The French Revolution began as the French people rebelled against King Louis XVI after being inspired by the American Revolution. They stormed the Bastille prison and formed the National Assembly to take control of the government away from the monarchy. One of the Assembly's acts was proposing the use of the guillotine for executions as a more humane method than previous practices. The Assembly also published the Declaration of the Rights of Man to establish principles of liberty, equality and freedom.
