User Centered Design for map.geo.admin.ch - FOSS4G - 2013Moullet
This document discusses a redesign of map.geo.admin.ch, a Swiss government web mapping application. It notes that the original design was focused on GIS specialists rather than general users, making many functions difficult to discover and use. A user analysis found issues like unclear printing and drawing tools. The redesign proposal simplifies the interface into four main parts: navigation, search, topics for layers, and functions in one place. It also maximizes the map size and focuses on providing information rather than just data access. The goal is to make the site more intuitive for non-specialists based on applications like Google Maps that most users already know.

The document discusses redesigning the map viewer on the Swiss federal geoportal map.geo.admin.ch. It describes analyzing the existing map viewer and finding that while map navigation worked well, other functions were not discovered or understood by users. The proposed redesign includes consolidating the number of parts, increasing the map size, centralizing functions and navigation, and adding an "all in one" search tool to provide fast access to geographic information and layers. User testing is needed to improve the search interface and ensure its features are understandable.
Finnish-Russian BCB in European Context by Jussi Laine Eva Rybkova
The document summarizes the history and trends of Finnish-Russian cross-border cooperation (CBC) from the post-WWII period to modern day. Key points include: (1) CBC has evolved from a state-controlled bilateral process to one increasingly integrated within EU-Russia relations and programs; (2) While the EU framework has strengthened CBC institutions, concerns remain about funding and the subordination of local actors; (3) The future of CBC will rely on balancing the EU's geopolitical priorities with grassroots cooperation.
The document discusses developing an indicator framework to measure progress towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the subnational level in OECD regions and cities. It describes a process of co-designing the indicator framework with stakeholders, identifying relevant targets and indicators, defining end values for indicators, and developing a composite index for each SDG. Preliminary results are presented showing the distance of OECD regions from the 2030 end values by goal. A new online tool is introduced that will provide overviews and data for selected regions and cities to monitor their progress relative to country and OECD averages.

The presentation summarized the CONCUR project which examines how strategic spatial planning contributes to development in urban regions. It analyzed strategic plans from Barcelona, Hannover, and Stockholm to measure their spatial information and key components of regional governance. Regional governance indicators like coordination, agenda framing, expertise, and leadership were explored for the three cities with examples like shared projects, political dialogues, citizen participation, and administrative capacity playing a role in plan implementation. Future research will analyze how strategic plans directly impact land use and cover changes through governance arrangements.

Adrian Neal presented information on cooperation and networking opportunities through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). Cooperation projects are funded under Axis 4 of the EAFRD and involve at least one local action group from each participating country working together on common issues. The benefits of cooperation include strengthening local strategies, reaching critical mass through shared resources, improving competitiveness, promoting innovation, and developing local identity. Good cooperation projects are territorial, have clear objectives, include tangible joint actions, and build strong, enduring partnerships. The European Network for Rural Development supports cooperation by sharing information and best practices.

The document discusses plans to modernize the harbour in Norfolk Terrain, Second Harbour and Havenkwartier Noord areas. The municipality will invest substantially over coming years to refurbish quays, boost the fishing industry, build new houses, add a cable car and new art museum. The final plans are less ambitious than earlier proposals due to the economic crisis. Comments fields are used to select priorities, evaluate impact, and facilitate discussion between team members and stakeholders on the 25 key objectives of sustainable development.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
-An interactive brainstorming session to discuss and propose new feature requests.
-An opportunity to connect with fellow Power Grid Model enthusiasts and users.
