4. PinStripes Hits $3 Million in15th Year
At the 15th Anniversary of PinStripes, held Friday, September 27 at
the Ballantyne Hotel, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation announced collective proceeds
of $3 million raised since the event’s inception. Funds raised benefit patients served by
Carolinas HealthCare System’s Carolinas Neuromuscular-ALS/MDA Center.
Hundreds turned out for the milestone celebration, presented by Time Warner Cable,
including prominent families who were instrumental in the opening of the ALS Center
in 1998. The Shea family and Shea Homes, longtime supporters, served as the event’s
15th Anniversary Sponsor. Along with a silent auction, the event featured special
presentations by Dianne English and Cameron Grist, whose respective families have
struggled with the challenges of neuromuscular diseases. ESPN’s Jay Bilas, longtime
supporter of the ALS Center, gave a welcome via video, and former Carolina Panther
Mike Rucker shared his family’s experiences with ALS and his personal commitment
to continue to raise awareness and funds.
For 15 years PinStripes has supported resources and coordinated services available
to patients, including: home visits from ALS team members who offer specialized care,
communications devices that are loaned to patients from The Edwin D. Holt
Communications Laboratory, assistive mobility equipment, respite caregiving support
through The Mike Rucker ALS Care Fund, respiratory equipment and care, and clinical
and laboratory research, all provided by Carolinas HealthCare System.
In partnership with Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, the PinStripes event was founded
in 1999 by Time Warner Cable executive Carole Hart and the late Ed Holt, former
Accenture executive, whose family has continued its support.

Grateful Patient Family Provides Funding
for Bladder Cancer Research
A significant gift from Betty and Don Anderson will provide new support for the bladder cancer research program at Carolinas
HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute. This funding will be instrumental in advancing innovative bladder cancer research
programs at the Institute. These programs, led by Drs. Steven Riggs and Earle Burgess, will include clinical trials designed to
enhance the treatment of metastatic bladder cancer and other studies designed to identify biomarkers that will serve as effective
means for earlier detection of bladder cancer.
This recent gift represents an ongoing commitment from the Andersons to advance healthcare and educational initiatives at
Carolinas HealthCare System. They made a significant gift to the Carolinas College of Health Sciences in 2010 to establish an
annual clinical laboratory sciences scholarship in Mrs. Anderson’s name. Betty Anderson served as the Director of the Medical
Laboratory Sciences Program at the College for many years.

RE/MAX Hits the Links for Kids
On September 30, RE/MAX Executive Realty held its 8th
annual Link Up for Kids golf tournament at Cedarwood
Country Club. While it was a beautiful day for golf and hot
air balloon rides, the most exciting moment was the
announcement of the fundraising total: $30,000 for Children’s
Miracle Network Hospitals, benefiting Levine Children’s
Hospital. The success was largely due to the contribution
of time, energy, and money from RE/MAX Executive Sales
Associates who played golf, acquired sponsors, and
coordinated a silent auction. After the tournament,
participants heard from Bryant and Laura Haines, and their
sons Evan and Eli, who benefited from care they received
at Levine Children’s Hospital throughout their treatment for
kidney disease. RE/MAX Executive Realty is an ongoing
partner of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) and
the largest RE/MAX contributor to CMNH in the Carolinas.
We thank them for their continued support and dedication to
the betterment of Levine Children’s Hospital.
Spirits are soaring in the Haines family,
who all benefited from the services
provided by Carolinas HealthCare System
and Levine Children’s Hospital.
Levine Children’s Hospital
Carolinas HealthCare System's Levine Children’s Hospital provides a breadth
of pediatric care and depth of expertise unmatched in this region. Offering
compassionate, family-centered care is the cornerstone of our philosophy
and mission.
As the most comprehensive facility of its type between Atlanta and Washington
D.C., Levine Children’s Hospital is home to the Ricky Hendrick Centers for
Intensive Care, which support pediatric intensive and cardiovascular surgery
patients. Just a few years after opening, the hospital has grown to include
more than 30 pediatric specialties and has four times received national
recognition by U.S. News World Report as one of “America’s Best
Children’s Hospitals.”
7. Bojangles’ 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, held September 30 at Providence Country Club,
raised over $250,000 for Carolinas Medical Center’s McColl / Lockwood Laboratory for Muscular Dystrophy Research.
Nearly 150 golfers representing Bojangles’ and its business partners took to the links. Following the 18-hole tournament,
participants gathered for an awards reception—which included both a silent and live auction—with Jim Shafer, longtime Charlotte
radio broadcaster, as emcee.
“Each year the entire Bojangles’ team, vendors and sponsor partners look forward to the Bojangles’ Golf Classic to benefit MDA
because we’re able to come together and contribute to a very important cause,” said Bojangles’ President and CEO Randy Kibler.
“Every dollar raised from this tournament will support breakthrough research dedicated to finding effective treatments and
ultimately a cure and help us have a positive impact on families affected by neuromuscular diseases.”

On September 21, over 400 people gathered for the 3rd Annual Stiletto Sprint to raise awareness and funds towards a cure
for ovarian cancer. Held at South Park Mall, the event also encompassed a silent auction, art honoring those who are
currently battling or battled ovarian cancer, an event photo booth and additional items to show appreciation for sprinters.
Close to $85,000 was raised to benefit the Carolinas Ovarian Cancer Fund at Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine
Cancer Institute.
This memorable fundraiser – established by Levine Cancer Institute’s ovarian cancer support group, the “Teal Magnolias” –
featured women and men of all ages competing in an 80-yard dash. Many sprinters wore teal, the color representing ovarian
cancer. Each year, most participants run in honor or memory of loved ones affected by the disease – a cancer that strikes
22,000 women in the United States each year.
Since its inception, Stiletto Sprint has continued to receive tremendous support from its presenting sponsor, the Bissell
Companies. All funds raised at the event are directed toward cutting edge research involving early detection of ovarian
cancer; support programs at Levine Cancer Institute; and community awareness initiatives.

Thanks to e-Cycle and the many sponsors and golfers, this year’s tournament raised
over $100,000 for the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Levine Children’s Hospital.
The money raised from this event will help save the lives of children today, tomorrow
and in the future,” said Michael Jackson, father of Sweet Baby Caroline.

Legacy Event Supports Ovarian Cancer Fund
The color teal dominated the 3rd Annual Teal Tea Party hosted by Lydia’s Legacy on August 18. Over 150 guests gathered for an
inspirational afternoon to raise awareness and research funds for gynecologic cancers. A portion of the event proceeds support the
Carolinas Ovarian Cancer Fund at Levine Cancer Institute. Established in 1998, this Fund supports basic research in ovarian cancer
and cervical cancer conducted through Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute.
Guests sipped tea, bid on silent and live auction items, visited the “Ask the Doc” booth, and enjoyed a modern dance performance.
The program also featured a special video tribute to all patients who have fought a gynecologic cancer.
Lydia’s Legacy was founded by Carin Ross Johnson
in honor of her mother, Dr. Lydia Jon Greene, who
passed away from complications from uterine cancer
in June 2010. Throughout her battle, Lydia was
concerned about the lack of awareness and visibility
for women’s cancers. Carin concluded the afternoon
program with a call to action to support research and
become educated about the signs and symptoms of
uterine cancers.

2013 marked a transformational year in our partnership with 24 Hours of Booty, Inc., with the group announcing a
$1 million commitment to Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute. Funds will support programs and
services at the Levine Cancer Institute Survivorship and Wellness Center.
In April, 24 Hours of Booty representatives teamed up with Levine Cancer Institute to host a private reception where
they unveiled new signage and presented the gift to Levine Cancer Institute leadership, including President
Derek Raghavan, M.D., Ph.D.
More recently, a group of sponsors and top fundraisers gathered to celebrate the success of the July event, which
raised a record total of over $1.3 million. Levine Cancer Institute’s Dr. Jeffrey Kneisl discussed how the funds are
being used.
Because cancers are detected earlier and treatment methods have become much more sophisticated, providers
are treating patients who are living longer with cancer than ever before. Levine Cancer Institute has a generous
offering of survivorship programs, such as fertility preservation, nutrition and wellness, counseling, gentle yoga. and
tai chi. The new facility allows for better
coordination of these treatments by
bringing them under one roof and using
patient navigators and their cancer
