• Sosnowiec belongs to the group of most important towns of Upper Silesia
and is situated in its eastern part.
• Typically for the urban areas of the region, Sosnowiec is an industrial centre
with 4 mines and several factories; however, recently it has striven to develop
its trade and services. Sosnowiec is mostly visited for business purposes,
attracting people with its good location close to Katowice, Myslowice,
Dabrowa Gornicza, and other towns of the Silesian Industrial Area and its
proximity to the international airport in Pyrzowice (20 km).

Silesian Voivodeship, belongs to the Zagłębie
Zagłębie Dąbrowskie.
• It was granted municipal rights in 1902.
• It is headed by its president, Kazimierz Górski
• Its area is 91,06 km².
• The Black and White Przemsza rivers flow
through Sosnowiecand Brynica flow through
Sosnowiec.
• Right after Katowice and Częstochowa
Sosnowiecranks 3rd in terms of the number of

6. History
• Sosnowiec grew from several smaller settlements, some of them dating
back to the Middle Ages. The first mention of the town comes from the year
1727 when it was mentioned in the books of the Mysłowice church, which
described it as a milling and farming area. In the Middle Ages these lands
belonged to Silesian Dukes.
• The founding and development of Sosnowiec was directly connected with
the richness of the land, which helped industry to grow rapidly.
• It was annexed by Prussia in 1795 with the partitioning of Poland, but
after the Napoleonic Wars it became a part of Warsaw Duchy and then the
Polish Kingdom, a puppet state under Russian rule.
• The 19th century was a period that saw rapid industrialization of the area.
Development was speeded by the construction of the Vienna-Warsaw
railway, which passed through Sosnowiec.
• After World War II it belonged to Poland, and the 1920-30 period saw
intense development of the mining and steel industries
• During World War II most of the Jewish population of Sosnowiec (which
before the outbreak of war formed 22% of the whole population) found
death in the extermination camps.

7. Sports
• Sport MOS MKS Płomień From the first years of its existence
MKS Sosnowiec lead youth training in the sections of football
and basketball, and base the club is a Technical-Mechanical
Metallurgy, where he works and runs a physical education
teacher, co-founder of the club and its first secretary - John
Waletkowski. Over 50 years of the club is a period associated
with the life of three generations. During this period, our club is
the inspiration behind the development of physical culture and
sport among young people, and educator of many athletes and
officials.
• Czarni Sosnowiec KKS - Polish male and female football club
in Sosnowiec. Men's Group is currently playing in League IV.
Female group is currently playing in the Women's League.
• The main sports center in Sosnowiec is Zagłębie Sosnowiec,
the club has three sports teams: football, basketball and ice
hockey

TOURISM
• Almost 220,000 people live in Sosnowiec, which is predominantly an
economic centre that is developing successfully due to its Special
Economic Zone, but if you expect only to see grey blocks of flats and
factory chimneys then you may become confused. The neatly renovated
downtown includes some very interesting historical sights, such as
Sielecki Castle occupied by the Sosnowiec Centre of Art, the Schoen
Palace and Dietl Palace or the Orthodox church of Faith, Hope and Love.
• Among the several green areas in the town, the most recommendable
is the Leon Kruczkowski Park with its Exotarium, designed to show
everyone the diversity of flora and fauna from around the world. There
are about 80 species of plants while the animal section has fish, reptiles
and mammals.

14. Jan Kiepura
• Singer (tenor). Born on 16 May 1902 in Sosnowiec,
died on 15 August 1966 in Harrison, New York. In 1926,
Jan Kiepura left Poland for an international career in
Germany, Hungary, France, and England. When he
returned to Poland, with the money he had earned from
his performances, he built the well-known hotel Patria in
the Polish border town of Krynica-Zdrój, which cost him
about US$3 million

16. Wladyslaw Szpilman
• Wladyslaw Szpilman 5 December 1911 – 6 July 2000 was a
Polish pianist and classical composer of Jewish descent.
Szpilman is widely known as the central figure in the 2002
Roman Polanski film The Pianist, which was based on
Szpilman's autobiographical account of how he survived the
German occupation of Warsaw and the Holocaust.
• Szpilman studied piano at music academies in Berlin and
Warsaw. He became a popular performer on Polish radio and
in concert. Confined within the Warsaw ghetto after the
German invasion of Poland, Szpilman spent two years in
hiding. Towards the end of his concealment, he was helped
by a German officer who detested Nazi policies. After World
War II, Szpilman resumed his career on Polish radio.
Szpilman was also a prolific composer; his oeuvre included
hundreds of songs and many orchestral pieces.

• Market In Sosnowiec has its own facility, most retail
chains, with their share in common a number of retail
outlets. Among other things, Biedronka 12 shops, Żabka 9,
Plus 2, Lidl 3. The city has four major shopping centers:
Auchan with shopping mall, shopping center with a myriad
of Carrefour hypermarket, shopping center with
hypermarket Real Sosnowiec, Plaza Shopping Center, Fashion
House Outlet Centre and hypermarkets Castorama,
Decathlon, Leroy Merlin, Makro Cash and Carry. In early
2008, was opened a large exhibition center Expo Silesia
exhibition space with a target of 65 000 m2
