Tracy J. Terry discusses imprinted chitosan, a biodegradable material made from fishing industry byproducts, that can selectively sequester nutrients like phosphate, nitrate, and arsenic from agricultural and wastewater. Imprinted chitosan has potential applications in fertilizer, effluent treatment, and metal ion removal. Future work aims to further optimize imprinting selectivity and process chitosan into beads for enhanced filtration of different target ions from waste streams.
