Richard Smith founded the town of Smithtown, New York in 1665 after rescuing a Native American chief's daughter. As a reward, the chief allowed Smith to claim as much land as he could circle on horseback in a day. Smith rode the route on the longest day of the year to maximize the land acquired, approximating the boundaries of the current town. Smithtown is a middle to upper-middle class town with low crime, friendly residents, and effective police and fire departments near the local schools. The town has several restaurants, shops, a mall, and highly rated public schools.
