Editor's Notes
Hello and welcome! Today’s video will focus on journals, magazines, and trade publications: what they are and how to find them in the library.
We will begin by defining a periodical. Then we will learn more about journals, magazines, and trade publications, including what they are, some examples, and where to find them in the library.
Part 1: Definitions. What are Periodicals?
Journals, magazines, and trade publications are all examples of periodicals.
What is a periodical? A periodical is a publication that comes out with a new issue at regular intervals (weekly, monthly, or quarterly).
Part 2: Journals. What is a journal? What is published in them? Why do you use them? Where are they found?
What is a journal? A journal is a publication that is written by scholars for other scholars to read. Because of this, they make a lot of assumptions of their reader that they already know a lot about the topic.
Journals are often referred to as scholarly journals and are examples of scholarly sources. Journals go through the peer-review process, which means their articles are reviewed by other experts in the field before publication.
What is published in journals? Scholarly articles are published in journals. Journals can be specific to a small section of a subject area, which means their articles can also be very specific to a subject area.
Why do you use journals? Journals are great, authoritative sources, because they are written by experts. Experts know a lot about the subject they’re writing about. They will usually have a Ph.D. in that subject area.
Where are journals found?
Journals are mostly found online, but the library does have some journals available in print.
Online journals are searchable in library databases, such as Academic Search Premier or Gale Power Search. Sometimes you can find journals on Google, but you will not always be able to read the articles. This is because journals cost money to read and if you find a journal on Google, you will be asked to pay money to read an article. This is why you should always use library databases when looking for journals. The library has already paid for you to have access to many different journals, so you will be able to read journals for free.
Some examples of journals include Intensive and Critical Care Nursing, American Biology Teacher, International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, and Advances in Mechanical Engineering.
Part 3: Magazines. What is a magazine? What’s published in them? Why do you use them? Where are they found?
What is a magazine? A magazine is a publication geared toward a specific subject, but is written for the general public instead of experts on a subject matter.
What is published in a magazine? Magazines can be very specific in their subject matter, just like journals. However, they are written for a general audience who are not experts on the subject matter.
Magazines are usually written by journalists instead of experts in the field.
Why do you use magazines? Since magazine articles are usually written by journalists and not experts in the field, they are not as authoritative as journals. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use them! Magazines can be great to use for background research to learn more about a topic, because they are written in an accessible way.
Where can you find magazines? Magazines can be found in print at the SCC Library or online. You can even find some magazines when searching in library databases, just like you can with journals.
