JulkICTLab is a service development environment for public sector organizations in Finland that provides several services free of charge to selected innovative development projects. These services include an OpenStack cloud computing environment for building digital service prototypes, technical consultants, project management tools, and support for the open product development lifecycle model. The goal is to help public organizations and partners experiment with and develop new digital services for government through an iterative design process.

Implementing INSPIRE services for Dutch provinces
IDgis, a small Dutch company, won the tender to implement INSPIRE services for the 12 independent provinces in the Netherlands. They developed an architecture that merges the provinces' data by harvesting their WFS services, transforming and loading the data into a centralized database. This database feeds national discovery and view services that provide harmonized, INSPIRE-compliant access to the provinces' environmental data. The implementation was organized with a central team managing the work of the provinces and IDgis developing ETL, deegree, and testing components. Knowledge and open source components were shared and can be reused by other organizations.

SpagoBI joined the FIWARE project in 2014 as Data Visualization component.
The FIWARE mission is “to build an open sustainable ecosystem around public, royalty-free and implementation-driven software platform standards that will ease the development of new Smart Applications in multiple sectors”.
Following this mission and thanks to this collaboration, SpagoBI was enriched with new capabilities that can be exploited in Smart Cities and IoT scenarios, in particular:
1. capability to explore and analyze data coming form CKAN (the well known Open Data portal)
2. NGSI standard adoption (both as producer and consumer of context data)
The presentation provides a short introduction to the FIWARE ecosystem, then it will go into more details on complex scenarios where the data visualization (SpagoBI and Knowage) is involved.

On May 3rd 2017, Engineering released the new version of SpagoBI, the OW2 flagship project on Business Intelligence. Starting from this version, the project is now branded as Knowage, and is available in two editions:
- the Community Edition, entirely open source, released and down-loadable from the OW2 forge, supported by the open source community
- the Entreprise Edition, fully supported by Engineering under a subscription model
Knowage suite is composed of several modules, each one conceived for a specific analytical domain. They can be used individually as a complete solution for a certain task, or combined with one another to ensure full coverage of users’ requirements, allowing to build a tailored product.
The presentation focus on the Community Edition and provides examples, demos and use cases on the most important functional evolutions of the product:
- the brand new and responsive user interface based on Angular.js
- the extended set of graphical widgets to perform advanced data visualization
- the self-service capabilities to perform data discovery
- the new web-based user interface to define the metadata layer by exploiting the data federation principle
- the possibility to define and import advanced analytic algorithms, written in R or Python, into a shared function catalog
Inno-W use-case
Welodias is an innovation management tool that collects ideas, feedback, and comments through a streamlined online process. It aims to enlarge expert networks across industries and connect to various knowledge sources. The tool demonstrates dashboards to view ideas and an evaluation process to select promising ideas. It allows powerful searching and engagement of customers to gather insights. The first release is ready for piloting and initial customers are providing positive feedback, though scaling up is a challenge.

Migrating towards Microservice Architectures: an Industrial Survey
2nd of May 2018. My presentation done at the 16th International Conference on Software Architecture (ICSA), Seattle, USA.
Microservices are gaining tremendous traction in industry and a growing scientific interest in academia. More and more companies are adopting this architectural style for modernizing their products and taking advantage of its promised benefits (e.g., agility, scalability). Unfortunately, the process of moving towards a microservice-based architecture is anything but easy, as there are plenty of challenges to address from both technical and organizational perspectives.
In this paper we report about an empirical study on migration practices towards the adoption of microservices in industry. Specifically, we designed and conducted a survey targeting practitioners involved in the process of migrating their applications and we collected information (by means of interviews and questionnaires) on (i) the performed activities, and (ii) the challenges faced during the migration. Our findings benefit both (i) researchers by highlighting future directions for industryrelevant problems and (ii) practitioners by providing a reference framework for their (future) migrations towards microservices.

Guiding Agile Solution Delivery with the ArchiMate Language
Solution Architects can develop clear and actionable guidance for Agile development teams using the ArchiMate language. They can rapidly leverage Enterprise Architectures, and specify just the right amount of detail to constrain the solution while leveraging developers' expertise, initiative and creativity. As solutions are developed, architectural models can be enriched with additional implementation details, enabling Solution Architects to contribute high-quality baseline architectures and reusable building blocks to their enterprise repositories. This presentation prepares Enterprise and Solution Architects to lead Agile implementation of their architectures and roadmaps.
Architecting Microservices

Microservice Architecture (MSA) has recently emerged as an architectural style particularly suitable to the cloud infrastructures. The MSA style is an approach to developing a single application as a suite of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms.
Although the set of MSA principles aim for high degree of flexibility, modularity and evolution, adopting, operating and maintaining microservice architectures in practice is challenging and time consuming.
This paper reports on a PhD research project addressing three different challenges concerning MSA: (i) the identification of the key properties of microservice architectures, (ii) the identification and investigation on a description language for designing and analyzing architectures, (iii) the identification of the factors that
impact the process of migrating existing applications towards MSA.
The first contribution of this project is a systematic mapping study on architecting microservices, which has been performed in order to understand the state of the research and the possible gaps in the area.

Microservice-based systems are characterised by a multitude of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms. The microservice architectural style strongly encourages high decoupling among
microservices in order to ease their independent deployment, operation, and maintenance. However, there are situations in which having a global overview of the system is fundamental.
In this paper we present the first prototype of our Architecture Recovery Tool for microservice-based systems called MicroART.
MicroART following Model-Driven Engineering principles, is able to generate models of the software architecture of a microservice-based system, that can be managed by software architects for multiple purposes.

Towards Recovering the Software Architecture of Microservice-based Systems
3rd of April 2017. My presentation done at the 1st International Workshop on Architecting with MicroServices, Co-located with the IEEE International Conference on Software Architecture (ICSA 2017), Gothenburg, Sweden.
Today the microservice architectural style is being adopted by many key technological players such as Netflix, Amazon, The Guardian. A microservice architecture is composed of a large set of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms (often via REST APIs).
If on one side having a large set of independently developed services helps in terms of developer productivity, scalability, maintainability, on the other side it is very difficult to have a clear understanding of the overall architecture of a microservice-based software system, specially when the deployment and operation of the involved microservices evolves at run-time.
In this paper we present MicroART, an architecture recovery approach for microservice-based systems. By using Model-Driven Engineering techniques, we leverage a suitably defined domain-specific language for representing the key aspects of the architecture of a microservice-based system and provide a toolchain for automatically extracting architecture models of the system. The only inputs of MicroART are: (i) a GitHub repository containing the source code of the system and (ii) a reference to the container engine managing it. We validated MicroART on a publicly available benchmark system, with promising results.

The document also describes a case study of using these technologies for public consultation during wind farm planning by allowing stakeholders to visualize proposed developments in an immersive way. From 2013-2014, the lab piloted several projects utilizing open source tools and open data to develop services around geospatial data, identity authentication, and an education cloud. Based on positive feedback, the lab's funding was extended through 2015 to further develop its common service development process, promote best practices and new methods, engage stakeholders, and broaden support for Finland's National Digital Service Architecture Programme.

The other parties involved may be, for example, companies, educational institutions, associations, or individual developers. • JulkICTLab is not a funding instrument, each project must have their own budget and funding organized Have you got an idea for a new digital service for public administration, or developing an existing one? Are you looking for somewhere to experiment with your idea quickly and flexibly? Do you want to share your creation with others?

Services • OpenStack cloud service environment, which enables development projects to construct the service development environment they require, in accordance with each project’s own timetable. • Technical expert consultants help with development infra, and case-by-case expert support includes consultation services relating to project content. • Developer and project management tools and guidelines to support R&D • The Open Product Management Model to support the design of new services, • Service design toolkit JulkICTLab is a service development environment that is seeking innovative development projects. Selected projects will be provided all the services free of charge.
