Richard Smith founded the town of Smithtown, New York in 1665 after rescuing a Native American chief's daughter. As a reward, the chief allowed Smith to claim as much land as he could circle on horseback in a day. Smith rode the chief's bull on the longest day of the year to maximize the amount of land acquired. Smithtown today is a middle to upper-middle class town with low crime, friendly residents, and effective police and fire departments located near schools. The town has several options for education, dining, shopping, and entertainment.
