This document discusses several issues and debates related to news media. It addresses topics like regulation and ethics in news reporting, the rise of 24-hour news coverage, the increasing entertainment aspects of news, and the growing role of citizen journalism. The document outlines some of the key considerations and trade-offs around each of these trends, such as balancing free speech with libel laws, keeping the public informed with breaking news while maintaining quality, and harnessing user-generated content while avoiding bias.
1. The document discusses the personalization of news media through an increased focus on human interest stories, celebrities, and ordinary people in extraordinary situations.
2. It explores the reasons why news outlets may personalize content, including to explain events through individuals and engage audiences, but also notes dangers like detracting from factual information or oversimplifying issues.
3. The document concludes that while personalization helps news producers connect with fragmented audiences, it can encourage a passive response and lower news quality when it replaces substantive news with infotainment or tabloid-style content.
The document discusses the "dumbing down" of intelligent search and provides suggestions for improving search experiences. It contains several quotes about search engines, users, and the importance of understanding user needs. The document advocates that search engines should be configured by those who understand the business domain rather than just engineers, and that users, content providers, and search engine builders all have responsibilities in delivering a quality search experience.

The document discusses the need for a new design process called "atomic design" in the post-PSD era. It outlines some of the problems with the traditional pixel-perfect PSD workflow and presents atomic design as an alternative. Atomic design involves designing systems rather than pages by breaking interfaces down into reusable atomic elements like atoms, molecules and organisms. This allows for faster, more collaborative and responsive design processes.

MIMA 2014 - Changing your Responsive Design Workfloweaselsolutions
Presentation slides from Dustin Tauer's 2014 MIMA Session:
What is your Web workflow? If your situation mirrors that of most organizations, the process often begins with some initial planning and discovery, followed by the design phase. In the design phase, Photoshop is opened and wireframes evolve into static designs. Once approved, these designs are passed to the developer which leads to testing, tweaking, and finally, launch. This workflow is great for traditional websites, but major evolution is needed to account for the changing landscape that is responsive design.
This session will present different strategies and processes for effectively designing and developing responsive websites. We’ll look at how taking a content-first approach rather than a design-first approach can significantly reduce the number of issues and iterations throughout the process. With mobile traffic quickly surpassing desktop traffic, a new workflow process is imperative to helping us be better prepared for the constantly changing device landscape.
Discover the top 9 modern web design trends for 2024, from AI-driven interfaces to immersive 3D visuals. Stay ahead in the digital landscape by embracing minimalist aesthetics, dark mode, and voice user interfaces. These cutting-edge web design trends will enhance user experience and engagement, ensuring your website remains contemporary and competitive. Partner with a leading Web design Company to implement these trends effectively.
Matt Rideout, from iBec creative, doesn't want you to redesign your website. Instead he wants you to fix all the things that are underperforming, as you learn about your customer's likes and dislikes until you end up with a fresh site that is working at it's highest potential. Think high impact + low investment. Sound like a fresh, awesome and really effective strategy for web design? We think so too.
Iterative Design
This information packed Pub Talk begins with some good old common sense advice, and some compelling stats on how to reorient your web design efforts from the high risk launch and fail model of the past, to a more comfortable, and effective, iterative design model. Matt shares lots of great examples of how some small changes added up to big impact.
3 Step process
Matt breaks the iBec iterative design process down into parts. This straight forward approach shows you how to target your problem areas, develop a hypothesis about what's wrong, and then test it. He shares some real world examples that show how they uncovered areas that could be improved, then walks you through how they tackled the problem, and finally shares the results.
Online testing tools you will use
Did I mention that most of the tools they use are either free or very inexpensive? Matt shared tools for funnel visualization, heat mapping, scroll tracking, and getting feedback from visitors. He also explained how they used those tools to answer some important questions about why customers where abandoning the checkout, bouncing on the homepage and generally not understanding the offer.
Test, Test, Test
Always be testing—that's the mantra. By understanding where the roadblocks or bottlenecks are, measuring the changes and then refining the site, Matt and his team have been able to dial up some serious improvements in their client's e-commerce sites.
This was a terrific class with lots of actionable advice and some really cool tools.
Better User Experience for WordPress Sitesaungstad

It stresses the importance of content, calls to action, and metadata like excerpts and contact details to create a high-quality user experience.
The SEO audit report summarizes optimizations needed for a real estate website promoting 1BHK flats in Pune, India. The meta title is optimized but the description could be improved. Keyword and description suggestions are provided. Content on the site provides details about the amenities, location, architecture, and furnishings of the flats. Issues found include unstable feedback pages, slow page loads due to large image files, missing XML sitemap, lack of SSL certificate, and low domain authority due to insufficient backlinks. Recommendations are given to address each issue.
This document summarizes the author's experience moving from heading the web services team at a modern, centralized university to a traditional, decentralized university. At the modern university, there was a strong emphasis on branding and visual identity across a centralized website. However, at the traditional university, websites were managed separately by different departments, leading to duplication, incorrect information, and a lack of consistent branding or user experience. The author outlines steps to improve communication, gain support from top administrators, and reshape the web team to develop a unified online identity and branding while still supporting individual departments.

Social participation through forums and blogs has been used for student recruitment in higher education. Existing social media sites or creating your own can help drive traffic and peer recommendations. Fears around negative comments, lack of control and the unknown are holding institutions back. To improve, institutions should assign responsibilities, build relationships through targeted content, embrace change and recognize social media's potential for recruitment.
The document outlines the tasks for a photo scavenger hunt held at the University of Greenwich from June 25-27, 2019 as part of the IWMW 2019 conference. Participants were instructed to find Prime Meridian markers, take photos with strangers in uniforms, get to know local dogs, pour drinks, carry large objects, hang from fences, mourn a dead parrot, multitask, and pretend to be king of the world.
1) The University's web estate has evolved organically leading to gaps in knowledge and risks from fragmentation.
2) There are over 1,497 websites using various platforms with over 1 million pages, but governance is limited and quality varies widely.
3) The strategy aims to establish central governance and standards while allowing flexibility, with a unified modern platform, engaged user communities, and data-driven decision making.
Static Site Generators - Developing Websites in Low-resource ConditionIWMW
Paul Walk discusses static site generators as an alternative to content management systems for publishing websites. Static site generators allow content to be authored in simple text files using formats like Markdown and compiled into static HTML and CSS that can be hosted on basic web servers. They provide benefits like minimal infrastructure needs, easy preservation of content, and increased security compared to systems that rely on databases. However, they may not be as user-friendly for content authoring. In general, static site generators are best suited for smaller, simpler websites that don't require advanced user access controls or dynamic functionality.

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

The New UCE Site
• The content needs attention
Came from prospectus entries

The Future - use a Commercial
Site Designer?
• Good advice from Danny Birchall
(http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/website-info-mgt/1998-03/0005.html)
– Go to the designer with some clear ideas about how
you want the site to look.
– The one thing you really need set the budget at the
top of the discussion and say "what do I get for
£XXXX?”
– Carefully spell out the accessibility you want for the
site. Designers do not understand the concept of
cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility.

The Future - use a Commercial
Site Designer?
• But it can all go wrong
– They do not understand our market.
– They design for the new commercial power users.
– They try to sell you their ill defined, in-house
solutions.
– They do not know how to deal with knowledgeable
clients.

The Future - use a Commercial
Site Designer?
• I can now reveal
– We took their graphics (demanded and received
copyright)
– We accepted their internal search solutions, but
required documentation so could reuse elsewhere
– We rejected their Info Management System -
appeared to solve problems, but only made them
– Nearly got caught in not defining deliverables

The Future - use a Commercial
Site Designer?
• Would I go outside again?
– Costed internal solutions not cheaper
– Process of discussion with outsiders
helped
– In the end may have more control over
outcome
• Maybe.

In conclusion
• Some UCE customers have low standard browsers
and modems
• Sites designed for browsers above Netscape 2
close out some of our customers
• In an educational marketplace UCE cannot afford
to turn away customers who want information
• But it must look good …
• And above all … have quality content
