Biometrics: A New Wrinkle Changes the Authentication Landscape mercatoradvisory
Criminal theft of passwords has made passwords obsolete, and so a new factor is required for authentication. Biometrics will be that new factor. It increases security and will prove more convenient for the consumer than passwords as it transitions into a persistent identity over the next 5 to 8 years. Increasingly smartphones are shipping with trusted execution environments that can displace traditional hardware security fobs. These new smartphones are critical to this fundamental shift in biometrics.
A new research report from Mercator Advisory Group titled Biometrics: A New Wrinkle Changes the Authentication Landscape explains the need for multimodal biometric authentication and describes many types of biometrics available from various technology providers. The report shows how biometrics technology has shifted from a primarily hardware-based solution to a software-and cloud-based solution enabled by smartphones that have become much more secure. With voice and face recognition, and now the addition of behavioral biometrics, this shift will drive rapid new innovation and will tip the market in favor of the mobile architecture.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Good afternoon. It’s a pleasure to be with you here today. I’d like to thank the many sponsors for making this conference possible and 3GPP / Informa for inviting me to speak on behalf of Verizon. My name is David Jackson and I happen to be based in Reading UK. For the next 15 mins or so I’d like to discuss how Verizon has set out to achieve wide scale coverage of 4G LTE in the U.S. – Our 10 year vision of connecting everyone to everything – and how we are building a competitive advantage through broadband mobility and cloud-based services innovation.
Before we get started, I would like to draw your attention to our Safe Harbor statement. The factors which may affect future results are contained in our SEC filings, and are also available on our website.
As you may know, Verizon officially launched 4G LTE late last year to 38 major markets and 60 plus airports in the United States. As of last month we cover more than 100 markets across the country covering a population of more than 160 million people. By the end of this year we will offer service in 175 markets and on be on pace to cover more than 290 million people by the end of 2013. One of our many success with regard to 4G LTE has been our growing eco system of carrier equipment and end user devices. We offer a broad range of 4G LTE enabled smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. During the 2Q 2011 alone we sold more than 1 million 4G LTE devices. Other notes: From 2Q Earnings – accelerated revenue growth and improved margins Wireless 6.6% YoY increase in service revenues 106 million total connections Lowest post paid churn in 3 years
This map shows wireless coverage. Our current LTE markets are the yellow dots with the green stars indicating those markets we plan to launch by year’s end. While not so long ago, such a large scale LTE deployment may not have seemed economically viable, our customers rapidly growing expectation for speed, bandwidth, and more ubiquitous IP enabled data access continues to positively influence the business case. 5 years ago, who would have expected You Tube (at least in the U.S.) would be one of the key driving apps? Obviously our LTE architecture meant a more effective data network value proposition – lower cost per bit – for Verizon and our customers. Deployment meant managing new technology risk, maintaining quality service through transition, spending a significant amount of capital, leveraging wire line backhaul and backbone synergies.. And did I mention, we over many new 4G LTE devices. Other notes: From 2Q Earnings In first-half 2011, Verizon’s capital expenditures totaled $8.9 billion, compared with $7.6 billion in first-half 2010. Verizon continues to expect full-year 2011 capital spending to be similar to its 2010 investment of $16.5 billion.
Switching gears some.. I work in a segment that primarily services our global enterprise customers and what is perhaps most fascinating to me is how broadband mobility is shaping our future. Take my typical customer as an example – the CIO.. Increasingly they are challenged with; Rising energy costs Emerging markets and the middle class Regulation and de-regulation A fragmentation of business models On-going globalization And of course rapid consumerisation of new technology and the growth of social networking
This is why we are convinced that the modern to emerging companies of the future – at least those most successful – will focus on innovation. CIOs of the future will focus on their company’s business model, will create a competitive advantage, will place a higher priority on their company’s customer, and they will continue to increasingly outsource – moving more and more applications to the Cloud.
With the advent of true broadband mobility and enterprise grade cloud applications and multi-media, even my normal – which may have been working in an office, using a personal computer, collaborating with co-workers in Chicago, let’s say to buy or sell a car – is now just as likely to be me, working from home or in a coffee shop, using a tablet or smartphone, collaborating with others in Caracas or Chennai.. And maybe instead it’s just as common for us to rent or lease a car.. Perhaps even more so to hire a taxi and pay a metered “utility-based” service. Other notes: Buy a car (years) > rent a car (days) > hire a cab (minutes)
If you think the last few years have seen some dramatic changes – the rise of emerging markets, the growth of ecommerce, social media, mobile working, SaaS, the long tail, ‘free’, cyberwarfare, wikileaks… well, the future has more in store. GARTNER: By 2012 , 20 percent of businesses will own no IT assets - At least one-third of business application software spending will be as service subscription instead of as product license Social networking to replace email for 20% of business users - 80% Fortune 1000 will use some level of cloud computing services, and 30% will only pay “on demand” for infrastructure provided via Cloud based models. By 2016 , all Global 2000 companies will use some significant level of public cloud services. Innovation accomplishments will be among the top-three selection criteria for new CIOs. And the pace of change is truly breathtaking.. Research analysts predict that; By next year 5x more data will be created than in 2008 By 2014 over 90% of Internet traffic will be video (nearly 60% of that streaming) By 2015 half of businesses will get 80% or more of their IT services from the Cloud By 2019, the 4 BRIC countries will be in the top 6 economies of the world And RCR Wireless News forecasts by 2020 there will be a more than 2 billion machine to machine connections M2M Figure: Tracy Ford with RCR Wireless News. In 2009, nearly 50,000 blood-pressure monitors were used in telehealth applications, but shipments of these devices will hit 500,000 by 2013. In addition, the global combined unit shipments of home-use digital blood-glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, weight scales, pulse oximeters and peak flow meters used in telehealth applications will grow to more than 1.6 million The market for wearable devices will exceed 100 million units annually by 2016 A study released by ABI last June estimated that 80 million of those units would be fitness sensors
Our mHealth platform, in development, will power Remote Health Management, as well as our Virtual Care solution and other solutions that are part of our mHealth roadmap For Remote Disease Management, we will provide Turnkey remote disease management platform that will enable payers, clinicians and caregivers to remotely monitor and intervene, based on a patient’s conditions and drug adherence It is designed to be a flexible solution, device vendor-agnostic, and applicable to wide-range of chronic diseases The solution encompasses: Connected Medical Devices Apps Transport Layer Fulfillment And the mHealth Platform itself, which consists of Configurable Rules Engine Data Analytics Data Security/ HIPAA Compliance Intelligent Routing
Purpose: Highlight the applications that are built on top of the platform. There are the applications that exist today. The applications we have planned in our roadmap for the next 2 releases. And, finally applications that perhaps we don’t know about yet, or custom apps that the utilities can build on their own (or with a partner). Key Message (pick the applications that make the most sense and talk to those): In addition to the robust functionality that we have in the platform, we have several applications that are pre-built and ready for you to implement. Additionally, because our platform is open, we welcome others to develop applications on top of our platform using our API’s. So, whether your own IT department wants to tackle a project, or you want to have a System Integrator or eMeter partner build the custom app, you will be able to leverage the eMeter platform to support it. This means that no matter what the future brings, we’ll be able to continue to build new applications and so will you.
As our world, the industry, and our markets continue to evolve, so too must the Enterprise. Our global network continues to delivery managed and communication services to our customers. Our suite of cloud-based IT, security and professional services continue to build upon and leverage our core competencies. All of these capabilities are increasing being offered as a utility-based services, further driving better business outcomes for mid-sized, large enterprises and government agencies. In addition, within the wireless space, open development has brought us smart grids and more intelligent healthcare devices and applications. Machine-to-machine means a new service delivery platform and more effective and efficient device management. And our latest LTE innovation centres mean fascinating new embedded devices, gaming and entertainment, and telematics. Other notes: Our solutions and practice areas are aligned to provide innovative ways to solve business and technology challenges, such as: Gaining visibility into applications to improve their performance and create a better user experience Improving server and application efficiencies to help control costs Securely putting data into the hands of those who need it inside and outside customer organizations Meeting the many data security compliance requirements customers face Using collaboration technologies to help improve productivity and reduce expenses and environmental impacts associated with travel and office facilities Updating infrastructure to enable employees, customers, suppliers and partners to communicate from almost anywhere Investigating opportunities to improve systems and processes, while focusing IT resources on things most strategic to your business success Finding ways to control capital expense, while reducing total cost of ownership
