Today we will look at how to spin up an ec2 powered site in CommandBox Pro using an AWS Marketplace AMI powered with Lucee. Brad Wood and the Ortus Team have developed the ability to spin up context sites in CommandBox. What does that mean. It means that you can have as many separate independent sites as you want running with all of the bells and whistles available on AWS.
Adding new sites or domains to an OpenCms installation used to be a tedious task that required editing the OpenCms XML configuration as well as configuring the webserver to recognize the new site URL.
OpenCms 9 features the new site manager tool, which allows Administrators to create new and manage existing sites with a simple GUI based interface. This new tool will automatically update the OpenCms configuration as well as the webserver configuration, without the need to restart OpenCms.
In this workshop session, Rüdiger will start with a default OpenCms installation and use the site manager to remove the /opencms/opencms path prefix from the URL. He will then add some new sites and domains to the server configuration. He will also explain how to adopt the standard scripts shipped with the site manager for other webserver configurations.
4 years ago, mid 2013, we have identified a gap in the cloud echo-system. The landscape of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS provides solutions for VMs, Container and Networking, platforms of different types for backend developers, Backends for mobile developers and ready made software for individuals and enterprises. What is missing in the middle is the platform for web-sites and web-apps.
4 years down the line, with the emergence of Serverless, there are still no players in this gap. We will talk about what makes a platform for web-sites and web-apps. Things frontend optimized javascript, SEO, visual builder, web methods & backend javascript as well as request time container boot.
We have built Wix Code over the last 4 years targeting this exact gap – a serverless platform for website and web applications, and so …
Wix is taking the risk of predicting the future of serverless computing and where it should be 4 years from now.

Chris Kawchuck has 20 years experience in the Telecom and Service provider industry. He will be demonstrating how easy it is to spin up a Brocade vADC in AWS; enabling serverless architectures using S3 buckets, and accomplish real-time traffic rewrites to get you out of sticky situations.
Learn about:
1. Load balancing and scaling options available on AWS
2. Automating the Brocade vADC spin up using Cloudformation Templates
3. Enabling use of "Serverless" web pages in AWS 4.Taking care of tricky situations using TrafficScript
Implementing any 3rd party Load Balancer from the Amazon AWS Marketplace can be a daunting task. Not only does one have to learn the vendor's specific interface, you also need to perform quite a few administrative tasks to setup front end IPs, back end pools, clustering, and so on.
Brocade has published a CloudFormation Template (CFT) which takes all the hard work out of setting it up and operating. Using DevOps tools and open source scripts, we not only automate the deployment of the Brocade vADC within AWS, but all the configuration you need to administer, cluster, and provision your Load Balancers; including public IPs and your back-end server pools.
We would like you to try it, and take advantage of the powerful feature of the Brocade vADC.

Scaling on EC2 in a fast-paced environment (LISA'11 - Full Paper)Nicolas Brousse
Managing a server infrastructure in a fastpaced environment like a start-up is challenging. You have little time for provisioning, testing and planning but still you need to prepare for scaling when your product reaches the tipping point. Amazon EC2 is one of the cloud providers that we experimented with while growing our infrastructure from 20 servers to 500 servers. In this paper we will go over the pros and cons of managing EC2 instances with a mix of Bind, LDAP, SimpleDB and Python scripts; how we kept a smooth working process by using NFS, auto-mount and shell-scripting; why we switched from managing our instances based on tailor-made AMI/Shell-scripting to the official Ubuntu AMI, Cloud-init and puppet; and finally, we will go over some rules we had to follow carefully to be able to handle billions of daily non-static http request across multiple Amazon EC2 regions.

Wonder how you can make your testing more efficient? Join Glenn Buckholz as he explores Docker, a technology that allows rapid development and deployment via containers. First, he explains exactly what composes a container, and discusses the differences between a container and an image. Once this is clear, Glenn demonstrates how Docker solves the problem of what he calls the state capture problem. When a test case produces a failure, the developer and testers often expend significant effort reproducing the issue so the developer can see the issue and fix it. Glenn demonstrates how Docker enables succinct, accurate, and quick communication between testers and developers, helping mitigate the state capture problem. In addition, testers can use Docker to load data, efficiently insert testing tools into a running system, set system state, and aid in test reproducibility. After you look at the inner workings of Docker and run through a few practical examples, you’ll find that Docker will hold an important place in your testing toolbox.

Developing Java based microservices ready for the world of containers
The so-called experts are saying microservices and containers will change the way we build, maintain, operate, and integrate applications. This talk is intended for Java developers who wants to hear and see how you can develop Java microservices that are ready to run in containers.
In this talk we will build a set of Java based Microservices that uses a mix of technologies with:
- Spring Boot with Apache Camel
- Apache Tomcat with Apache Camel
You will see how we can build small discrete microservices with these Java technologies and build and deploy on the Kubernets/OpenShift3 container platform.
We will discuss practices how to build distributed and fault tolerant microservices using technologies such as Kubernetes Services, Camel EIPs, Netflixx Hysterix, and Ribbon.
We will use Zipkin service tracing across all four Java based microservices to provide a visualization of timings and help highlight latency problems in our mesh of microservices.
And the self healing and fault tolerant aspects of the Kubernetes/OpenShift3 platform is also discussed and demoed when we let the chaos monkeys loose killing containers.
This talk is a 50/50 mix between slides and demo.

No silly, you use CFML! ColdFusion developers have been able to write pure CLI scripts with CommandBox CLI for years now and it beats the pants of bash or Node. There's tools for creating interactive wizards, progress bar animations, colored console text output, and easy parameter handling. And the best thing is, CommandBox Task Runners are written in CFML so they can do anything CFML can do. Come learn how quick and easy Task Runners are to use so CFML can become the go-to language to use for anything.
Handling credentials, secrets and settings is a crucial aspect of any project. Developers must ensure that sensitive data is kept safe and secure from unauthorized access. However, ensuring safety shouldn't compromise local development convenience. Therefore, it's essential to adopt an approach that provides both security and ease of use.

We all want our web apps and APIs to respond quickly and scale to dizzying heights of traffic. The traditional request/response cycle of web applications gets us part way to that goal, but it certainly won't get us to being the next Amazon. Asynchronous messaging is a powerful architectural pattern that will help us avoid fundamental problems with scaling while keeping our CFML apps fast and responsive. In this session, we'll look at how systems like Amazon's Simple Queue Service (SQS) and Simple Notification Service (SNS) - along with similar systems in Azure and Google Cloud Platform - can help you build highly responsive, highly scalable CFML apps and services.
Everyone has been hearing about Machine learning and AI for a while now, but recently, it exploded.
Like you, Ortus and the CFML Community have been playing with AI too, and one of the end results is ChatGPT Box.
AI is cool, and for some people scary, but a lot of people wonder if there is really any true value for us developers, or our businesses. In this session we’ll discuss what ChatGPT Box is, why we created it, what types of problems it solves, why we are using AI to solve those problems, and how we trained and tamed our own AI.
We will also touch on some of the science behind the scenes, to help you understand the moving parts, and how ChatGPT Box v1.0.0 is just a drop in the ocean of the possibilities, we’ll touch on some ideas we have, and in the end, using ChatGPT Box can make you a much more productive Ortusian Developer!

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
