past

1The past…
20%
of the population
1. For whom? People with disabilities
2. You do it because:
Someone told you that you have to (avoiding losing)
3. How you do it: Compliance with guidelines
4. How you actually do it:
You get it wrong, then fix it when someone complains
5. New technologies: accessibility always lags behind,
so they’re just a challenge and frustration
6. Difference: is an overhead & annoyance
ARE AN OVERHEAD.
MAYBE A ONE-OFF DESIGN, IF
WE HAVE TO?
7. You expect to get back:
Nothing, except a better night’s sleep
Image of a person sleeping soundly
8. So who’s interested?
Very few want to know about ‘accessibility’
Image of the
present
here
2The
present…
1. For whom? Everyone, when we need it
When we’re stressed, in a rush, or even drunk… When we can’t hear the sound…
In bright sunlight… When we shouldn’t watch a screen…
2. You do it because:
It’s expected, if you want to follow best-practice
3. How you do it:
Guidelines and a bit of user-testing
4. How you actually do it:
You get it right when you really concentrate on it;
but sometimes the tech supporting you lets you down
5. New technologies:
Now confident that accessibility is part of new techs
6. Difference
6. Difference: is embraced...
MATTER…
(SOME OF THEM)
when it’s convenient (“design for all”)
7. You expect to get back:
An award? (if they give those out any more?)
8. So who’s interested?
Just the #a11y guys. Will calling it inclusive design help?
3The future…
1. For whom?
For everyone, all the time – it’s all just personalisation
2. You do it because:
You want to win. Missing this may get you left behind
3. How you do it:
User-research, co-design, A-B testing
4. How you actually do it:
You do the simple BAU stuff without even thinking.
The innovative stuff is where you spend your time
5. New technologies:
expectation is that new techs open up opportunities
6. Difference:
6. Difference:
6. Difference:
is normal (“design for me”)
ARE ALL OF US
7. You expect to get back:
A lead in the innovation race, or to keep you there
Image: being in the lead
(or being there first)
- could be metaphorical (100m finish)
8. So who’s interested?
Accessibility and inclusive become accepted ‘good’ design and
who wouldn’t be interested in innovation?
The possibilities are endless…
So where’s your organisation at on the journey…?
for your questions
jonathan@openinclusion.com
Best question/contribution wins a copy of my book…
• what disabled people need is accessibility
• accessibility and inclusive design are anti-creative
• disabled people use assistive technologies
• the most important accessibility requirement
for images is alt-text
• the most important people in accessibility
are developers
• if you build it (to be accessible)
then they will come…
