Today we will look at how to spin up an ec2 powered site in CommandBox Pro using an AWS Marketplace AMI powered with Lucee. Brad Wood and the Ortus Team have developed the ability to spin up context sites in CommandBox. What does that mean. It means that you can have as many separate independent sites as you want running with all of the bells and whistles available on AWS.

Commandbox Pro in the AWS Cloud
The goal of CommandBox Pro Multi-Server is to provide Enterprise web server
capabilities that extend past a single instance and make CommandBox suitable for a
drop-in replacement for IIS/Apache/Nginx.

Creating multiple sites with one instance of CBPro
CommandBox already supports most of the needed features, it’s just a matter of
allowing each site to have its own virtual directories, its own server rules.

Adding new sites or domains to an OpenCms installation used to be a tedious task that required editing the OpenCms XML configuration as well as configuring the webserver to recognize the new site URL. OpenCms 9 features the new site manager tool, which allows Administrators to create new and manage existing sites with a simple GUI based interface. This new tool will automatically update the OpenCms configuration as well as the webserver configuration, without the need to restart OpenCms. In this workshop session, Rüdiger will start with a default OpenCms installation and use the site manager to remove the /opencms/opencms path prefix from the URL. He will then add some new sites and domains to the server configuration. He will also explain how to adopt the standard scripts shipped with the site manager for other webserver configurations.

What is missing in the middle is the platform for web-sites and web-apps. 4 years down the line, with the emergence of Serverless, there are still no players in this gap. We will talk about what makes a platform for web-sites and web-apps. Things frontend optimized javascript, SEO, visual builder, web methods & backend javascript as well as request time container boot. Managing a server infrastructure in a fastpaced environment like a start-up is challenging. You have little time for provisioning, testing and planning but still you need to prepare for scaling when your product reaches the tipping point. Amazon EC2 is one of the cloud providers that we experimented with while growing our infrastructure from 20 servers to 500 servers. In this paper we will go over the pros and cons of managing EC2 instances with a mix of Bind, LDAP, SimpleDB and Python scripts; how we kept a smooth working process by using NFS, auto-mount and shell-scripting; why we switched from managing our instances based on tailor-made AMI/Shell-scripting to the official Ubuntu AMI, Cloud-init and puppet; and finally, we will go over some rules we had to follow carefully to be able to handle billions of daily non-static http request across multiple Amazon EC2 regions.

Wonder how you can make your testing more efficient? Join Glenn Buckholz as he explores Docker, a technology that allows rapid development and deployment via containers. First, he explains exactly what composes a container, and discusses the differences between a container and an image. Once this is clear, Glenn demonstrates how Docker solves the problem of what he calls the state capture problem. When a test case produces a failure, the developer and testers often expend significant effort reproducing the issue so the developer can see the issue and fix it. Glenn demonstrates how Docker enables succinct, accurate, and quick communication between testers and developers, helping mitigate the state capture problem. In addition, testers can use Docker to load data, efficiently insert testing tools into a running system, set system state, and aid in test reproducibility. After you look at the inner workings of Docker and run through a few practical examples, you’ll find that Docker will hold an important place in your testing toolbox.

Developing Java based microservices ready for the world of containers The so-called experts are saying microservices and containers will change the way we build, maintain, operate, and integrate applications. This talk is intended for Java developers who wants to hear and see how you can develop Java microservices that are ready to run in containers. In this talk we will build a set of Java based Microservices that uses a mix of technologies with: - Spring Boot with Apache Camel - Apache Tomcat with Apache Camel You will see how we can build small discrete microservices with these Java technologies and build and deploy on the Kubernets/OpenShift3 container platform. We will discuss practices how to build distributed and fault tolerant microservices using technologies such as Kubernetes Services, Camel EIPs, Netflixx Hysterix, and Ribbon. We will use Zipkin service tracing across all four Java based microservices to provide a visualization of timings and help highlight latency problems in our mesh of microservices. And the self healing and fault tolerant aspects of the Kubernetes/OpenShift3 platform is also discussed and demoed when we let the chaos monkeys loose killing containers. This talk is a 50/50 mix between slides and demo.

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
