SQL Server 2016 is now in review! The newest version promises to deliver new real-time, built-in advanced analytics, advanced security technology, hybrid cloud scenarios as well as amazing rich visualizations on mobile devices.
There are many great reasons to move to SQL 2016, however if you are still working on SQL Server 2005 you may have another good motivator - the end-of-life clock of SQL 2005 is ticking down and support is about to end April 12, 2016.
In this deck we review the significant licensing changes introduced with SQL 2012. If our experience as Microsoft's Gold Certified Member has taught us anything - it is one thing. During migrations many of our clients get outright lost when trying to figure out the number of licenses they have or need. This often leads to under-deployment, and subsequently serious compliance issues with Microsoft. And yes, in some cases over-deployment means big savings back to your department.

This document compares IBM WebSphere Application Server v7 to Oracle WebLogic 11g. It summarizes that IBM has stronger performance, especially on benchmarks. It also has lower total cost of ownership due to lower licensing and support costs. IBM offers more flexible licensing terms and conditions than Oracle. The document also notes that WebSphere provides better administration, management, and tuning tools than WebLogic.
This document provides an overview of Oracle Application Express. It describes Application Express as a database-centric web application development framework that allows users to develop desktop and mobile web apps using only a web browser. Application Express stores application definitions in the database as metadata and performs data processing in the database, making page generation efficient. It also provides pre-built controls, templates, and other features that allow developers to build applications faster.
Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a database-centric web application development tool that allows developers to build fast and secure database applications leveraging their SQL and PL/SQL skills. It has no licensing costs and is fully supported. APEX has a large community of over 100,000 downloads per year and active user forums. It allows applications to be developed, deployed and used locally, in an enterprise cloud, or internet cloud.
Oracle SQL Developer is a free IDE that simplifies database development. It allows developers to browse, create and edit database objects, develop, debug and test SQL and PL/SQL, and perform migrations between databases. It is Oracle's most popular database development tool with over 1.5 million

5. JDE WebSphere App Server (WAS) Issue
• In 2005 Oracle acquires PeopleSoft (and JD Edwards)
• Oracle soon after introduces the “Red Stack” offering directly
competing with the “Blue Stack”
– Oracle Application Server then WebLogic Server
– Oracle Database
– Oracle WebCenter Portal
• In 2010 Oracle announces plans to end “Blue Stack” OEM
agreement with IBM
– End of sales to new customers 9/16/2010
– End of sales of additional licenses to existing customers 12/31/2013
– End of technical support from Oracle 9/30/16

6. Red Pill or Blue Pill?
6
Deadline is Sept 30, 2016:
• If you are running WebSphere App
Server (WAS) ie. “blue” – you need to
make a choice between relicensing
“blue” or purchasing Oracle Tech
Foundation/WebLogic Server (WLS)
• Oracle’s support line will refer you to
IBM’s support line if you are running
WAS after Sept 30.
• In order to receive support from IBM,
you must have valid entitlements
(i.e. Relicense)
• If you are running WebLogic Server
(WLS), no action required.
7. JDE App Server Options
1. Purchase IBM WebSphere “Full Use” Licenses from KS2
– Benefits: low cost + low disruption + more use cases besides JDE
– Implementation Costs: NONE
– Deep discounts to stay on the current, proven platform
• 1st year cost ~ $20k - $25k [includes 1st year of maintenance]
• 2nd year cost ~ $4k - 5k [maintenance]
• 3rd year cost ~ $4.3k - $5.3k [maintenance]
• 3 Year TCO <$35k
2. Purchase “Red Stack” – Oracle Technology Foundation
– Benefits: Support directly from Oracle plus additional functionality/value
– License Costs: $525/user (list price)*
• 1st year cost: $25k [includes 1 year of maintenance]
• 2nd year cost ~ $5.5k [maintenance]
• 3rd year cost ~ $5.8k [maintenance]
• 3 Year TCO >$35k *Customer needs to get a quote from Oracle
– Implementation Costs: 2-4 weeks to migrate plus additional testing / validation;
estimate: $10k - 25k to migrate from WAS to WLS
9. Pricing
• IBM licenses WAS by Processor Value Unit (PVU)
– A PVU is a unit of measure used to differentiate licensing of software
on distributed processor technologies
– Typical pricing for a midsize shop is $20k - $25k [KS2 can provide you
an instant quote]

10. FAQ – One View Reporting (OVR)
• Question: Customers who are currently on the IBM Blue Stack are able to use One View? If so, are there any
limitations?
• Answer: Licensing of Oracle BI Publisher is included in the licensing of JD Edwards applications to be used with
Oracle delivered schema. This means that all JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications users have rights to use BI
Publisher including One View Report for non-custom tables.
• One View Reporting Applications supports all platforms where JD Edwards EnterpriseOne runs including AS/400,
iSeries and WebSphere Application Server (WAS) However, customers need to refer to our Minimum Technical
Requirements for One View and Oracle BI Publisher. While JD Edwards EnterpriseOne supports WebSphere and
iSeries, BI Publisher only supports Web Logic Server (WLS). The licensing of BI Publisher includes rights to use
WLS standard edition for BI Publisher (so the customers do not need to license WLS just for OVR). Currently WLS
does not run on the iSeries. This means customers can continue to run JD Edwards EnterpriseOne with
WAS and iSeries but for the BI Publisher component of OVR, they need to install BI Publisher on WLS and
a platform that WLS supports.
• The install process for BI Publisher includes a component called RCU. The database that both JD Edwards
EnterpriseOne and RCU support are Oracle DB and SQL Server. So the install of BI Publisher can't use DB/400.
However, customers have rights to use Oracle Database for install and metadata reasons. So again customers
can use the Oracle Database for the install of BI Publisher without out having to purchase another database.
• So to summarize, OVR supports all platforms JD Edwards EnterpriseOne supports. The Oracle BI Publisher
component of OVR requires WLS (included on the licenses in BIP) and a Oracle DB or SQL Server DB for install
process (Oracle DB for install included in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne licensing).
11. FAQ – BI Publisher
• Question: Do I need a separate license of BI Publisher?
• Answer: No. Each licensed JD Edwards application user has a restricted use license to Oracle BI Publisher.
These BI Publisher licenses are restricted to executing and creating BI Publisher reports that access data on the
JD Edwards delivered data schema (delivered tables). The licenses for JD Edwards limit you to data from JD
Edwards’ tables as delivered by Oracle. They allow you to:
• Execute BI Publisher reports delivered by Oracle,
• Modify the layout of these delivered reports, and
• Create new Oracle BI Publisher reports that read data from the JD Edwards delivered data schema.
• If you have created custom tables or have purchased a third party product that includes new tables, the BI
Publisher licenses included with JD Edwards' applications do not allow you to create reports against those tables.
Furthermore, BI Publisher reports are limited to data generated by JD Edwards' applications.
Oracle BI Publisher Licensing:
• Restricted Use: All JD Edwards customers get this automatically.
• Limited Use: This is included with Oracle Technology Foundation.
• Full Use: Normal licensing of BI Publisher from the Oracle Technology price list.
12. FAQ/Notes
• Oracle Tech Foundation (OTF) includes JD Edwards EnterpriseOne
Core Tools and Infrastructure
• Would watchlists work ok under a “blue stack” environment?
Yes – OVR is based on WLS which is included in the BI Pub
licensing.
