Before the 1970s, Brazilian agriculture was characterized by low production and yields, rural poverty, and a lack of agricultural knowledge and support institutions. To address these issues, Brazil set the task of transforming its traditional agriculture into a more scientific and technological sector. This involved expanding production into new areas like the Cerrado, implementing supportive government policies, developing tropical agricultural technologies, and empowering small- and medium-sized farmers. As a result, by the 2000s Brazil had greatly increased its agricultural production and exports, becoming a global leader in key commodities like soybeans, sugar, beef, and poultry. Renewable energy from sugarcane also grew substantially.

This presentation by Erik C.M. Fernandes was given at a session titled "Knowledge products and tools for sustainable landscape management in a post-2015 development agenda" at the Global Landscapes Forum in Lima, Peru, on December 6, 2014.
The forum discussed the role of knowledge products and tools and how they are used by relevant stakeholders in achieving a more sustainable management of forests and forest resources at the landscape scale and within the framework of the post-2015 agenda.
The Indian economy at the time of independence in 1947 was stagnant and backward. Agriculture was the primary occupation but it was unproductive and relied on subsistence farming. The zamindari system of land tenure exploited farmers and reduced many to landless laborers. Infrastructure like roads, ports and railways was poorly developed. Industrialization was negligible and the handicrafts sector had declined. Demographic indicators like life expectancy and literacy rates were very low due to low standards of living under British rule. Overall, India faced significant economic challenges after independence.

This document summarizes findings from a study on farmland loss and farm operations in Dane County, Wisconsin between 1980-2030. It analyzes changes in agricultural land use over time, amount of farmland lost to development, and projections for future land needs. Major findings include that 95,000 acres of crop and pasture land were converted between 1980-2000, with 37,000 acres lost to development. An additional 10,000 acres of prime farmland were developed between 2000-2005. The document also examines the diversity of agricultural lands, operations, and economic productivity in the county as well as ecological services provided by farmland.
This document provides an overview of the business potential for Brazil to increase pulses production for the Indian market. It notes that India has a large and growing population with increasing water scarcity issues, making it reliant on pulses imports as a crucial source of vegetal protein. Brazil is well-positioned to meet this demand due to its favorable growing conditions, large arable land, and status as a major agricultural exporter following investments in productivity. The document examines trends in Brazil's agricultural trade surplus and outlines why increased pulses production could be an important strategic opportunity.
This document provides an overview of opportunities for wood pellet and chip production and export from Brazil. It discusses the global pellet market and supply trends. Brazil is well-positioned for biomass exports due to its large renewable resources including water, arable land, sunlight, and advanced agricultural science. The country has high forest productivity and is one of the world's most competitive suppliers of wood pellets. Brazil's pellet exports have grown significantly in recent years. The document analyzes production and trade data and forecasts further increases in global pellet demand, positioning Brazil well for future market expansion.
This document proposes a contract farming model to boost agricultural productivity in India. It notes that while agriculture employs 70% of the workforce, it only contributes 13% to GDP. Small and marginal farmers operate on just 40% of cultivable land. The proposal involves the government giving contracts to identified individuals to farm specific plots of land. These contractors would receive funding, technology, and inputs to increase productivity. The model aims to formalize agriculture, increase incomes, employment and government revenues. It proposes monitoring the system through state and district level officers overseeing contractors responsible for 250 square km areas. Challenges around contractor incentives and integrating the new system are addressed. Overall the contract farming approach intends to raise productivity and prosperity in Indian agriculture.
Brazil is one of the top three countries in terms of GDP, population, and land area. It has abundant natural resources like water, sunlight, and fertile land that make it highly productive for agriculture, especially forestry. Brazil is the largest exporter of cellulose in the world due to its low production costs and high yields of eucalyptus. A new potential region for eucalyptus and pulp production is Amapá state, which has large areas of underutilized cerrado savannah lands that are cheap, close to port infrastructure, and could support expansion of the industry.

This document discusses Brazil's national climate change policy and targets for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. It outlines the evolution of Brazil's emissions reduction targets, established in Decree 7.390/2010. The decree sets targets of reducing emissions 36.1-38.9% below projected 2020 levels through sectoral plans focused on deforestation, energy, agriculture, and industry. Progress has been made in reducing deforestation in the Amazon which accounts for 67% of projected reductions. The document also discusses strategies for monitoring and evaluating emissions inventories and sectoral progress.
The document discusses several key points about US agriculture and the federal Farm Bill:
1. Over half of total US land is used for agriculture, while urban land use is just 2.5%. Farm policy impacts the environment, as evidenced by large hypoxic zones in the Gulf of Mexico.
2. The federal Farm Bill governs US agricultural policy. It is divided into 15 titles covering topics like commodity programs, conservation, trade, nutrition programs, and rural development. The 2008 Farm Bill spent $35 billion on commodity programs and $25 billion on conservation.
3. Conservation programs in the Farm Bill aim to reduce soil erosion, protect water quality, and preserve wetlands. Participation in these programs provides environmental

12. Points to Watch in the 10/11 Season
La Niña. Planting in Mato Grosso delayed for 3 weeks at least. This
could effect 2nd crop yields and also transportation costs. Concern for
drought later in the season in the south of the country (RS), where
weather yields have been good for last two years.
Weather Risk
Around 56% of Brazils corn will be GM this season only in the third
season after approval and 75% of RR soybeans. Corn has 9 GM events
with approved cultivars, while soybeans so far only have RR, even
though there are 5 events approved, including the recently BTRR2
GM Technology
New interpretation of an old law (Lei n° 5.709/71) is creating uncertainty in
the market. This interpretation states that brazilian companies with foreign
ownership should be treated as foreign co.

Foreign Ownership of
Land
The 20 largest producers in Mato Grosso planted 3 million acres (up
