20. The 28th
annual Children’s Miracle Network Telethon began 2010 successfully for
Children’s Hospital, raising over $1.2 million through individual pledges and corporate
donations.The telethon is a Knoxville tradition; people have donated their time and
money for nearly three decades so Children’s Hospital can fulfill its mission: “Leading
the Way to Healthy Children.”
The telethon took place Sunday, January 31, from 3-11:30 p.m., live on WBIR-TV
Channel 10.The almost nine hours of the live broadcast featured WBIR-TV personalities
urging viewers to make pledges as well as featuring live coverage of activities in the
hospital, check presentations from donors and inspiring stories of children who have
been or are currently patients at Children’s Hospital.
Funds raised during the telethon will be used to purchase new and sophisticated
medical equipment for various hospital departments to ensure that all patients will
continue to receive the best medical care available at Children’s Hospital. Since it
began, the telethon has raised about $32 million for our pediatric medical center.
As a charter member of the Children’s Miracle Network, Children’s Hospital was
one of only 22 hospitals in the nation to participate in the first telethon in 1983, which
raised more than $95,000. Since the telethon’s origin, community support for the event
has grown substantially each year.
Children’s Hospital would like to thank everyone who was involved with this
year’s telethon, including corporate sponsors Carmike Cinemas, Children’s Hospital
Volunteers, Children’s Hospital Committee for the Future, Kiwanis, Food Lion,
Golden Corral, IHOP, Journal Broadcast Group for the Star 102.1 Radiothon, Kroger,
Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores, “Baseball For Babies”Tournament, Phi Mu
fraternity, RE-MAX Realty, the University of Tennessee’s Dance Marathon event,
USA Gymnastics, Walmart, Rite Aid, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, Delta Delta Delta
Sorority (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) and Credit Unions for Kids. Also, special
thanks to WBIR-TV Channel 10 and its entire staff for its 28 years of support and its
dedication to improving the lives of children.
