JRuby allows Ruby code to run on the Java Virtual Machine. Warbler is a gem that can package JRuby or Rack applications into WAR files to deploy on Java application servers like Tomcat. The document demonstrates using Warbler to create a WAR file for a simple Sinatra app, then deploying it directly to Tomcat. Practical examples are also given of deploying Rails apps in Tomcat with filters and writing Ruby libraries deployed as JAR files.
A very popular talk I have given at conferences around the country on building virtualized development environments for PHP using VirtualBox, Vagrant, and Puppet
The API Contract is Dead, Long live the API Contract. Examining how to reduce the amount of work required to keep up with all this fast moving software ... in 20 slides, 15 seconds each.
The rise of virtualization has transformed the server business, but other than that it seems like the developer world has largely been left behind. Regardless of if you are working on one project, or have 20 clients, every developer should know how to use virtualization to create seamless and easy to manage development environments. In this talk we will take a practical approach to using a combination of Puppet, Vagrant, and VirtualBox to create entire development environments in a matter of moments - and even better re-use that template for any project you have in the future in a version-controlled and easily managed manner. Bringing on a new developer for your project? We'll show you how they can get a full-fledged development environment from zero to working in under 10 minutes.

This presentation gives an introduction and high level overview to web development with WebAssembly (WASM). At the time of this presentation WebAssembly had been recently released in all the major browsers for production. The presentation was given during a Chicago Ruby session for developers.
How to build a JAVA Project. What is JAR? And How to create a JAR file?
What is Version? Maven is a Powerful Build Management. Maven Architecture and Maven Environment Setup. Maven POM.xml and Build Life Cycle. How Maven Repository is utilized.
Learn what a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is and what it does for your Java applications in this webinar. Eva Andreasson of Azul Systems provides insights into the inner workings of a Java Virtual Machine and some drill down on what compilers and garbage collectors do, so that you don’t have to worry about it while programming your Java application. In particular, you will learn about common optimizations, well established garbage collection algorithms, and what the current biggest challenge with Java scalability is today.

This talk provides a number of step-by-step examples that illustrate different ways in which Rails applications can interact effectively with third-party Java libraries. The presentation shows how developers can leverage JRuby to augment Rails applications with the mature, third-party libraries that are widely available in the Java world.

Description of the Java platform (languages, runtime libraries, execution environments) and how to write cross platform portable Java code (mobile, desktop, server, iot, ...).
The new GraalVM from Oracle supports multiple language including JavaScript, Python, Ruby, R, C++ as well as Java and other JVM languages. This opens up interesting possibilities for polygot enterprise applications. Now you can use a Node library in a Java application or call an R statistical function from an EJB. Previously, this type of integration was extremely challenging. This session will provide recipes to get up and running along with best practices and some cool demos.

Electricity is a type of energy that consists of the movement of electrons between two points when there is a potential difference between them, making it possible to generate what is known as an electric current.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

2. What is JRuby?
• JRuby is an implementation of the Ruby language that
runs on the JVM (Java Virtual Machine)
• Runs Ruby code just like MRI/cruby, works with familiar
tooling such as Rubygems, Bundler, etc.
• JRuby 9K is the upcoming version of JRuby which is
compatible with Ruby version 2.2
• JRuby 1.7.x is the current version of JRuby which is
compatible with Ruby version 1.8.x and 1.9.x
3. Why?
Technical
• Runs anywhere Java does
• Mature ecosystem with many libraries
• Threading
• Performance of the JVM
Environmental/Political
• Perhaps you work in a ‘Java Only’ shop but want to introduce JRuby
• You need to integrate with or use legacy code that cannot be
rewritten in another language
4. Many Options
• Trinidad - Tomcat based server
• Puma - Inspired by Mongrel
• Phusion Passenger - Deploy behind Apache or nginx
• Cloud - Heroku, Engine Yard, et al.
• And plenty of others
5. Another Option
WAR file based deployment
• A WAR file (Web application ARchive) is a specialized
JAR file for deploying apps in a Java EE container
• If we can create a WAR file for our JRuby webapp we
can deploy it in any number of Java EE containers.
• Tomcat
• JBoss
• Websphere
• etc.
6. Enter Warbler
https://github.com/jruby/warbler
• Warbler is a Gem that can create a JAR or WAR for any
JRuby or Rack based application
• Create a JAR for standalone or command line utilities
• Run them with java -jar application.jar
• Create a WAR for Rack based webs
• Deploy the WAR file in an appropriate container (such as
Tomcat)
7. Demo
• We have a simple Sinatra app that will generate a
PowerPoint slideshow using JRuby and Java JARs
• Build a WAR file using Warbler
• Deploy the WAR file directly in Tomcat
8. Practical Examples
• Deploy a Rails app in Tomcat and use specialized
servlet filters to do things like SSO
• Use Tomcat to manage a large number of application
deployments
• Write Ruby applications - for example doing text
processing - that are deployed as JAR files in a larger
application
