2. This will be the hospital that we turn to for trusted medical assistance. But what’s more, it’s the hospital our
children and their children will come to know and embrace in their most vulnerable moments: it’s where their
lives may be saved; where their children may be born; where their pivotal moments may be faced. It is our legacy
to them of what healthcare should be – the healthcare they deserve.
Every detail has been meticulously considered in the creation of the new
Glen Campus in order to create a state-of-the-art facility that will set
the global standard for healthcare. Clinicians and researchers will
benefit significantly from the interconnected hospitals all located
on one site: the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Children’s
Hospital, the Montreal Chest Institute, the Shriners Hospital
for Children, the Comprehensive Cancer Centre, and the
Research Institute – promoting higher efficiencies in the
transfer of research and directly impacting the quality of
patient care.
We invite every one of you to monitor the progress of
the construction yourselves, by going online at royalvic.

Who best to explain the new hospital than those
who have shaped the Royal Vic that we have
always known and loved? On the pages that
follow, take note of the Royal Vic staff
and Foundation Board Members showing
off elements of the New Vic.
Here is a quick sample of the projects you’ve helped support …
• A database designed specifically for the D.O.v.E Project (Detecting OVarian cancer Early)
• Consolidation of Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments at the women’s pavilion
• Consolidation of Endocrine Research on H5
• State-of-the-art Cardiac Surgery equipment
• The creation of a Nursing Research Centre for the betterment of nursing practices, procedures and techniques
• A Newborn Hearing Screening Program, to detect hearing problems before they adversely affect
an infant’s development
• Geriatrics Unit Renovations to improve the quality of care for our often-neglected aging community
• A grant for the Cancer Nutrition Rehabilitation Program
• Surgical instruments for better sterilization control and reduced spread of infection
• Revamping of the Urodynamics procedure area, ensuring a more efficient testing facility for
female bladder weakness
• The establishment of a Cardiology Research Lab
• Updating of the Cardiology Reception area
• Refurbishment of Maternal Fetal Medicine on F2
• The Women’s Healthy Heart Clinic, designed to increase awareness for women
who are at risk for Heart Disease
• A chronic disease self-management program that improves the quality of life
of our chronically ill patients
• A grant to the Meakins-Christie Lab for research into pulmonary disease
• The acquisition of a Magnetic Resonance Simulator (MRI)
• A grant for continued research in fertility
. . . and many more.
In all, we gifted $9.5 Million to the MUHC in 2009 / 2010 alone in
support of projects and equipment spanning a range of medical
disciplines and interests.

Someday isnow Projects2009
At long last, we are at the brink of witnessing the construction of one of the most important medical facilities in
this country. In May of 2009 the Glen site began to take shape in earnest, with the launch of preparations for
construction. The on-ramps leading to the site began to take shape; the sewage work was initiated; the hydro and
telecommunications lines were installed; the promise we had made to our community was becoming a reality. In
September 2009, the MUHC unveiled, to an exclusive, 300 person audience, the preliminary technical proposals
presented by the two consortiums bidding for the construction of the so-called “Superhospital”.
On April 1st, 2010, we broke ground.
The new Royal Victoria Hospital on the Glen Campus isn’t just about a building moving from one place to
another: it’s about a rich history of excellence in patient care, research and education recreating itself in a place
where patient care will improve leaps and bounds, research can finally meet its potential for innovation, and our
education of future medical leaders can inspire the best and brightest to learn in this city and stay in this city.

On April 1st, 2010, Quebec Premier Jean Charest, along with
Monique Gagnon-Tremblay (President of the Treasury Board and
Minister responsible for Governmental Administration), Dr. Yves
Bolduc (Minister of Health and Social Services), Montreal Mayor Gérald
Tremblay, together with Senator David Angus (Chairman of the MUHC
Board) and the Honorable Dr. Arthur Porter (MUHC Director General
and CEO), delivered the official announcement that the McGill Health
Infrastructure Group, led by SNC-Lavalin, had been chosen for the construction and maintenance of the leading-
edge facilities at the Glen Campus, as part of one of the world’s largest public-private partnerships. This site includes
the new Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre, the
Chest Institute, the Shriners Hospital for Children, and the Research Institute. It was a momentous occasion, twelve years
in the making.
Celebrating Our Future while facing adversity
Ironically, all of this happened only weeks after the world-wide economic strain became a full-blown economic
crisis – the markets hit rock bottom in March 2009, throwing everyone into a global recession. The Royal Victoria
Hospital Foundation did not emerge from the recession completely unscathed: our loyal donors continued to show
us tremendous generosity in the face of hardship, but there was no manner in which we could entirely avoid the
adversity being faced by every other charitable organization. We are tremendously grateful to our community to
report that, throughout the 2009/2010 fiscal year – at the height of the global economic crisis – while our donations
declined (in line with those of other charitable organizations), the number of donors who showed their support for
our work remained steadfast, and the number of contributions made by those donors was consistent with the prior year.
Relationship-Based Fundraising
One of the key factors to which we attribute our stability through the economic crisis, is our commitment to
relationship-based fundraising. At the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation we are determined to serve the community
in their philanthropic aspirations. The desire to aid others in need is a natural and admirable instinct which we seek
to nurture in the people of our community. What this means in broad strokes is that we do not adhere to “fundraising
by any means possible.” The 15 professionals at the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation, and the Board Members
who faithfully represent this Foundation, are constantly seeking to improve our communications and relations with
our donors, both existing and potential. We continually explore new ways in which we can keep our community
abreast of, and involved in, the Foundation and Hospital developments – particularly at this extraordinary time in
our history.
Women’s Health Initiative
One of the ways we will impact our community, and create and nurture key relationships, is through our Women’s
Health Initiative. The Women’s Health Initiative, spearheaded by the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation, supports
both the programs defined in the current Women’s Health Mission at the MUHC, as well as those belonging
to an expanded, full-body view of women’s health. We are not introducing new facets into the MUHC, we are
simply bringing a formal recognition of what services already exist within the MUHC network that are crucial to
the specific and particular needs of a woman. The MUHC has long been a central and irreplaceable resource for
women, and with the dedicated assistance of our Women’s Health Cabinet – chaired by Sara Price-Provencher – we
are now showcasing the areas that have not previously been highlighted to the community.
We are redefining what Women’s Health is, and we are inviting the women of this community to rally behind us, so
that Women’s Health may be recognized – in all its complexities – for what it is and what it could be.
The Future of the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation
We are proud to confirm that when the Royal Victoria Hospital is constructed on the Glen site (expected delivery is
October 2014) the Hospital will keep its identity in our new home and the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation will
continue to provide crucial financial support for patient care, education and research.
On Our Way to the New Site
While we are very focused on securing all the necessary support to take us to what will be the largest healthcare
facility of its kind in Canada, we continue our commitment to the current and ongoing needs of the hospital. Within
the next four years – while we are preparing to move – countless lives will be saved,
thousands of babies will be born, and the quality of life of our neighbours,
spouses, children, brothers and sisters depends on our capacity to provide
support for the hospital. We are determined to ensure the continuity of
superlative healthcare even before we are able to provide an optimal
environment. And so we will continue to work with our faithful
supporters - to care for the present and ensure for the future.
On behalf of our Board of Directors – all of whom are dedicated
volunteers in our community – and every member of the
Foundation team (many of whom are probably familiar to you
by now), we wish to thank you for making us your charity
of choice. We don’t take your generosity for granted. There
are many deserving charities that you could choose from,
and the honour of being on the list of those you actively
support is very important to us.
Thank you for being the most important part of everything
we do.

The MISSION of the RVH Foundation is to raise, manage and steward funds – primarily in support of the priorities of the
MUHC’s Royal Victoria Hospital – for the advancement of patient care, research, and medical education, to the benefit
of the Montreal community and beyond.
We are driven by our VISION to lead the Montreal fundraising community in innovative, ethical, responsible fundraising
that demonstrates irreproachable accountability, and unmistakable transparency to our donors and the community
we serve. We empower the Royal Victoria Hospital to achieve its most ambitious objectives through collaborative
relationships with our philanthropic community.
We are guided by the following VALUES:
GOVERNANCE
As a charitable organization supporting one of Montreal’s largest and most reputable
health institutions, our first priority is the responsible handling of charitable
donations and the dedicated stewardship of our donors. Whether you are
a first-time donor, a longstanding supporter, a major donor or making a
modest gift, we are committed to your experience as a valued part of this
Foundation, and to ensuring that your gift is handled responsibly.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Ethics is not an optional practice in the world of charitable giving,
it is the only acceptable code of conduct. In our leadership role as
professional fundraisers, supporting a vital Montreal institution, we
acknowledge and assume responsibility for our actions, initiatives,
decisions and policies. We strive for transparency and clarity in
all that we communicate and all that we do. We recognize and
adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights (see next page) in all of our
operations, and hold ourselves accountable to all those who
support us and our community at large.
PERFORMANCE
Performance in fundraising is not solely about how much money
is raised. It’s about how the money was raised, what strategies
were employed to raise the money, and how the money is used
to the fullest advantage of the cause. In responsible, ethical
fundraising, the ends do not justify the means – the means are the
most important part. Our fundraising practices are governed by the
internationally-recognized Code of Ethical Principles and Standards
established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (available
on our website).

The Foundation uses a variety of fundraising strategies. We capitalize on the strengths of our team members to
ensure that our financial goals are met, and that our community members and generous supporters are properly
recognized for the significant role they play in the future of our hospital, and the face of Montreal healthcare.
Our Foundation is a melting pot of diverse professionals. The team brings an eclectic blend of proficiency, including
two Certified Fund Raising Executives and over 50 years combined experience in professional fundraising. We
continually trade innovative ideas on better ways to raise money, in a stronger, more timely fashion. Our mission
is not only a statement but a passionate, daily commitment. We raise over $5 million a year to meet the stated
priorities of the MUHC, and endeavour to keep administrative costs well within acceptable fundraising parameters.
