The document discusses software defined networking (SDN) and HP's role in enabling SDN solutions. It provides an overview of the SDN architecture which separates the network into infrastructure, control, and application layers. The control layer uses OpenFlow to communicate with the infrastructure layer and applications can leverage this to interact with the network. HP has developed the HP Virtual Application Networks framework to deliver SDN solutions using OpenFlow. SDN solutions can provide benefits such as network virtualization and automation across campus and data center networks.
Delivering Reliable Telephony via Desktop as a Service, Artisan InfrastructureAlan Quayle
This document discusses the challenges of combining unified communications (UC) and desktop as a service (DaaS). It notes that while individual cloud applications may be simple to build, UC and DaaS have real-time dependencies that require deep integration, monitoring of all components, and troubleshooting across protocols and cloud infrastructure. The document argues that a common platform is needed to manage these complex interactions at scale for the enterprise. Overall, it frames UC and DaaS together as a significant technical challenge but also an major business opportunity for providers that can solve the integration problems.

This document outlines 5 reasons why telco cloud offerings may fail:
1. Not partnering with the right companies and trying to control the entire value chain alone.
2. Not involving customers in product development to understand their needs.
3. Partnering with vendors that do not help develop core competencies or provide the right services.
4. Providing "one size fits all" cloud bundles that do not meet the needs of different customer segments.
5. Using sales channels that are not effective for cloud services, such as those better suited to traditional telecom offerings.

From Data Centers to Cloud Services, Inside the Backbone of a New Economy - C...Clipperton Finance
Clipperton Finance, a leading European corporate finance boutique serving the technology and media industries, has released a Research Paper covering the evolution and current trends of the Data Management market.
The essentially virtual “New Economy”, is in fact inherently tied to the very physical world of traditional Data Center and Telecom networks. In this era of online advancement, these physical networks are placed under unprecedented new demands through the proliferation of online rich media and cloud computing leading to an explosion in storage capacity and networking needs. In turn, the virtual data underworld is undergoing a true revolution.
One consequence is remarkable: as the cost and complexity of managing Data Centers increases exponentially, this function is more and more outsourced by the large companies that previously managed their own infrastructure on-site.
This paper focuses on this Outsourced Data Center market and demonstrates how this particular value chain is maturing and organising itself:
· Upstream: a new category of players have rapidly emerged – the Wholesalers.
· Downstream: Hosting offerings are experiencing significant commoditizing pressure and need to act fast.
· In the middle: the “Colocators” need to find there position in this newly organized ecosystem.
Today this value chain is dominated by large US companies, but significant European exceptions exist: OVH in France, Telecity in the UK, 1&1 in Germany.
The paper also features European players that we deem “ones to watch”.
KPN launched the Simplification and Innovation (S&I) program to tackle increasing changes in the telecommunications sector due to disruptive technologies. Under S&I, the startup business unit S&I Digital was created to transform KPN into a simplified, data-driven company ready for the digital world. S&I Digital innovates based on customer needs through cross-functional agile teams consisting of highly skilled people. It has implemented practices like continuous delivery, automated testing, and DevOps to speed up product development and reduce time-to-market. S&I Digital aims to make KPN lean and agile through profound changes to its architecture, culture and ways of working.

It suggests that Agile may be misunderstood or implemented incorrectly, with processes done wrongly, roles misunderstood, lack of face-to-face communication, unstable teams not focused on people, and lack of coaching. While India is behind in adopting Agile, the real issue may be how Indians are approaching Agile rather than Agile itself. The document advocates for simple frameworks that build winning teams and products.
The document summarizes the pedagogical approach to teaching the laws of returns. It outlines three units that teach: 1) the law of constant returns, 2) the law of diminishing returns, and 3) the law of increasing returns. For each unit, it defines instructional objectives, activities, and evaluation techniques. It provides tables and examples to illustrate the law of constant returns, where marginal production remains the same as the variable factors of production increase.

Certus Accelerate - Disruptive Thinking Disrupting Markets by David MastCertus Solutions
With at least 1500 self-declared start-ups currently operating in Australia – and a spate of recent global success stories like Atlassian, Freelancer, and OzForex – larger enterprises are taking notice of their up-and-coming counterparts like never before. Many big businesses are proclaiming their intent to “disrupt like a start-up”; some are taking it further with seed funds, incubators, and employee stints in co-working hubs. But what does disrupting like a start-up really mean? And can traditional organisations really do it?
As a Technologist and IBM’s Bluemix lead for A/NZ, David has witnessed firsthand how organisations can transform with themselves through disruptive technologies and business models. In this session he will share with you the blueprint to becoming a disruptive market force.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

BUT first, a word of caution... there are alot of vendors out there promising the next generation of openness and flexibility. Problem is, they're doing with re-tread proprietary stack concepts. Before diving in, you need to consider things like portability, Interoperability, and true openness.
1) There are typical customer IT challenges these days. Less budget (read some of them) 2) meanwhile the customer business growth demands – IT sustainability and continuous IT development to support and reach the business growth target, e.g. more services in the market, higher profit 3) here we see a gap between current IT reality and business expected target What are the options to bridge the gap?
We believe that open source software can and should play a significant role in your plans and your reference architecture for application development, deployment, management and integration. Open Source, in no uncertain terms, has matured. It's now mainstream. In fact, nearly 80% of enterprises have already used open source software as part of their development projects. Now, deployment.... that's a slightly different story.
So what is that set's JBoss apart from our competitors? We believe it boils down to four things. The traditional proprietary middleware vendors out there also have comprehensive middleware stacks, and a global customer base. But where we differ is in the proven quality of our support, which we'll talk about in a few minutes. The simplicity, fairness and flexibility of our pricing model. We price based on the # of cores – either virtual or physical. We don't employ complex formulas or multipliers. We also build our software in an open, collaborative environment. By following a continuum of community projects to enterprise products, it's all done in the open for you to see, test, and even contribute back to influence it's direction. Finally the way we deliver software and support to our customers via a subscription model that places you in control. With a current subscription, you get the newest versions as soon as they are released. No need to pay for new licenses. So you can upgrade you your schedule, not you vendors.
NYSE Euronext is just one of many customers who selected JBoss for all of the above reasons and more. Their results? The were able to deploy their Stockwatch application – a mission critical app handling over 100 thousand messages per second – and in the process consolidate legacy middleware, increase performance, deployment speed, flexibility, reliability and security They also streamlined their operations and reduced failover and development lifecycles.

Being enterprise class means being more than just a best of breed component. It requires a comprehensive middleware portfolio. The JBoss Enterprise Middleware portfolio is just that. Delivering tools and platforms for developing, deploying and managing applications and services, integrating applications, services and data, managing business rules, and enabling rich user interaction and collaboration – either on premises or in the cloud. For those who are not entirely familiar with JBoss Enterprise Middleware today – we're much more than just an application server.
Now you've got a bunch of stand alone applications. Some build on JBoss, some may be legacy or .NET, some might just be outside services like news feed.
But to deliver a solution, you need to integrate them. That's where JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform comes in. It's a A flexible, standards-based platform to integrate applications, SOA services, and business events as well as to automate business processes.
In addition to applications and services, you'll also need to integrate data, at times from multiple data sources. That's where JBoss Enterprise Data Services, formerly MetaMatrix, comes in. It's a powerful data services management system that enables you to work with data across diverse systems. What this means is you no longer have “pockets” of out of sync data, instead you can have a single version of the truth.
With all the applications, services and data integrated, you're also going to need something to manage all the business rules the govern your solution. Hard coding them into the applications would produce brittle, highly inflexible applications that are very hard and time consuming to change. The fast pace of business demands that you can quickly change the # of miles required for an upgrade, or the number of nights stayed to get one free. That's where Jboss Enterprise BRMS comes in. It's an An open source business rules management system that enables easy business policy and rules development, access, and change management.
Finally, you need a stellar user interface to pull it all together. That's where JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform comes in. It's a Platform for building and deploying portals for personalized user interaction with your enterprise applications and automated business processes.
We believe that open source software can and should play a significant role in your plans and your reference architecture for application development, deployment, management and integration. Open Source, in no uncertain terms, has matured. It's now mainstream. In fact, nearly 80% of enterprises have already used open source software as part of their development projects.
