It covers: 1) China's period of disunity from 220-589 CE and subsequent rise to preeminence under the Sui and Tang dynasties from 589-1279 CE. 2) The influence of Chinese culture and rule on neighboring societies like Vietnam and Korea. 3) The emergence of Japan, including early Chinese influences giving way to a culturally distinct Heian period and the rise of warriors and warlords.
