Men's Sheds are community spaces where men can gather socially and undertake mutually agreed activities like woodworking, repairing items, or other hands-on projects. They provide a welcoming environment for men of all ages and backgrounds to share skills, learn new skills, and socialize. The goals of Men's Sheds are to reduce isolation among men and improve health and well-being, though they are grassroots organizations led by the men themselves through diverse programming of their choosing.
2. What is a Men’s Shed?
A Men's Shed is a dedicated, friendly and welcoming meeting
place where men come together and undertake a variety of
mutually agreed activities.
Men’s Sheds are open to all men regardless of age, background
or ability. It is a place where you can share your skills and
knowledge with others, learn new skills and develop your old
skills.
New members are always welcome and can be assured that there
is something of interest for everyone as the men have ownership
of the projects and decide their own programme of events.2
3. What a Men’s Shed
is not!
• It is not a formal training programme but you may gain
new knowledge and skills
• It is not a service for men but activities organised by men
• It is not a sports club but you could play sports
• It is not a health programme but your health and
wellbeing might improve
• It is not an information service but you can ask for info
you need

4. Restating of the important basics:
Sheds work because they are attractive places for men to gather
socially, regularly, voluntarily, happily, safely and do hands-on
stuff together.
They work best when it’s grassroots, local, by, for and about the
local men and the community.
Shedders are active and equal participants: not students, patients,
clients or customers.
They should be inclusive and welcoming of all men.
They are not patronizing and do not see men as having ‘a
deficit’ or being the problem.
Not naming the shed activity provides freedom to do & talk
about important other stuff (including health).
The outcomes are typically diverse and powerful. (Golding 2012)

Editor's Notes
The Problem
Men are very reluctant to get their health looked after properly
Asking for help can be seen as a sign of weakness.
More men are outside mainstream employment than ever before
Men are slower than women to recognise a mental health problem; typically remain stoic and won’t seek help even when dealing with stress of mental health issues
Men are more likely to turn to alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms
Many men have given up hope of finding further gainful employment in Ireland
So what does all this mean:
2 out of 3 who die from preventable causes are men
80% of those who die by suicide in Ireland are men
Men are losing meaning and purpose in their lives which affects their self-esteem
Mental health and stress in some men gets worse and are subsequently more prone to ill-health
Hopelessness is driving men further into depression
Men are experiencing self worth and identity crisis
Men in Ireland are more likely to be unemployed and isolated than women, they have poorer health outcomes and are more likely to die from suicide and other preventable causes and yet most services are not male friendly
