Learning spaces need to encompass formal teaching spaces, informal learning spaces and virtual learning and teaching spaces. The combination of space, pedagogy and technology needs to be seamlessly integrated to support 21st Century learning. Learning spaces must utilise new technology and flexibility to enable active learning and meet student expectations and accommodate different teaching approaches. In this session, Professor Mike Keppell will reflect on different institutional approaches in addressing student learning by choreographing space, technology and pedagogy to achieve Institutional goals. Professor Keppell is an internationally respected academic and has held leadership roles across six universities. Two experts in the field of blended learning will share the importance of having a planned policy and support structure in place for any blended learning program to be successful. Greg Klein has been involved with Oakland Public Schools in the implementation of blended learning for many years and co-wrote the Oakland Unified case study where he identified critical success factors for blended learning adoption. Samantha Sherwood became a blended learning teacher several years ago and then helped open a blended learning school in New York Public Schools, where she now serves as the Assistant Principal. She researched the journey of a blended learning teacher as part of her Masters degree and has documented the characteristics and support systems needed for a successful blended learning teacher and a successful blended learning classroom. Pfau Long Architecture hosted a workshop at CAIS 2016 on learning commons. The workshop focused on how educators and designers are working toward a common goal of how to evolve a traditional study space for learning. The learning commons concept is becoming increasingly widespread for libraries at public and independent schools as well as colleges and universities. One of the drivers of adopting a learning commons approach is to mirror the real world by encouraging a more hands-on approach to research and problem solving.
