Dr. Joseph M. Juran is widely regarded as the founding father of many of the key
quality management programs used by organizations today.
The son of an immigrant- seeking security when he went to work for the Bell System
in the years following World War I. He planned to spend his entire career at the Bell
System, but after four years on a leave of absence for government service, Juran
decided not to return to the company. He had begun career in research, lecturing,
philosophizing, consulting, and writing on management.
For a time, Juran was head of the Department of Industrial Engineering at New York
University (NYU). While there, he wrote and edited the Quality Control Handbook.
First published in 1951, the Handbook has grown from 15 chapters to 52, paralleling
and aiding the growth of the quality field.
During the late 1940s, Juran began to develop his influential course "Managing for
Quality," which has been taught in more than 40 countries. He also wrote for
Industrial Quality Control during the 1950s and 1960s. As a contributing author and
editor, Juran frequently emphasized the role of management in quality. He saw early
on the broadening role of quality and urged quality professionals to prepare for it.

meant to reduce the cost of
poor quality by planning
quality into the
product/process.

Quality by Design
A core principle of the quality planning stage is quality by design.
A business can ensure that its new product or service is built around
features that will satisfy customers by including quality planning into
the design process.
Dr. Juran developed universal approaches that resulted in advances
in Quality Improvement. These techniques were the forerunners to Six
Sigma.
Quality by Design is currently widely utilised in many industries,
including the automobile industry, and has recently been adopted by
the US pharmaceutical business under the FDA's auspices.
The FDA's Quality by Design effort, which is now an integral element
of pharmaceutical corporations' pre-market processes, aims to assist
the design of processes that maximise product efficacy and safety
while simultaneously improving manufacturability.

Quality Control Handbook

• First mathematically rooted textbook on product

function is.

DMAIC
• It is the Juran Quality Improvement
sequence
• Six sigma is achieved using the DMAIC
problem solving and improvement
methodology
• Its implementation is through projects of
different size and duration
Cost of Quality
Cost of quality refers to costs incurred while
ensuring that you get high-quality
deliverables. It also includes the cost of
dealing with any defects in your work. This is
different from the cost of production, which
refers to the total amount spent on labour and
materials.
Pareto Principle
• Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist who
observed that 80% of the effects come from
20% of the causes. Juran applied his
observations to business management and
economics.
• Juran emphasized that 80% of problems are
created by 20% of causes. Organizations
should identify the vital few (20%) causes and
take action to remove them from the system.
The Juran Institute
• In 1979, Juran founded The Juran Institute, whose
mission is to "Create a global community of practice to
empower organizations and people to push beyond
their limits."
• Programs designed by Juran are meant for everyone,
from students to professionals who want to excel in
Juran’s philosophy of quality.
• Initially, it focused on creating and distributing
videotaped lectures, “Juran on Quality improvement”.
• Nowadays, it is one of the leading quality management
consultancies in the world involved in producing books,
workbooks, videos and other materials.
Juran Legacy
• Dr. Juran remained active in the field of quality management well into his 80s
• Consulting for top-tier organizations worldwide, including Xerox, the US Navy,
Rolls-Royce Motors and Toyota. He retired at 90, but spent the following years
writing his memoirs, which were published just before his 99th birthday.
• Juran died in 2008 at the age of 103, but his work in the field of quality
improvement is being carried forward by Dr. Joseph A. DeFeo, Chairman and CEO
of Juran. With over 35 years of experience in training, coaching and consulting,
DeFeo’s highly regarded text, Juran’s Quality Handbook: The Complete Guide to
Performance Excellence is widely considered the go-to resource for those wishing
to study Dr. Juran’s quality management principles.
