Oracle Fusion | Overview
Oracle Fusion Applications (OFA) is a suite of enterprise resource planning
software applications from Oracle Corporation, and Oracle's next generation
suite of applications that eventually replace e-Business suite. It will assimilate
best of breed features from Oracle e-Business (Oracle applications) .
Oracle Fusion Applications were envisioned and pitched as an enterprise
resource planning suite - a combination of features and functionalities taken
from Oracle E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Siebel product
lines . The suite is built on top of the Oracle Fusion Middleware technology
stack; both layers implement the Oracle Fusion Architecture, which leverages
the capabilities of service-oriented architecture.

Platform as a Service
Platform as a service (PaaS) is a category of cloud computing services that
provides a platform allowing customers to develop, run and manage Web
applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the
infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app.

Oracle Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) helps enterprise IT and
independent software vendor (ISV) developers rapidly build and deploy rich
applications - or extend Oracle Cloud SaaS apps - using an enterprise-grade
cloud platform based on the industry's #1 database and application server.

Platform-as-a-Service(PaaS) VS On-Premise Software
Before the rise of SaaS (Software-as-Service) solutions, enterprise software
was delivered via on-premise installation. Customers would buy the software
license, the hardware (servers) to run it on, find office space to store the
servers, and hire staff to manage it all. All this was designed long before the
rise of the Internet.
While expensive, on-premise solutions did provide the flexibility to tailor the
application to specific customer needs, creating the ever-popular term,
“customizations”. Customers enjoyed the flexibility to customize the application
any way they wanted, but an unintended consequence soon arose. When it
came time to upgrade to a newer version, all those customizations made
upgrading extremely complex, time-consuming, and expensive. So much so
that many chose to stay on older versions rather than go through an upgrade.
Basically their customizations made it nearly impossible to upgrade to a newer
version.
