Red Hat OpenShift - a foundation for successful digital transformationEric D. Schabell
The usage of containers is exploding and according to a recent report Red Hat is the vendor best placed to capitalize on this. To us it is pretty simple - Containers are Linux and Red Hat is the leader on Linux. But we move beyond that, addressing the wider use-case - building a complete innovation platform, harnessing the power of the hottest open source projects on the planet, integrated into a complete end-end experience from development to production across any footprint - on-prem to cloud.

Containers Anywhere with OpenShift by Red Hat - Session Sponsored by Red HatAmazon Web Services
OpenShift is Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that lets developers quickly develop, host, and scale Docker container-based applications. OpenShift enables a uniform and standardised approach to container management across all hosting options including AWS/EC2 and other private/public cloud and on/off-premise variants.
At this session, you will learn how Red Hat's enterprise clients are using OpenShift to enable their digital transformation initiatives. Examples will cover how realising a hybrid cloud strategy can simplify and reduce the risk of migrating and transitioning application workloads to containers in the cloud.

Because of its well thought out and powerful abstractions, robust and cloud-native architecture, and the vibrant community around it, the use of Kubernetes for containerized workloads has surged. And while Kubernetes is theoretically ready to run applications in production, the actual viability is highly dependent on how Kubernetes itself is managed. In this session Cornelia and Fred will cover role of the container orchestration system in your IT landscape, and they’ll dive under the covers to show how it provides the enterprise-class Kubernetes services you need to trust your most critical workloads to it. Yes, technical details revealed!

Initially built to deploy and manage the Cloud Foundry “Elastic Runtime”, the platform that allows application developers and operators to easily deploy and manage applications and services through the entire app lifecycle (including production!), Cloud Foundry BOSH is a system that manages any virtual machine clusters of arbitrarily complex, distributed systems. You define your release through packages (what gets installed on the VMs), jobs (what is run on the VMs) and a deployment manifest (declaration of the cluster) and BOSH will first deploy and then continue to maintain your cluster to match that desired state. The result is a self-healing, eventually consistent system that markedly reduces the operational burdens and supports a great number of other Devops functions such as canary, zero-downtime upgrades, autoscaling, built in high availability and more. In this session we’ll show you how to create, deploy and manage a BOSH release, and we’ll watch what BOSH does when bad things happen.

Knee deep in the undef - Tales from refactoring old Puppet codebasesPeter Souter
As Puppet pushes into it’s second decade of reign, there are several organisations out there that have been using Puppet for a long time. Sometimes, even since the beginning!
With the EOL announcement Puppet 3.X release, we’ve had a number of customers approach us to help with their upgrade. Normally the upgrade itself is fairly, it’s the code base that gives the biggest challenge, especially those with over 3 years of organic growth.
So let’s spread the word of common anti-patterns and issues that can come back to bite you
We’ll be talking about how Hiera is both the best and worst thing to happen to Puppet, marvel at how people were happily running 0.2 Puppet in production and what hacky solutions that seemed good at the time will come back to bite you!
By the end of this, you’ll hopefully have learnt how to make sure that your Puppet code is defensively coded to to make sure your Puppet code base is healthy for the next decade!
If you work with or at a Telco, Financial Institution or a Government entity, you probably already know about compliance and the various acronyms and headaches it can bring.
How can we make this less of a painful process?
Well, if you think about it: compliance is a set of rules that someone has given you to enforce and prove that they're being enforced. What is Puppet? A series of rules for systems that need to be enforced. So compliance is the perfect use-case for configuration management.

LinuxCon North America 2013: Why Lease When You Can Buy Your CloudMark Hinkle
Perhaps one of the perplexing things about cloud computing is the choice around renting time in someone else’s cloud (Amazon, Google, Rackspace or a myriad of others) or building your own. It’s not unlike the age-old car buyer’s dilemma, take the lower payments and lower total miles lease or buy the car and drive it for the long haul. Cloud computing users are often faced with the same conundrum. This presentation will focus on how to buy and build a cloud that can be fulfill the needs of most users including strategies for making use of the open source private cloud or managing workloads in both the private and public cloud using open source software.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

26. RED HAT BELIEFS
INSERT DESIGNATOR, IF NEEDED26
ü Cost needs to be shifted from expensive legacy infrastructure to
innovation
ü IT needs to deliver new cloud services and help accelerate self-
service and new application delivery
ü A more agile application architecture is necessary to allow
developers to use their favorite languages and tools, enabling them
to release early and often without business/infrastructure risk
ü Organizations require modern, secure, cloud-native applications that
can be frequently updated to meet internal and external needs

MICROSERVICES: WHY NOW?
43. MICROSERVICE PRINCIPLES/
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Deployment Independence - updates to an individual
microservice have no negative impact to any other component of
the system. Optimized for replacement – not reuse
2. API Focused – not restricted to a single technology/language/
protocol
3. Do one thing well - small enough and no smaller
4. Aligned with Business
5. Decentralized Data Management
