Face Proportions & Expressions Journal Assignment
                              Class___________________________

Objectives: Make 2 journal pages – 1 that focuses on drawing the face
proportionally and the 2nd that uses face proportions to make a face with
expressions. For the expressions, page you will use color and black line to
                        enhance the expression.

                        Page 1 – Proportions
                        Materials: Journal, pencils and eraser
                             1. Head – Draw a perfect circle larger than
your palm. Now extend the circle in an
elongated oval shape. The half-oval will
be the chin and is about half of the
                                circle.
                             2. Divide the face – Draw a vertical line
down the middle, and two horizontal lines that divides the face
       into thirds.
   3. Nose line – Draw the bottom of the nose on the second
       horizontal line.
   4. Corners of the eyes – from the sides of your nose, draw two vertical lines up to the first horizontal
line. Begin drawing your eyes from the vertical lines out.
   5. Mouth – Once you have your eyes drawn, draw two vertical lines from the pupils down the face.
This will be the width of your mouth – yes, it really is this large.
   6. Line between the lips – is about ½ between the
bottom of the nose and bottom of the chin.
   7. Ears – Draw two horizontal lines from the
corners of your eyes and two horizontal lines
from the bottom of your nose.
   8. Chin – Now look at your chin and redraw the
line more like your own chin. Is it rounded, or
       square?
   9. Neck – Complete the neck with soft lines from
       under the chin.
   10. Hair – is always last. Draw lines in the direction
       your hair grows.
Page 2 – Expressions
Materials – Journal, pencils & eraser, black
marker, watercolor, colored pencils

   1. Draw your face in proportion. Use the setup
      from the first journal page.
   2. Divide the face into correct proportion lines.
   3. Next find an expression you want to make on
your face from the cartooning expression
chart. Instead of drawing a cartoon, use your
proportions to place the expressions onto your
face. Use the expressions below, but make it
      look like you. Tricky!
   4. Outline in black marker.
   5. Use color to make the page more expressive. If you choose an angry face – then use red in the
color scheme to enhance the expression.
   6. Make a complete page – include a background. Be creative.
