Obesity analysis - Prevention Case Study

chikitsa on Sthaulya (Obesity).

2. Introduction
� Nowadays Lifestyle Disorders have taken a drastic rise since 2-3 yrs. A country with 300 million people
having an increasing habit of having Junk food, alcohol being a fashion, sedentary lifestyle due to work
from home and stress after covid-19 epidemic inturn leading to surge of Sthaulya(Obesity).
� China and India accounted for 15% of the world's obese population, with 46 million and 30 million obese
people.
� According to UNICEF's World Obesity Atlas for 2022, India is predicted to have more than 27 million
obese children, representing one in 10 children globally, by 2030
� .Obesity is defined as having a body-mass index(BMI) equal to, or greater than 30. BMI is a person's
weight (in kilograms) divided by their height (in meters) squared.
� In ayurveda, Obesity is termed Sthoulya or Medoroga under Santarpana Diseases.It is Medovaha Strotas
dushti disorder caused due to intake of Madhur and Snigdha Aahar. Increase of fat tissue production leads
to increase in weight. As per chikitsa siddhant 3 ways are used in Rx i.e. Nidaan parivarjan, Shaman,
Shodhan. With the help of this patient gets relief in his signs and symptoms.

4. Methodology
� An open clinical study of A female patient of age 52 with weight as 112 kg and height 165, was
taken under study.
� As per patients vitals and parikshanas patient was advised Udvartana i.e. application of powder of
Triphala + Musta + Sarshap + Yava mixed Honey/Curd/Water alternate days followed with bashpa
sweden, with warm water bath twice a day over the entire course.
� And then the patient was scheduled for lekhan basti in 21 days settings thrice.
� Cycle 1 - Day 1 - Day 7 - Pachan aushadis
� Day 8 - Matra Basti
� Day 9 - Matra Basti
� Day 10 - Day 30 - Lekhan Basti for 21 days.
� Day 31 - Day 37 - Only Shaman Aushadhi i.e Combination of trifala, shilajatu, guggulu
� This cycle was repeated thrice.

6. Result
� On the day of first consultation patient’s weight was 112 kg which got
reduced to 101 kg in 6 followups. The results showed that there was
reduction of 11 kg weight in 90 days plus a noticeable fat reduction.
� The Lipid profile was showed correction.
� Anthropometry showed reduction in circumference.
� The BMI was reduced from 41.1 to 37.1 after the entire shodhan and
shaman course.

7. Discussion
� With the help of trifala kwath gomutra yavak kshar madhu ushakadi gana the process
of lekhan takes place, the karshan of meda dhatu is done along with its anuloma from
the body. With the help of udgharshan churnas superficial fat burning occurs.
� Clinically patient presented with signs and symptoms such as increased body weight
(Sfik Sthan Udar lambanam), Fatigue and bilateral knee joint pain.
� Considering the santarpana samprapti the line of treatment mainly includes Lekhan
Basti, Udvartana, Shaman and lekhan tablet.
� Thus with Guru cha Apatarpanam principle results where seen and patient showed an
improved quality of living.
� Staulya karshye varam karshya, as obesity even may lead to death.Thus timely
intervention is must.

8. Conclusion -
� Based on signs and symptoms, Sthaulya the lifestyle disorder was
treated with the help of Sarvanga Udvartana, Bashpa svedan, Lekhan
Basti, Shaman Aushadi’s and certain dietary modifications resulting in
reduction of weight of the patient and improved quality of life of the
patient.
� Also the 8 mahadosh of atisthul where seen to be reduced.
