2. 85 years of hope & healing
For more than eight decades, our donors have helped
East Tennessee Children’s Hospital touch the lives of
millions of children in our region and beyond.
When we opened our doors in 1937, it was through a
federal grant and from community donations. It cost just
$15,000 to open the 28-bed facility on Laurel Avenue,
and every dollar raised since has helped keep our doors
open, helped us expand our facilities and services, and
helped us reach more children in our community.
Today, it costs nearly $662,800 a day to operate our
organization. That’s the cost of being there for our
children when they need us most. Having those funds
means we can provide Bryan that routine blood
transfusion to help combat his sickle cell anemia. It
means Noah will have a private room and access to
Child Life support during his inpatient chemotherapy
treatments. And, in 2020, it meant Harper received the
intensive, life-saving care she needed when a tornado
struck her Cookeville home.
Like Harper, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital has
continued to recover and flourish, following two long
years in a global health crisis. Thank to our supportive
community, we were able to serve more than 430,000
patient encounters across our pediatric health system
last year. We are humbled by those families confidence
in our team and by your generosity which makes our
mission possible.
Thank you,
Matt C. Schaefer
President & CEO
3. We first met Harper in March 2020, when her Cookeville home
had been destroyed by a category F4 tornado. Harper’s parents, Chad
and Jill, share that healing for their family has come in many forms.

It is hard to believe that it has been
two and a half years since Harper’s
brain injury and that she has now
lived longer with it than without.
Since the tornado, it seems that
everything is classified as either
before or after. Two and a half years
after, we have learned so much
about life, ourselves and what is
most important in life. We have all
grown closer to God through this
tragedy that reinforced our values
to always love and stick together,
no matter what. We could not have
gone on this journey without our
family at East Tennessee Children’s
Hospital.
Healing comes in many forms.
Medically and physically, Harper
continues to hit every milestone.
She has yearly followups with her
neurologist and surgeon but after
our last visit with them, they all
seem blown away by how well
she has healed. She has graduated
from all therapies and she is living
life as a 4-year-old was meant to.
Mentally and emotionally, Harper
has been surrounded by more love
and support than she can even
imagine. The plan is for her to start
kindergarten next fall and all of her
pre-school teachers and staff have
been so supportive and helpful.
She has also continued to be blessed
by her family at East Tennessee
Children’s Hospital. Being able to
celebrate the people that saved her
has been an honor like no other.
Last spring, Harper got to throw
out the first pitch at a University of
Tennessee baseball game, and this
past summer she was able to kick
off the Children’s Hospital Butterfly
Run.
For our whole family, it has been
an honor to represent Children’s
Hospital. It has deeply helped heal
all of our emotional wounds left
from the events that led to Harper’s
injury. It has been a gift to us to
represent them in a small way this
last year. We will forever be grateful.
With love,
Chad & Jill

6. 85 years of hope & healing...
I was born 4 weeks premature in 1986 at
Ft. Sanders Medical Center and rushed to ETCH
where it was discovered I had a cleft palate.
I had surgery at 18 Months old. It was thought
I would need speech therapy and possibly tubes
in my ears. Thankfully, after some time it was
determined none of that was needed. Thankful
for the staff of ETCH for taking care of kids!

Summer of 1954, I was very sick.
Weeks went by and I wasn’t getting
any better. I was sent to Et. Tennessee
Children’s Hospital. I was diagnosed
with Polio. I spent my 6th birthday in
the hospital. I remember it well. I got
better. Thankful for those that care of
me. East Tn. Children’s hospital.

When I was 6 years old (1970),
I had a bicycle accident and
was in a coma for 4 days.
I remember waking up and asking
“Where am I and why
does this gown have no back?”
I fully recovered and am now a
neonatal intensive care nurse.

Jacksboro, Tenn.
I was diagnosed
with Lymphoblastic
Lymphoma at the
age of 16 months;
thankfully, Dr. Pais
had recently
started at ETCH!
Dr. Pais promised
my mom that he
would dance
at my wedding
and 24 years later
he fulfilled that
promise! Thanks
ETCH and staff for
your care!
- Ali
I was once a patient
and being treated for
a Wilm’s tumor. 23
years later, I was going
back to school to be
a nurse practitioner
and my pediatric
preceptor was one of
my chemo nurses!
- Niki
My adopted daughter was brought
to ETCH when she was 3 days old
because she had begun going
through drug withdrawals. She
spent 1 month and 1 day there as
they weaned her off of the drugs.
The nurses were so compassionate
to us. I will always be grateful for
all of the time spent with us, the
countless phone calls, and their
encouraging words.
