2. History of Smithtown Smithtown was first settled around 1665. Richard Smith rode a bull in a circle in one day, and the land that he encircled was now his own. The total area of the town is 111.4 square miles. About half of this area is water. There are 115,715 people, 38,487 households, and 31,482 families in the town.
