Capability models have a long history. They came out of business schools in the 50ies. In recent years the enterprise- and business architecture communities seem to have taken over, making capabilities more an IT rather than a business modeling concept. Most capability models we've seen fail to achieve their original purpose: to enable business people to design better enterprises - ones that are fit for purpose, efficient, adaptive to change and satisfy customers.
In this webinar, Wolfgang Goebl explains the typical flaws of capability models and design patterns for next-generation capability modeling. You will learn:
practical patterns to create capability maps that foster a seamless business & IT co-design
why most capability modeling efforts fail and how to overcome the usual problems
how to connect other elements of the architecture with capabilities - how to run a broad elicitation process with all relevant stakeholders
how to use capability maps in corporate management

Differentiate Big Data vs Data Warehouse use cases for a cloud solutionJames Serra
It can be quite challenging keeping up with the frequent updates to the Microsoft products and understanding all their use cases and how all the products fit together. In this session we will differentiate the use cases for each of the Microsoft services, explaining and demonstrating what is good and what isn't, in order for you to position, design and deliver the proper adoption use cases for each with your customers. We will cover a wide range of products such as Databricks, SQL Data Warehouse, HDInsight, Azure Data Lake Analytics, Azure Data Lake Store, Blob storage, and AAS as well as high-level concepts such as when to use a data lake. We will also review the most common reference architectures (“patterns”) witnessed in customer adoption.
Lambda Architecture in the Cloud with Azure Databricks with Andrei VaranovichDatabricks
The term “Lambda Architecture” stands for a generic, scalable and fault-tolerant data processing architecture. As the hyper-scale now offers a various PaaS services for data ingestion, storage and processing, the need for a revised, cloud-native implementation of the lambda architecture is arising.
In this talk we demonstrate the blueprint for such an implementation in Microsoft Azure, with Azure Databricks — a PaaS Spark offering – as a key component. We go back to some core principles of functional programming and link them to the capabilities of Apache Spark for various end-to-end big data analytics scenarios.
We also illustrate the “Lambda architecture in use” and the associated tread-offs using the real customer scenario – Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam – a terabyte-scale Azure-based data platform handles data from 2.500.000 visitors per year.

With this series of presentation, I am trying to cover aspect of Enterprise Integration Enterprise Integration is one of important component of Enterprise Architecture. It this slide, trying to explain what is Enterprise Integration and cover all topic in details in future slides.
System Integration is corner stone of today's Digital Era.
The Process of software applications does not lie only in Functionality that provides themselves, but ability to communicate with one another.
A common microservice architecture anti-pattern is more the merrier. It occurs when an organization team builds an excessively fine-grained architecture, e.g. one service-per-developer. In this talk, you will learn about the criteria that you should consider when deciding service granularity. I'll discuss the downsides of a fine-grained microservice architecture. You will learn how sometimes the solution to a design problem is simply a JAR file.
This slide deck explores the impact of MSA on API strategies and designs and the possible changes in API design and deployment, API security, control and monitoring, and CI/CD.

Track: Microservices
One of the leading assisted e-commerce players in India approached CAPIOT to rebuild their ERP system from the ground up. Their existing PHP-MySQL setup, while rich in functionality and having served them well for under half a decade, would not scale to meet future demands due to the exponential grown they were experiencing.
We built the entire system using a microservices architecture. To develop APIs we used Node.js, Express, Swagger and Mongoose, and MongoDB was used as the active data store. During the development phase, we solved several problems ranging from cross-service calls, data consistency, service discovery, and security.
One of the issues that we faced is how to effectively design and make cross-service calls. Should we implement a cross-service call for every document that we require or should we duplicate and distribute the data, reducing cross-service calls? We found a balance between these two and engineered a solution that gave us good performance.
In addition, our current system has 36 independent services. We enabled services to auto-discover and make secure calls.
We used Swagger to define our APIs first and enforce request and response validations and Mongoose as our ODM for schema validation. We also heavily depend on pre-save hooks to validate data and post-save hooks to trigger changes in other systems. This API-driven approach vastly enabled our frontend and backend teams to scrum together on a single API spec without worrying about the repercussions of changing API schemas.
What You Will Learn:
- How we used Swagger and Mongoose to off-load validations and schema enforcements.
- How microservices and cross-service calls work. One of the issues that we faced is how to effectively design and make cross-service calls. Should we implement a cross-service call for every document that we require or should we duplicate and distribute the data, reducing cross-service calls? We found a balance between these two and engineered a solution that gave us good performance.
- How we implemented microservice auto discovery: Our current system has 36 independent services, so we enabled services to auto-discover and make secure calls.
Event-driven architecture is a versatile approach to designing and integrating complex software systems. These systems tend to be easier to model and build. Event-driven architecture is not a new concept, but as more organizations contemplate microservices, this approach to system design has become appropriate in more situations and is worth a fresh look.

Digital Transformation And Enterprise ArchitectureAlan McSweeney
Digital transformation - extending and exposing business processes outside the organisation - by implementing a digital strategy – a statement about the organisation’s digital positioning, operating model, competitors and customer and collaborator needs and behaviour through the delivery of digital solutions defined in a digital architecture – a future state application, data and technology view to achieve digital operating status - is potentially (very) complex.
Digital architecture does not exist in isolation entirely separate from an organisation’s overall enterprise architecture. Digital architecture must exist within the within the wider enterprise architecture context.
Enterprise architecture provides the tools and the approaches to manage the complexity of digital transformation.
The management function that drives digital transformation needs to involve the enterprise architecture function in the design and implementation of digital strategy and organisation, process and policies and the creation of a digital architecture. Management must appreciate the technology focus and the benefits of an enterprise architecture approach.
The early involvement of enterprise architecture increases successes and reduces failures. Management must trust and involve enterprise architecture. The enterprise architecture function must accept and rise to the challenge and deliver. The enterprise architecture function must allow its value to be measured.

Northwestern Mutual Journey – Transform BI Space to CloudDatabricks
The volume of available data is growing by the second (to an estimated 175 zetabytes by 2025), and it is becoming increasingly granular in its information. With that change every organization is moving towards building a data driven culture. We at Northwestern Mutual share similar story of driving towards making data driven decisions to improve both efficiency and effectiveness. Legacy system analysis revealed bottlenecks, excesses, duplications etc. Based on ever growing need to analyze more data our BI Team decided to make a move to more modern, scalable, cost effective data platform. As a financial company, data security is as important as ingestion of data. In addition to fast ingestion and compute we would need a solution that can support column level encryption, Role based access to different teams from our datalake.
In this talk we describe our journey to move 100’s of ELT jobs from current MSBI stack to Databricks and building a datalake (using Lakehouse). How we reduced our daily data load time from 7 hours to 2 hours with capability to ingest more data. Share our experience, challenges, learning, architecture and design patterns used while undertaking this huge migration effort. Different sets of tools/frameworks built by our engineers to help ease the learning curve that our non-Apache Spark engineers would have to go through during this migration. You will leave this session with more understand on what it would mean for you and your organization if you are thinking about migrating to Apache Spark/Databricks.

Presentation about Oracle Application Express - getting started to getting productive. Check out http://bdb.intelivideo.com for a full ApEx education for just $49.99!!!!
Oracle Application Express is using its own syntax to pass URL parameters, called the f?p syntax. In fact, there is only one standard URL search-path parameter: "p". This makes APEX URL’s less readable for users and very difficult to understand for search engines. In my session I will explain and demonstrate a few techniques to use standard URL syntax in conjunction with APEX, in order to present pretty URL’s to users and search engines, just using the APEX Listener and the database.
Oracle Apex - 3 real-life case studies (Pretius presentation for WDI2015)Pretius
Case-studies (in polish) from the presentation:
1. CASE STUDY: Sales Commission / Rozliczanie prowizji sprzedażowych
2. CASE STUDY: Data visualisation / Wizualizacja danych
3. CASE STUDY: Database application / Aplikacja bazodanowa
Aplikacja bazodanowa bez GUI lub z interfejsem napisanym w archaicznym narzędziu. Posiadamy gotowe tabele, widoki, relacje i obsługujące procesy biznesowe funkcje, pakiety i procedury. W kolejnym kroku dodaliśmy edycję i konfigurację.

Get the Look and Feel You Want in Oracle APEXJorge Rimblas
You just received an image or layered file from marketing with the design for an application you need to build. You're wondering what to do. How do I translate this into a usable APEX template? APEX provides great flexibility that allows your applications to fit within your corporate visual theme, but many people don't realize that the APEX built-in themes are not static or your only option. HTML and CSS can be daunting when your expertise lies within the database realm. This session will show you that a little understanding goes a long way.

Modern DevOps across Technologies on premises and clouds with Oracle Manageme...Lucas Jellema
DevOps team are responsible for well performing applications in every aspect, through the entire life cycle and across the stack, including platform and infrastructure, on premises and all cloud environments. Keeping watch on current and predicted behavior of all running components is not an easy challenge.
The challenge is growing with multi tier architectures and IT landscapes distributed across technology stacks, locations and clouds. Oracle Management Cloud provides advanced capabilities to do application, platform and infrastructure monitoring and root cause log analysis. This session introduces OMC and tells about real live experiences with OMC for managing demanding non functional requirements in very hybrid environments. The objective discussed is to quickly spot problems – ideally before they occur – find the cause and a solution and apply the latter. The session demonstrates what OMC can do for Oracle Fusion Middleware and Database, both on premises and in the public cloud.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
