma.

The character we have is a product of the past but is continually created by the present.

 7. 7. Working with the Law of Karma

Gravity will cause the sky diver to fall to the ground. How the diver falls is subject to the play of forces

Karma is the same way. The actions we create from moment to moment modify the universal karma, not only our own but the balance of Universal Karma itself.

Everything is related to everything else.

 8. 8. Do we build character or does character open like the flower blossom in early spring?
 9. 9. Man can be a master of the universe that is “karmically defined” for him

Man redefines this defined universe from moment to moment by his actions in the physical, astral and mental realms

This way he continually creates new karma that creates the future not just for himself alone but for the entire Cosmos.

 10. 10. Can we be masters of the present moment?

The perfect performance of dharma (duty or action) of the individual is a mysterious blend of both a choiceless awareness and an awareness of the choice made.

Choice resides in the movement of mind. When intuition flowers, the lower mind becomes quiet

When the consciousness of the disciple is trans-focalized to the Buddhic level at the level of the Arhat, that Truth becomes self-evident at each moment

It is not a mental process but a movement of life and intuition.

 11. 11. The art of life is the search for perfect action.

The action that arises is pure, without the tainting of desire and self, for in the buddhic awareness, all desire dies

The constant search for perfect action results in the imprint of the soul and the building of character

 12. 12. Yoga is skill in action, or perfect action.

Karma Yoga is finding the action of the Eternal in the non-eternal.

It is known by another term: Self Mastery or Self Culture.

The core idea is that we are not building something that is not there.

We are just becoming what we really are.

 13. 13. What is Man?

Man is highest Spirit and lowest matter joined together by Intelligence

This defines his destiny: Self-realization of the inner Divinity and Unity with the Cosmos.

The journey of the pilgrim-soul is governed by the Law of Karma or Universal Balance.

Action performed in the process of the blossoming of the soul is Dharma.
