Carl von Clausewitz was a Prussian military strategist born in 1780. He served in the Prussian and Russian armies against Napoleon. He is most famous for his book "On War" published after his death, which analyzed the political and moral aspects of war. Celebrities are described as "intimate strangers" who are physically distant but psychologically close to the public due to extensive media coverage of their personal lives. They become famous for their fame alone and are "created by the media." Politicians sometimes adopt celebrity traits to seem more relatable to voters in a process called "celebrification." Maintaining a positive self-image is important for politicians to communicate effectively and influence public opinion.
The Cold War
The Cold War began after World War 2 and lasted from 1945-1991. It was characterized by tensions between NATO countries led by the US and Warsaw Pact countries led by the Soviet Union. Analyzing representations involves considering whose realities are represented and whose are denied through semiotics and other formal analysis methods.
Maqasid as shariah
Maqasid as-Shariah is very important subject in understanding the whole picture of Islamic law. Without the knowledge about maqasid as-Shariah, people will not be able to see the beautiful of Islam as it has been described in the Quran as the rahmah or mercy to the universe. Maqasid as-Shariah shows that every single law or regulations in the Islamic teaching are meant for the benefit of the whole universe since Islam was revealed to the universe. Shari'ah aims at the welfare of the people in this life and in the life hereafter, and for this purpose it has advised people to adopt such means and measures that may give advantage benefit/well-being to them and may ward off evil/injury/loss, from them.
Maqasid al-Shari'ah comprises those benefits/welfare/advantages behind the revelation of Islamic Laws.
It aims at the attainment of good, welfare, benefits, and warding off evil, injury, loss, etc. for the creatures. (All this in Arabic terminology can be stated as Masalih al-'Ibad.)

Extremism and terrorism are not new phenomena that humanity has to deal with. They have been there in the history of mankind ever since the human population started to increase on this planet. In the past, there have been despotic leaders, individuals, and groups of people who used extremism and terrorism as a means to exterminate others in order to hold onto power and exert their dominance. The researchers of this small-scale qualitative study critically analyzed what is happening to the Muslims and what needs to be done in encountering the challenges of global extremism and terrorism. The researchers took a non-partisan stand in analyzing terrorism in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack that shocked the US and the world at large. The crux of the discussion in this research was centered around on the issues as to why western media take a double standard in reporting terror attacks around the globe, why the oppressed and displaced people of the world resort to terrorism, are terrorists born or made, what lessons can be learned by countries that are faced with terror attacks and racial tensions from role-model countries that are successful in maintaining peace and harmony within their diverse population. Besides discussing the main issues, the researchers have put forward their idealism for world peace and on how the world should stand united in combatting the alarming rate of extremism and terror attacks that happen all over the world today.

Week 14: In Week 14 we will look primarily at the rise of Al-Qaeda and Islamism through sociological glasses. The first online reading briefly places Al-Qaeda within a social and cultural context. The second online reading looks at several global sociological frameworks that may have descriptive and explanatory power in our attempts to understand the place of terrorism in the world.

The "sociological imagination" allows us to link our individual lives with events in the broader world. It enables us to understand how actions a world away and/or many years in the past can result in our lives being changed forever. Moreover, it emphasizes the important idea that human beings create the world by our daily decisions and actions. There is no society without human action. (Macionis, 2002)
In many years of teaching introductory sociology to undergraduates, I have learned that most American students have a hard time with the sociological imagination. They have difficulty seeing how social trends, even in the US, affect their behaviors and, for that matter, how their behaviors affect social trends. This myopia worsens when students are challenged to look at the impact of social and historical trends at the international level. Americans tend to be very ethnocentric and isolationist. Perhaps three centuries of separation from the rest of the world by miles of water has given Americans a sense of safety and isolation. Much of this sense of safety in isolation ended on 9/11. Unfortunately, an abrupt ending to innocence often leads to irrational anger. In my classes immediately after 9/11, I found most students wanting to strike back at "those people" or "those countries" who hurt us. There was a backlash of hatred , references to all Moslems as "rag-heads" and evidence of a complete lack of understanding of historical and social factors that have led to global jihad or even that jihad has multiple meanings within Islam itself. Sociology teaches us, among other things, that we need to put ourselves in the place of the others, to put ourselves in their shoes and to see the world from their perspective without necessarily embracing that perspective. This essay attempts to clarify how Islamists and, especially, Al-Qaeda view the world.
As we have seen from our earlier discussions of systems theory, one has to begin with a focal system that is rather arbitrarily bounded in time, space, and content focus. We will be looking at Islamism, a twentieth century movement that has been likened to similar political movements of that century such as communism, socialism, and fascism We will move from this broad global systems perspective to an understanding of the rise of Al-Qaeda, its linkage to more nationally based terrorist movements, and some reflections based in systems theory.

- Different images appearing with various newspaper headlines Is this the real story? Are these actual events/issues? Who are they aimed at? Lots of questions can be posed either here or at the end, by revisiting these slides. For example: Is it really be the case that only Muslims schoolchildren attack other schoolboys? Has Christmas really been banned? There have been many assassination attempts on a Pope – why pick out Muslims? If the subject of these stories was a Christian, Jew, non-religious person etc., would their religious affiliation be mentioned at all?
- September 11 2001 is could well be before a number of your students were even born! However, that event and that date is still one of the most important turning points that led to the current issues of Islamophobia

- The Islamic teachings forbid suicide. Suicide bombers cannot claim to do what they do in the name of Islam
- 9/11 did, not surprisingly, bring terrorism to the world stage in a big way. It brought with it a large groundswell of views that terrorism, Islam and Muslims were connected. But that was not the beginning of terrorism, of course.
