Jarvis Cocker created a magazine cover in Photoshop by deleting the purple background with the magic wand tool, changing it to a blue/black gradient. He then added a bold black masthead font and rearranged layers to put the model in front of it. Finally, he included a barcode image. Through this activity, Jarvis learned how to delete backgrounds and ensure high quality images for neat selection and work.

3. I began by using the magic want tool
to delete the purple background. I
then decided that as the magazine
appeared to be aimed at men, blue
would be a good idea for the
background. So I changed the
background colour to a blue/black
gradient.
Then, I created the masthead. I used a
bold black font. I decided that I
wanted the model to be in front of the
masthead, so I re-arranged my layers
to create my desired effect.
I concluded by adding a bar code
image which would be used to scan
the magazine in shops.

4. From taking part in this activity, I have learnt new skills in photoshop. I learnt
how to delete backgrounds which is a very important part in magazine making
and a skill that I am likely to use when creating my own magazine.
As the original image was quite blurry, I found that it was difficult to delete the
background and difficult to select everything with the magic want tool. So I
know to ensure my images are good quality when the time comes to take my
own photo’s, thus, making my work neater and easier to complete.
