Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar, Punjab where a massacre took place in 1919. On April 13, 1919, British Indian army troops fired rifles into a crowd that had gathered for a peaceful protest, killing between 1,526 and 1,650 people. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a pivotal moment in India's independence movement, causing many Indians to renounce British rule and work actively to gain independence from Britain. A memorial was built at Jallianwala Bagh in 1951 to honor those who died.
