Pacific Northwest National Labs - Electric Vehicle ProjectsForth
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) conducts electric vehicle (EV) research projects. PNNL manages the Electric Infrastructure Operations Center and has studied how EVs can help integrate renewable energy by charging from the electric grid. Studies show the existing grid has capacity to charge a high percentage of EVs each night without overloading transformers. PNNL has developed smart charging technologies that can provide grid services by modulating charging based on grid needs. These technologies help lower emissions and electricity rates by filling valleys in demand. PNNL is also testing electric buses and vehicle-to-grid systems that allow EVs to discharge power back to the grid.
