The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry organized a Finnish-Swedish Forest Friends Forever Conference in Hanaholmen, Espoo on 17-18 April. The purpose of the conference was to thank Sweden for the gift in honour of Finland’s 100 years of independence and to further enhance Finnish-Swedish cooperation in research and innovation and in forest policy. * In many regions specific forest growth is increasing and management is optimised
for additional harvesting possibilities. In other regions, especially in the
Mediterranean area, where the impact of climate change is predicted to be severe,
creating resilient, stress-tolerant forest is particularly important. In some landscapes
the main aim is nature conservation and providing ecosystem services.

13. Concluding advise to our Finnish and Swedish Forest Friends
• The EU R&D Policy is extremely important for the Nordic forest bioeconomy
• Keep in mind FI & SE are extremes in the EU: Highly integrated value-chains,
very high R&D investments, plenty of forest and primary biomass, Nordic
climate, huge net-exports, long history of SFM
• Public decision-makers: Be a voice in Brussels for a stronger support for
industry and at least 50% agenda-driven (top-down) approach in FP9
• Forest Industry and Research Community: Rally around the agreed FTP Vision
Targets. They are strong arguments for more EU R&D funding and better
policies
• The Finnish EU-presidency in 2019…is a perfect opportunity to set the agenda
and ensure the role of the forest bioeconomy and the Nordic model
