WOJEWÓDZTWO
ŚLĄSKIE
Katowice is a city in southern
Poland in Upper Silesia, the
capital of the Silesian
Voivodeship.
The population is 321
thousands people, and in
total 3 millions people live in
the agglomeration.
HISTORY
Katowice is currently the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship of
Poland. It is the center of the coal and metallurgical industries.
Together with thirteen other neighboring cities, Katowice
forms the Upper Silesian urban agglomeration with about
three million inhabitants and the highest population density in
Poland.
In 1937, a parachute tower 50 meters high was built in the city
for the training of young paratroopers. At that time and still this
parachute tower is the highest and the only operating object
of its kind.
There is a legend that in September 1939, after the Polish
army left Katowice, the tower was occupied by scouts - the
so-called pioneers, and when the Germans tried to take the
city, they fired at the enemy. Only with the help of artillery did
the Germans manage to destroy the children and take the
tower.
History
• This city is famous for its tin and silver
mines. Katowice used to be one of the main
industrial centers.
• After the war, the city became one of the main
cultural centers of Poland.
•
• The city has many museums, galleries,
attractions, which we will talk about next!

Upper Silesia - in addition to temporary exhibitions, the Silesian Museum
has 7 permanent exhibitions.
The museum's most valuable collections include works by the greatest
Polish artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Stanisław
Wyspianski, Jan Matejko, Józef Chelmonki, Artur Grottger and Jacek

but it is closed in winter.
SPODEK

Katowice, in the year of its
opening in 1971, was the largest

For years, the Spodek was a
place of great artistic and sports
events.
RYNEK W
KATOWICACH
Is the central square and landmark of
the Śródmieście district of the Polish

back to the end of the 19th century. The
square has been rebuilt several times,
and to this day it is undergoing some
changes.

A monumental monument a little far (500 meters)
from the center of Katowice. Located near the
center, next to the art gallery at the roundabout.
Erected in 1967 in memory of the uprisings of the
Poles against the German authorities in 1919-1921.
The three "wings" symbolize the 3 rebellions.
NIKISZOWIEC
This is an amazing place in its own way, because the atmosphere of England reigns here. It is
worth coming here at least for the sake of this area. A unique historic district built in the early
20th century for coal mine workers. The atmosphere is preserved, just wonderful streets.
Several famous Polish films were filmed on them.
LEGENDIA SILESIAN
