Purposive Communication
Binnor M.
Introduction
•Purposive Communication is a General Education
Course designed to increase the student’s knowledge,
skills and appreciation about the modern
communication concepts in various purposes and
settings.
LESSON 1
UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION AND ITS PROCESS
• Communication is a very important part of all living things. It is as old as our
civilization. The known form of primitive communication created by species
of men is cave paintings.
• According to Weekley (1967), the word communicate is derived from the
Latin word communicare which means “to share“ or “to make something
common.”
• Communication refers to the “process of meaningful interaction among
human beings [and it is where] meanings are perceived and understandings
are reached among human beings” (McFarland, 1994).
• It is also the “process of understanding and sharing meaning” (Pearson &
Nelson, 2000).
•Communication can be carried out verbally, that is, by
using words. However, it can also be exhibited in a
nonverbal way.
•Global communication is the process of interaction
through verbal and nonverbal messages in international
settings and contexts. Whether we like it or not, one
must learn how to communicate with other people on
the other side of the world because it helps to increase
business opportunities, remove cultural barriers and
develop a global village.
The two main goals of communication
• EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. It is when the receiver
interprets the message as you intended it to be interpreted.
• PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION. It is an intentional
communication that happens within the bounds of specific
contexts. It is therefore logical to explain purposive
communication as a communication applied in a specific
setting, environment, scene, social relations and culture.
Stages of the Communication Process
The eight stages of the communication process serve as an
integral function in the overall process. Breaking
communication down into its constituent steps and knowing
each component can help us improve the effectiveness of each
communication we originate. Thus, knowing and
understanding the eight-stage communication as shown in the
Shannon-Weaver Model can help us improve our
communication skills.
Julia T. Wood, one of the leading scholars in the
field of communication, enumerated four types of
noise in her book Interpersonal Communication:
Everyday Encounters that was published in 2016:
a.Physiological noise
b.Physical noise
c.Psychological noise
d.Semantic noise
Types of Communication
 Willkomm (2018) discussed the five types of
communication and McLean (2005) expounded on the sub-
types of verbal communication as follows:
1.Verbal Communication. It refers to any communication
wherein the message is transmitted through the sender’s
choice of words to share the message. Willkomm explained
that it can be face-to-face, over the telephone, via Google
Meet or Zoom, etc.
• McLean divided verbal communication into five
subcategories:
•Intrapersonal Communication. It refers to communication
with one’s self.
•Interpersonal Communication. Unlike Intrapersonal
Communication which involves one individual, interpersonal
communication involves two individuals and a face-to-face
conversation. It is the process of exchanging information,
ideas and feelings in a form of voice, facial expressions, tone
of voice, body language and gestures.
•Small Group Communication. “It refers to interactions
among three or more people who are connected through a
common purpose, mutual influence, and a shared identity.”
•Public Communication. It refers to an interaction between an
individual and a number of heterogeneous audience in a
public place. It usually occurs when there is an important
event or issue.
•2. Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal communication
refers to everything we communicate using our body
language. It includes facial expressions, posture, eye contact,
hand movements, and touch.
•Burgoon (1994, as cited in Zaynutdinov, n.d.) has identified
seven different nonverbal dimensions: (1) kinesics or body
movements including facial expressions and eye contact; (2)
vocalics or paralanguage that includes volume, rate, pitch,
and timbre; (3) personal appearance; (4) our physical
environment and the artifacts or objects that compose it; (5)
proxemics or personal space; (6) haptics or touch; and (7)
chronemics or time.
3. Written Communication. It is a formal medium of
communication that uses written symbols between
two or more persons.
4. Listening. “Active listening … is perhaps one
of the most important types of communication
because if we cannot listen to the person
sitting across from us, we cannot effectively
engage with them [sic]” (Willkomm, 2018).
Power (2020) gave five tips for effective listening:
•Feel
•Focus
•Wait
•Have an open mind
•Pay attention
•Visualizations. It involves the visual
representation of information, wherein the
message is understood or expressed
efficiently and effectively using visual aids.
Types of Communication
Communication Competence
• Communication competence is “the ability to interact well
with others” (Spitzberg, 1988, as cited in Tardy, 1988).
• Cooley and Roach (1984, as cited in Bostrom, 1984) defined
it as “the knowledge of effective and appropriate
communication patterns and the ability to use and adapt that
knowledge in various contexts.”
•They discussed its components as follows:
•1.) Knowledge
•2.) Ability to use
•3.) Ability to adapt
Communication in the New Normal
• Modern technology dominates our communication but
effective communication must be maintained despite the
changes that we are facing.
1. Remember that kindness and positivity improve
relationships, whether you are masked face to
unmasked face or you’re behind a computer in your
living room or not.
2. Practice mindfulness.
3. Overcome the physical barriers.
The Impact of Globalization on
Communication
•Globalization refers to the integration of the world-wide
interconnectedness in terms of ideas, practices,
economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by
exchange of goods, services, technology, flows of
investment, people, and information across the border.
• In 1990, English sociologist Anthony Giddens
described globalization as “the intensification of
worldwide social relations which link distant
localities in such a way that local happenings are
shaped by events occurring many miles away and
vice versa”.
•With the influence of globalization and cross-cultural
interaction, more language interactions happened
making communication more challenging.
•In the article The Impact of Globalization on
Communication Skills Development, Ingram (2018)
discussed the four impacts of globalization on
communication:
•Virtual Interaction
•Cultural Awareness in Speech
•Cultural Awareness in Body Language
•Time Differences
