Practical Test Automation Deep Dive
In this talk I'm going to focus on the technical aspects of 'test automation', using examples of approaches from a variety of Agile projects where we automated APIs, and GUIs. You'll learn about the use of abstractions and how to think about modeling the system in code to support automating it. Also how to use these abstractions to support stress testing, exploratory testing, ongoing CI assertions and the testing process in general. In this talk Alan will explain how to ‘misuse’ the ‘automation’ tools you’ve heard so much about, because you need to get things done. You’ve no doubt heard that ‘Cucumber is not a test tool’, and you’ve no doubt noticed that people use Cucumber during their testing. It’s misuse cases like this that we will celebrate, and as a bonus, you’ll learn what Cucumber ‘really' is. We’ll look at other tools; to find out their true nature and how you can turn it to your personal advantage. To further groom you for success, we’ll explain the mental models which give you guilt free flexibility in your approach. If you’ve ever wanted an ‘expert’ to quote to give you permission to use the tools how you want, this is the talk for you.
I'm going to be talking about finding the 'essence' of the tool, rather than what everyone 'says' about it, and that can lead to a radical overhaul in your beliefs and usage of the specific tool.

Why is it that everyone knows the importance of frequent user
testing, yet hardly anyone does it? Because user testing often is time
consuming, complex and expensive. It probably doesn’t fit in your
development process and thus feels like extra work.
To feel reassured you tell yourself to test with users once you have
something working, or at the very end of the process. This is strange,
because everybody knows that changing your product late in the
process will increase costs exponentially.
We created a way so that user testing saves time, improves the
quality and doesn’t cost a lot of money. Team driven, pragmatic and
no extra resources needed.
The talk will show how, with only 2 hours every sprint, we focused on
creating better products faster. We would love to share our learnings
and simple DIY tools that let you start user testing with your current

Who is responsible for innovation? People with a word “Innovation” in their job title, like Innovation managers in Innovation Hubs? Certainly, these people can be innovation catalysts.
Still the vast potential of very intelligent, creative, and educated people, who could contribute to the company’s innovations on an everyday basis, stays mostly unused. Usually, these people have a Software Engineer job title.
Over the last two decades agile way of working became prevailing within many cross-functional teams in the software development industry. However, most of those teams can be called cross-functional just so far, as what they are mostly doing is just transforming a set of requirements received from outside, usually from stakeholders, into working software.
In more progressive companies the decision-making regarding product has moved from stakeholders to product managers and eventually it is moving to the whole cross-functional teams, still such mindset shift is not that common.
During this session we will explore what are the benefits of placing product discovery inside the cross-functional team using the great potential of all its members, discuss how to encourage Software Engineers to participate in Product Discovery and learn practical tools how to start embracing the whole team innovation mindset.

“TX to prevent “shelfware”: Understanding the tester’s experience of automation and tools” (75 mins)
There is a taken-for-granted assumption in the testing industry that many software testing tools become “shelfware” (that is, they are purchased but not used) because they are hard to implement and use. If there is a problem with shelfware, this raises questions, for example: Is this because the tools are flawed, and don’t give the testers the support and information they need? Or is it because the testers need to become more technical and “step up” to the requirements of the tools?
These questions matter because testing, and the automation of test activities, is time consuming, difficult to do, and expensive, but heavily relied on by teams and organisations. Maybe, if the User eXpereince (UX) for tools was improved this could help with the implementation and usage of the tools. Perhaps we should consider not just the functional and technical aspects of the product but also emotional responses including trust and credibility, making a product meaningful and pleasant to use, and measures of the efficiency and effectiveness with which people can carry out their tasks.
Good automation tools should help us make good decisions about the SUT and maximise the value of the limited time we have, to deliver software products to market. Poor automation tools may delay decision making, increase the likelihood of errors of judgement, and frustrate both engineers and managers.
Once activities have been automated and industrialised, people are still required to operate the automation, or even over-ride it if it malfunctions. Some evidence (for example quoted in “The Glass Cage” by Nicholas Carr) suggests that people may become over-reliant and over-trusting of automation and not notice when it goes wrong. What then is the best UX for test tools? One that provides as easy an experience for the tester as possible, or one that maximises their decision making and alertness? And, can both those qualities be delivered in one interface?
The talk draws on Isabel’s practical experience in industry, as well as research and study with Julian Harty, Stuart Reid, Dorothy Graham, Nadine Raes and others. Isabel is embarking on a PhD study to research this matter in more depth. Isabel hopes to provoke feedback and discussion during the presentation.

There's a paradigm shift that follows the use of the Experience API. The shift comes from seeking insights on how effective our designed experiences are versus judgments about how well people learn from them. This change in mindset focuses on the outcomes from the audience that manifest in observable ways, mapped directly to our design assertions. Who is responsible for innovation? People with a word “Innovation” in their job title, like Innovation managers in Innovation Hubs? Certainly, these people can be innovation catalysts.
Still the vast potential of very intelligent, creative, and educated people, who could contribute to the company’s innovations on an everyday basis, stays mostly unused. Usually, these people have a Software Engineer job title.
Over the last two decades agile way of working became prevailing within many cross-functional teams in the software development industry. However, most of those teams can be called cross-functional just so far, as what they are mostly doing is just transforming a set of requirements received from outside, usually from stakeholders, into working software.
In more progressive companies the decision-making regarding product has moved from stakeholders to product managers and eventually it is moving to the whole cross-functional teams, still such mindset shift is not that common.
During this session we will explore what are the benefits of placing product discovery inside the cross-functional team using the great potential of all its members, discuss how to encourage Software Engineers to participate in Product Discovery and learn practical tools how to start embracing the whole team innovation mindset.

“TX to prevent “shelfware”: Understanding the tester’s experience of automation and tools” (75 mins)
There is a taken-for-granted assumption in the testing industry that many software testing tools become “shelfware” (that is, they are purchased but not used) because they are hard to implement and use. If there is a problem with shelfware, this raises questions, for example: Is this because the tools are flawed, and don’t give the testers the support and information they need? Or is it because the testers need to become more technical and “step up” to the requirements of the tools?
These questions matter because testing, and the automation of test activities, is time consuming, difficult to do, and expensive, but heavily relied on by teams and organisations. Maybe, if the User eXpereince (UX) for tools was improved this could help with the implementation and usage of the tools. Perhaps we should consider not just the functional and technical aspects of the product but also emotional responses including trust and credibility, making a product meaningful and pleasant to use, and measures of the efficiency and effectiveness with which people can carry out their tasks.
Good automation tools should help us make good decisions about the SUT and maximise the value of the limited time we have, to deliver software products to market. Poor automation tools may delay decision making, increase the likelihood of errors of judgement, and frustrate both engineers and managers.
Once activities have been automated and industrialised, people are still required to operate the automation, or even over-ride it if it malfunctions. Some evidence (for example quoted in “The Glass Cage” by Nicholas Carr) suggests that people may become over-reliant and over-trusting of automation and not notice when it goes wrong. What then is the best UX for test tools? One that provides as easy an experience for the tester as possible, or one that maximises their decision making and alertness? And, can both those qualities be delivered in one interface?
The talk draws on Isabel’s practical experience in industry, as well as research and study with Julian Harty, Stuart Reid, Dorothy Graham, Nadine Raes and others. Isabel is embarking on a PhD study to research this matter in more depth. Isabel hopes to provoke feedback and discussion during the presentation.

The Digital Transformation is real. Software development teams can deliver if they adopt the disciplines of Continuous Delivery, DevOps and in-production experimentation. The barrier to achieving success in the software delivery process is likely to be the inability of testers to align testing and automated testing in particular to the development processes. Our track record in test automation is not good enough. In order to succeed a new way of thinking about testing is required, and the New Model of Testing offers a way of identifying the elements of the test process that must be ‘shifted left’. This does not necessarily mean testers move, but rather that the thinking processes must move.
During this lecture, Paul has shown that it is possible that users, BAs, and developers take some responsibility in this area. The New Model applies to all testing, whether performed in development, integration, system or user testing, by people or tools.

Much of the automating we do to support testing involves detecting change. Once our tests pass, they fail when the system changes and the automated execution alerts us to the change. There are other ways that automating can help us.
Automating Tactically vs Strategically SauceCon 2020
One of the biggest concepts that has made a difference to my programming and automating in recent years is the concept of “Tactical vs. Strategic.” Automating tactically might be for a specific purpose, possibly small, possibly a bit rough around the edges, not necessarily completely robust for everyone, etc. And Strategic automation is more critical to long-term aims, maintained and maintainable, etc.
In this talk, Alan Richardson will provide examples of automating both Strategically and Tactically for activities as diverse as supporting testing, marketing and general life. We will also consider how and when to move from automating tactically to strategically, and how the concept has helped me change my programming style and how to write better code.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
