Situation
 Italy is in the south of Europe.
 Its borders are France, Switzerland, Austria and
Slovenia

north, continental sector
dominated by the Alps; a

the two is the plain of
the Po and Po; and

administrative regions:
 • North West: Liguria, Lombardy,
Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta.
 • Northeast: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-
Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige
and Veneto.
 • Central: Molise, Abruzzo, Lazio,
Marche, Tuscany and Umbria.
 • South: Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria
and Campania
 • Insular: Sardinia and Sicily.
Government:
 The president of the Republic is Giorgio Napolitano.
 The prime minister is Matteo Renzi.
 Italy have a republican system with

representative democracy.
CULTURE
 Is a mediterranean gastronomy where the main
courses are pasta, pizza and risotto.
 The official lenguage is the italian.
 Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci is the most famous,
most reproduced and most parodied portrait and
religious painting of all time.
 Michelangelo’s David is a very important piece of
sculture.
 The magnum opus of Italian Gothic is Milan
Cathedral, noted for the recharging of its decoration
and its magnitude.
 The first work considered an opera, dating
from about 1597.
 The history of Italian cinema began just a
few months after the Lumière brothers had
discovered the medium
 One of the most popular sports in the
country's football, known in Italian calcium.
Since the sixteenth century Florentine
called calcium, which involves two teams of
27 players with 22 players and 5 goalkeepers,
where the objective is to score more points
than the opposing team practice
 In the Olympic Games is the third country
with more gold medals

History
 During the Iron Age there were several cultures: the old Latium,
Magna Grecia and Etruria.
 To the XL b. C., Etruria was conquered by the Romans along with the
rest of outlying villages.
 Ancient Rome was an agricultural community founded around the
VII b.C. which expanded from the city of Rome for centuries and
grew to become an empire.
 The Roman Peace starts in the XXIX b.C. and ends in 180.
 In the middle Ages the Byzantine Empire began a series of
campaigns with the aim of reconstructing the Mediterranean unity.
Italy became a target.
 The Black Death killed one-third of the population in 1348.
 During the XIV century the Italian Renaissance emerged forming the
transition between the Middle Ages and early modern Europe.
 Because of its fragmentation, was the scene of the interests of the
European powers during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries, which led to conflicts.
 Rome was kept separate from the rest of Italy under the
command of the Pope and was not part of the kingdom
until the September 20, 1870. Then, Rome was selected as
the capital city of Italy.
 The fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini started in 1922
led the country into an alliance with Nazi Germany and the
Empire of Japan, which led to the defeat after the Second
World War.
 On June 2, 1946, a referendum about the monarchy
estabilished the republic system Italian government. The
country adopted a new constitution on January 1, 1948.
 The hegemony of the Christian Democrats ended in 1983
and in 1998 the Communists were included for the first
time in 50 years.
 In the general elections held in 2001 Silvio Berlusconi won
becoming the new prime minister.
 The poverty in Italy soared due to the economic crisis. In
2014 Enrico Letta resigned as prime minister.
